January 11, 200916 yr OK - well I'm sorry I have an opinion, I just feel that it IS becoming very political, ask anyone! Your not saying you can't predict who gives who points. Ukraine gives 12 points to Russia Cyprus gives 12 points to Greece Take a look at this http://www.unrealitytv.co.uk/reality-tv/si...ave-eurovision/ http://worldhaveyoursay.wordpress.com/2008...ble-eurovision/ http://www.tvscoop.tv/2008/05/theres_a_eurovi.html Are all these and more wrong? Even Terry Wogan who has been doing it since before I was born?
January 11, 200916 yr But you must remember Cyprus and Greece have similar cultures/language and geography so I'd imagine the same artists release material in both countries and similarly with Russia and the Eastern block.
January 11, 200916 yr I'm not saying they don't but Eurovision is about different cultures and the UK has no chance! The first thing is to scrap the big 4! It will either make big 4 countries try harder, or other countries like us more as we no longer have an advantage!
January 11, 200916 yr Oh bugger. I think i have missed even knowing about this. I thought the eurovision thing would be Feb somewhen
January 11, 200916 yr Author I think to use the term political is incorrect tbh. Neighbouring countries do vote for each other, and Belarus, Ukraine and everyone will give Russia high marks regardless of what they send, but a lot of that is due to the amount of Russians living in those countries. Russia have a good 50-60 points wrapped up each year in all honesty, well, they used to. With the introduction of jury votes, this amount is likely to drop to around 25-30 points guaranteed. The main problem imo is the diaspora voting. Seeing countries like the Netherlands, Belgium and France constantly give their top two marks to Armenia and Turkey is slightly tiresome, but once again the jury vote should counter this, and those countries might only be getting five or six from the Dutch... The only real political vote in the Eurovision is the whole Greece/Cyprus/Turkey thing imo, I think the only time Cyprus ever gave points to Turkey was in 2003! And that's unlikely to change this year, but there's little that can be done about that. Also, to people who insist that "no one votes for the UK because we're at war with Iraq" or whatever other 'reason' is given, take a look at Israel. Hardly the most erm... liked of countries out there are they? Yet last year they sent a decent song, by no means the best in the contest but still good, and they got a top ten position. The fact remains that we've sent dirge since 2003 and have paid the price, it's just a coincidence that our poor run started in the same year we entered Iraq...
January 12, 200916 yr Those god awful twins better not win it for us - We will fail once again - They are awful awful singers and performers. The best of the bad bunch so far tbh is Jade.

Even Terry Wogan who has been doing it since before I was born? There's a difference between opinion and utter crap - Terry Wogan doesn't know what he's talking about! He's the one that insists we vote for Turkey every year because we 'like a bit of a bellydance', a sign of accusing the east of doing something we do just as much! Just because you can predict who gives who points does NOT mean it's political - did you even read the link I gave you? You didn't even answer my question as to whether you've even considered that the east, shock horror, MIGHT LIKE THE SAME MUSIC. Dima Bilan, Russian superstar, voted at the MTV Awards as the Biggest Russian Artist, versus Andy Abraham, flop X Factor contestant - is it any surprise we come last when we consider the contest such a joke and that countries vote for the artists they recognise and love?! Would you call it political voting if the UK gave 12 to Ireland if they sent U2?

I am so relieved finally to have a realistic post in here. Everybody in this forum seems to be either under the delusion that they are extremely hilarious, clever and observant to point out how everybody hates the UK and how it's all political and how it wouldn't matter if we sent Leona Lewis or Take That to participate, or they are of the other extreme and completely in denial about the whole thing (and no Trash I'm not just looking at you, there are others). So thank you for stripping it down to the bare bones and finally providing some sense.
January 12, 200916 yr Well we'll see in May if the UK finish last with a decent song! Secondly, no I wouldn't think it was political if the UK gave 12 points to Ireland if they sent U2 because the UK aren't ones for political voting!

Secondly, no I wouldn't think it was political if the UK gave 12 points to Ireland if they sent U2 because the UK aren't ones for political voting! WTF ARE YOU ON ABOUT?! More and MORE cultural chauvinism! Our neighbourly voting (because political voting only exists in the one case that David mentioned - seriously, nobody in their right mind VOTES on POLITICS - do you even think Putin gives a f*** about where Russia finish in the contest? Cos he sure as hell didn't in 2004 and 2005! :manson:) is just as bad as many of the nations of eastern Europe - we give votes year in, year out to Ireland, Greece, Cyprus, Turkey etc., while Portugal, Spain, Andorra and France exchange points on a regular basis. STOP the ridiculous elitism, the arrogance that our voting isn't neighbourly because 'we might vote on common taste', and actually ANSWER the questions I am posing you! WHAT proof is there that the eastern European countries aren't doing the same, and WHAT proof is there that it is AT ALL political when Israel have managed three top tens in the past ten years when they're political PARIAHS?! :manson:
