Of course I was. I was 19 when she was elected PM in 1979. The unions had far too much power before Maggie became PM. I remember TV closing down at 10pm, three day weeks and bodies and rubbish piling up in the streets. Imagine if Callaghan had been re-elected? Can you say Britain was Great in 1979, before the election?

How many more times does it have to be said that the three day week happened under Heath? There were plenty of things wrong with the Wilson/Callaghan governments. The three day week wasn't one of them.

Can you say Britain was Great in 1979, before the election?

...and can YOU say Britain was 'great' when we had a PM wilfully starving people back to work simply because they had the audacity to stand up to her? When we had a PM who recruited policemen from all over the country (at colossal expense) to bully and stir up trouble on peaceful strike marches? When we had a PM who basically outlawed homosexuality? When we had a PM who, along with her disgusting cohort Reagan, denied medical science funding vital for things like stem cell research, cancer and more importantly at the time, HIV? When the country was engulfed in riots in the early 80s? When we were dragged into a needless war solely to rescue and ailing and deeply unpopular PM? When unemployment was at an all-time high? When the country was more divided than ever before and since? When our industries were neglected or sold off.... leaving us with nothing?

Thatcher deserves to be put on trial for war crimes over the Falklands..... and I'd gladly join Grimly in street protests to deny this rancid, rotten-to-the-core woman ANY type of state funeral.

I hope she lasts, anyway, because I think the sight of her befuddled, even more insane than before with dementia and having public fits and strokes is almost as enjoyable as watching Petere Mandelson getting gunked.

I dont really think that I can add any more to that.....

Peter Mandelson getting gunked was pretty enjoyable though.... Pity it wasn't acid or toxic sludge......

tv closing down at 10... actually it was 11 or 11.30, was NOTHING to do with government.

and dont you DARE to knock working men who were putting in a full working week only for their pay packets to be diminished by rampant inflation... hence the need for strikes, until YOU put in a full working week yourself....

Look, the country had been held hostage by strikers 10 years previously, 1974 and Maggie was determined this wouldn't happen again. To quote a Digital Spy poster recently "Scargill was an odious little man" He thought he was some kind of God but met his match in Maggie didn't he?

scargill WAS an odeous little man, thatcher DID 'beat' him.... but scargills predictions , the 'black list of mines that were to close - the very reason for the miners strike' which thatcher said was untrue... has been proven right! scargill didnt lie, thatcher did!!!!!

How many more times does it have to be said that the three day week happened under Heath? There were plenty of things wrong with the Wilson/Callaghan governments. The three day week wasn't one of them.

exactly..... there was massive disruption under heath as well as callaghan, the 3 day week was heaths not labours.

craig..... whilst your assesment of 1979 is pretty accurate, the country WAS in a mess, thatcher took a sledgehammer to crack a nut. her policies at first did get britain back on track but very soon she found a lust for power and she saw herself as churchill incarnate, only with more of hitler in her!

capitalism only works amongst men of honour, who will behave themselves , who play by the rules.... in reality greed gets in the way and capitalism is abused. thatcher fed that greed, her policies/actions created so much that is bad about todays society.

But, the lie is that the unions were the only problem... They weren't, and, if you actually read Theo Nichols' book, they weren't even the major problem..... If you actually spare the time (god, what am I saying, you've got PLENTY of time on your hands.... ) to actually read the chapters available on the net, you might just learn something.

If the unions/workers had been dealt with fairly and in a similar manner to how the govts of Germany, Sweden and Holland dealt with them (ie, actually incorporating them into the process), I dont think we'd actually be in the mess we're in now with regards to industrial relations, workers are treated disgustingly in this country (not that you'd know anything about that would you?); and if we had more state control of utilities companies, there is no way in hell we'd be having rises of 17% in utility bills, look at France, Sarkozy basically stamped on EDF when they tried to raise prices rises above the rate of inflation, does any of our lot have the guts to do that...?

Absolutely... I dont even know where Chris was even getting that nonsense from..... I remember telly still shutting down round about midnight or thereabouts when I was about 7 or 8. I dont think that Breakfast Telly actually started until '82/83 or summat like that.....

What's so great about 24-hour telly anyway....? All that's really meant is more repeats.... Personally, I prefer to download or stream my telly... It kind of has the benefits of my having a bit more control over what I watch and also the fact that I dont have to put up with adverts every 10 minutes ruining the flow of a good drama or cop show.....

How can anyone, even a Thatcher hater, call the Falklands war "needless"? They invaded British territory and were refusing to leave. What else could Thatcher have done but order a task force to sail. What would you have done, let them get away with it? Do you really think she did it to improve the Tory standing in the country? If so you're more deluded than I even think you are.

The BIG issue with Sarkozy and EDF was when Sarkozy did come down very hard on EDF, and rightfully so, they had to boost their profits from somewhere so they raised our energy prices by a massive amount to keep Frances low and stay on Sarkozy's good side.

c**ts.

the falklands were invaded by US. WE colonised those islands off the argentinian coast, dont you think that argentina had more claim to them?

there was no need for so many lives to be lost.... just what has it acheived? thatcher should have been civilised and negociated sovereignty through the un, instead she saw a gung ho way to ensure she won another election by flying the flag so all the idiots who dont think for themselves would support her. it worked!

Which is my whole point really... Sarkozy stepped up to the plate for the ordinary French citizens, the gutless cock-suckers in Downing St did bugger all for US.... <_< A very STARK contrast if ever there was one..... And, what's the excuse that British Gas, N-Power and the others are using for their outrageous price rises....?

The moral of this story is surely "move to France if you dont want to be ripped off blind".....

Spot on... Let's face it, until 1982 I bet about 99.9% of the British public would've been extremely hard-pressed to point to the bloody Malvinas on a map..... I sure as hell had uttely NO SODDING CLUE as to where they were until it was pointed out to me by my teacher in primary school.... I think my response was.... "but, Miss, why are we going all the way out there if we're over here and they're closer....?".... My teacher replied "good question....".

The Falklands was nothing more than the final, rather pathetic thrashings of the British empire... What a joke... Yeah, we murdered a load of teenage conscripts... Yay us, wave that flag like a fukkin' moron, read the Scum and vote Thatcher in for a second term and let her break the backs of the working classes.....

Well actually i disagree with you here. We colonised The Falklands in the 1700s, Spain colonised Argentina in the 1500/1600s, Argentina declared independance. The Falklands didn't. Spain went to war with the UK, but does that mean that Argentina, now independant can still claim sovereignity to The Falklands? In my opinion, no. But i haven't studied it in detail, no. However, i didn't really like how Thatcher kind of used it....

but who 'owned' the falklands before we colonised them? argentina already had a populatiuon that was subdued by the invading spanish, i dont believe for one moment that the native argentinians never claimed ownership of those barren isles after all geographically they aint ours!

They had no excuse, EDF shouldn't have done it either.

Brown and Darling clearly have their heads in the sky and don't care about the average Brit.

I wonder how much in backhanders they got for not imposing a windfall tax? At least the Scum had the right idea for once with that.

Guys forget about the past and live the future...instead of sitting ur arses all days in front of a screen writting u should help the country moving foward like helping the communities and exposing urselfs to the eye of the public but in the constructive way of communication....

People that criticise dont know how to do it themselves and look for the mistakes of otherts.

Being a prime minister its hard work, the current ones arent any better!!!!!!!.I am tottaly sure she made good stuff too but to be honest all the politician or people taht speak a lot they are crap.

....... the point in understanding history is to learn (hopefully) from past mistakes so we can build a better world for the future. to ignore the past would be folly in the highest order.

Wasn't exactly the Scum who came up with that idea mate, they just jumped on a bandwagon that was already rolling....

Rob's right, you cant just forget the lessons or mistakes of history, or you're simply doomed to repeat them... Thatcher's whole "Monetarist", neo-liberal, "the markets will take care of everything" ethos came from history, it came from Adam Smith, an 18th Century philosopher whom many regard as one of the earliest economists, although, it has to be pointed out that Smith never believed in completely unfettered free trade.. So, history from 200 years previous played a crucial part in the thinking of 20th and 21st Century politicians, if you believe otherwise or you believe that history aint important to what's happening now, you're a fool.... That's just one example that kind of torpedoes your whole argument mate.....

Wasn't exactly the Scum who came up with that idea mate, they just jumped on a bandwagon that was already rolling....

True they didn't have the initial thought, but what i meant was at least they back a worth while and very needed cause for once. The tabloids do carry some weight in the uk unfortunately so when they backed it, it got noticed more by those who don't read to broadsheets.

I hope that makes some sense.
