Baltimore's Animal Collective have only made my chart on two previous occasions, with 2008s "Water Curses EP" barely making the Top 20 - it is therefore no surprise that "My Girls" has already become their biggest hit single to date by far, as it eases to a second week in pole position. Looking to end that reign fairly shortly is Brighton based singer/songwriter Natasha Khan (alias: Bat for Lashes) whose Karate Kid inspired "Daniel" inches 3-2 in it's seventh charting week, though she may become an unfortunate victim of releasing a fantastic single at the same time as one of my favourite singles of the year so far... :( Elsewhere in the Top 5, up to this week's No4 is Dan Black - the former frontman to indie band The Servant who attracted huge amounts of attention last year with his cover of Notorious BIG's "HPNTZ" which is due to be his next UK single release. The current single "Alone" inches 7-4 this week, though it may find it hard to advance any further! Also rising is the new single from the Yeah Yeah Yeahs, "Zero" a great charged up slice of techno-pop from forthcoming 3rd set It's Blitz! charges 10-5 in it's fourth charting week and could also pose a threat to "My Girls" in the coming weeks.

The chart overall is fairly quiet this week with just 5 songs making their chart debut, and in the Top 10 the story is much the same with just 2 new songs replacing Röyksopp ("Happy Up Here" down 9-13 after 8 consecutive weeks in the top tier) and Dananananaykroyd ("Black Wax" down 8-14). The first is from long established chart veterans Depeche Mode who were last in the Top 10 way back in October 2005 with "Precious" which went on to peak at No1 for a solitary week - "Wrong" the lead single from forthcoming twelfth studio album Sounds of the Universe climbs 5 places to No8. Up 1 place to No10 are White Lies with "Farewell To The Fairground" which gives the London band a fourth Top 20 hit, and a third Top 10, though so far they have on each occasion failed to go any higher than No5.

Whilst there may not be many new entries to the chart this week, Patrick Wolf's "Vulture" provides the highest debutant of 2009 so far by crashing in at No28. Previous chart form would suggest that this is heading straight for the top, but other high debutants so far this year have emphatically failed to go all the way, with only Girls Aloud debuting inside the Top 40 and climbing to number 1. The single (due out on vinyl on 20th April) is taken from The Bachelor (due 1st June) - one half of the 'Battle' project, the other of which will be entitled The Conqueror and is chalked up for a 2010 release. Next at No35 there is a chart debut for Kleerup (though he has already charted on production duties for Robyn's 2007 single "With Every Heartbeat"), and his debut UK single "Longing for Lullabies" featuring the vocals of award winning Swedish pop singer Titiyo Yambalu Felicia Jah. Completing an international theme, Icelandic singer Emiliana Torrini debuts at No39 with "Jungle Drums" - and finally at No44 and No49 there are debuts for Maccabees' "Love You Better" and Girls Aloud's "Untouchable" respectively.
