No 29- Maurice Gibb (9)- 21 weeks

Chart toppers:

• Massachusetts (1967)

• I’ve Gotta Get A Message To You (1968)

• Night Fever (1978)

• Tragedy (1979)

• Chain Reaction (1986)

• You Win Again (1987)

• How Deep Is Your Love (1996)

• Words (1996)

• Islands In The Stream (2009)

Thought the Gibb Brothers wrote all of their songs as a trio? Wasn’t so. The Bee Gees had three main periods of success which was itself unusual in the pop world, in the 60s with their initial burst, then a resurgence in tandem with the whole “Saturday Night Fever” soundtrack and finally as the band of choice for boybands in the late 90s.

No 28- Richard Stannard (9)- 22 weeks

Chart toppers:

• Wannabe (1996)

• 2 Become 1 (1996)

• Mama (1997)

• Spice Up Your Life (1997)

• Viva Forever (1998)

• Goodbye (1998)

• Keep On Movin’ (1999)

• What Took You So Long (2001)

• Let’s Dance (2001)

Stannard has pop svengali Tom Watkins for helping him up the ladder, he gave Stannard a place in his “all gay” boyband 2wo Third3 whom he managed and allowed them to support East 17 on tour. The fourth member of the band was a cartoon character called “Biffo” which was Stannard’s nickname and what he used after the group split to form Biffco, the writing company that helped The Spice Girls to become the phenomenon they did.

The longevity of the Bee Gees in the chart was very impressive. I know their Saturday Night Fever work gets the most attention but I love both of their 60s #1s and 'You Win Again' was a triumph later on too  George Michael is of course a legend also, it's a shame he wasn't around to witness the addition of 'Last Christmas' to his tally.

'Can’t Get You Out Of My Head' and 'Toxic' are two of my favourite pop songs of the 00s *.*

'Do The Bartman' in the MJ list

This is a wonderful thread, thank you. I have been keeping chart statistics since 1968 but I've never really considered writers and producers, you have made me see the light. John Lennon said he made more money writing than performing as an excuse for stopping Beatles' performances.

The other Gibb brothers are clubbed together here having written “Woman In Love” together and thereby having an extra chart topper over Maurice. British born, the brothers emigrated to Australia in the late 50s where they became (eventually) stars in the pop charts down under, but the move back to the UK in 1967 saw them top the charts here in under a year. Having written a No 1 in 5 decades could that be beaten?

• Who’s David? (2004)

• 5 Colours In Her Hair (2004)

• Obviously (2004)

• All About You (2005)

• I’ll Be OK (2005)

• Please Please (2006)

Fletcher was of course famously accepted into Busted before the decision was made to make the group a trio. Undeterred he continued to be one of the writers for the group’s hits. He co-wrote 9 chart toppers for them though only 2 of them managed more than 7 days on top.

The most successful rap act on the UK charts ever according to this measure. He’s proved he can top the charts in the Physical, the download, and the streaming era which is quite some achievement. The only one of 11penned chart toppers have lasted more than a week and that was the one he didn’t sing or appear on.

Otherwise known as Stargate, the Norwegian duo have basically written songs for a who-who’s of 21st century top. Their UK breakthrough came with S Club 7’s “S Club Party” but it was linking up with Ne-Yo and Rihanna that provided them with regular No 1’s.

Probably now the most famous member of the Black Eyed Peas and whilst he was hot he certainly was writing six chart toppers in a 2 year period and even returning Britney Spears to No 1. Of course he’s now on “The Voice” so keeps his profile high despite not being the chart force he once was.

I hadn't realised that Eminem had a writing credit on Dr. Dre's What's The Difference (I assume that's how he came to be credited on Breathe), nor that will.i.am had a credit on American Boy.

Yes that's the Eminem connection. On "American boy" it isn't only the song itself he has a hand in. The tune itself is practically a rewrite of his track "impatient" from 2007 so it's probably more will.i.am that it is Estelle.

There might be a few raised eyebrows raised at Posh Spice on the list but officially she’s credited with 11 chart toppers so here she is. The search for a solo number famously stalled making her the only member of the Spice Girls not to get there as a solo act.

Didn’t she do well! A brace of No 1 singles after leaving the Spice Girls propels her further up the list, her propensity to use the press and media stunts helped in that respect, performing between a pair of huge inflatable open legs at the BRITS and inventing a relationship with Chris Evans to assist her getting to No 1.
