Posted April 8, 201312 yr Margaret Thatcher, the first female Prime Minister of UK, has died following a stroke. I'm sure we've all got some lovely things to say about her...
April 8, 201312 yr My Tory voting parents summed up their views: 'She was good leader, did lot for country, took us out of last recession' I disagree entirely of course. My personal reaction involved the word Karma (and we'll leave it at that).

April 8, 201312 yr Oh no. My Tory worshipping form tutor will be going on about her when we go back to school. :manson: She at least could have waited two months. (sorry, I know that sounds horrible but I do have a lot of disrespect for her) Edited April 8, 201312 yr by Griefeon
April 8, 201312 yr I wouldn't wish the circumstances of her passing on my worst enemy but I will not mourn her death. That is all I have to say on the matter. Edited April 8, 201312 yr by LexDRIP
April 8, 201312 yr I'm sitting here listening to Elvis Costello. I shall use her own words to describe my feelings - Just rejoice at that news. Rejoice! Rejoice!
April 8, 201312 yr The passing of her legacy rather than the woman herself will be worth celebrating. That's not to say that I won't be having a few tonight, though.
April 8, 201312 yr I disagree with most of what she stood for but I still hold a huge amount of respect for a woman who worked her way up from a grocers in Grantham. RIP.

April 8, 201312 yr Not sorry to see the back of her but it's a shame she'll never be brought to account for her actions. I don't want to be banned from here so I'll say nothing further on the subject.
April 8, 201312 yr When I was a child (and she was PM), I just saw her as a tv character, one that wasn't too dissimilar to Penelope Keith. Therefore I guess I was quite fond of her in a way at the time.
April 8, 201312 yr Love or hate her she did a lot of good for the country, but also some not so good things. Some of the reaction I've seen to this is completely over the top ridiculous mind.
April 8, 201312 yr The reaction on both sides has been ridiculous, though obviously it's not unexpected. I can't think of anyone quite as divisive alive right now.
April 8, 201312 yr The reaction on both sides has been ridiculous, though obviously it's not unexpected. I can't think of anyone quite as divisive alive right now. But that was her wasn't it? I wasn't even alive, but I've seen people younger than me saying they're glad she's dead. Just no. She was ruthless, put Britain back on the map at the cost of a lot of people's careers. She had balls. No Prime Minster since has had any. It's just odd seeing how the reaction seriously is split right down the middle.
April 8, 201312 yr I was born a few months before she left office so obviously didn't live through much of her time as PM, but I've spent the time forming my own views on here over the years. What I hate is the people who regurgitate views from their parents/friends without really understanding WHY they are supposed to hate/love her or very much of what she did.
April 8, 201312 yr I'm sitting here listening to Elvis Costello. I shall use her own words to describe my feelings - Just rejoice at that news. Rejoice! Rejoice! I agree with a previous comment about the method of her passing, which I also wouldnt wish on a mortal enemy, and wouldnt wish to hurt the feelings of her ex-pat children. I tend towards agreeing with those not too upset by her passing though. I'll make a few statements to counter all of the "she was a virtual goddess saving the country" comments everywhere in the media (everyone here is quite sensible). Quite apart from the personal misery brought to my own family during the 80's - coalminer brother, and three generations of my family were unemployed, including me for years despite a degree.. We have Thatcher to thank for her misplaced absolute belief that rich people in power don't need an eye kept on them and changed the law to let them do as they please, essentially. Get so big that they bankrupted their company and whole nations when it became obvious too late to some how greedy and selfish they all are. Yes, banking. The other big thing was to start off the housing boom (Right To Buy is a taxpayer paid subsidy of about half the price of a house which causes those on the waiting list to be taxpayer supported by paying landlords high rents as there arent enough houses to go round, meanwhile houses became a better short-term way to save money, like monopoly, rather than something live in). Blair & Brown must of course take their share of the blame for endorsing those policies and doing nothing much to prevent it the current crisis in the UK (and of course the world as everyone else held the same Thatcherite/Reagonomics trust in the free market knowing what it was doing). Except canada. Sensible chaps. Not really very free enterprise at all, as the banks are now state owned and supported and we are in massive debt for the forseeable future... just a thought... April 9, 201312 yr I am not sorry she has passed on but do extend sympathies to her children. I have argued for years that she is the reason Britain is in such a sorry state now (as well as weak leadership from Labour in the intervening years). I really really dislike what she did to this country.
