So the 20th Commonwealth Games is being held in Glasgow, Scotland and will commence with the Opening Ceremony on the 23rd July - less than 2 weeks away! Scotland have previously hosted the Games twice, in 1970 and 1986 - both times in Edinburgh. It's the closest event we have to the Olympic Games without actually being the Olympics and I'm very excited for it to begin! The 2010 thread for this managed a grand total of 4 replies so let's try and do better this time! |

Sad to see Katarina Johnson-Thompson having to pull out through injury but it's still going to be an exciting games, the opening ceremony starts tonight and as far as I'm aware it will be featuring the fabulous Amy Macdonald!

No sign of Emeli Sande yet. Is she OK?

Think I just spotted Silas in the crowd holding a "Fife council are a bunch of c*nts" banner.

So Betsy talks about Commonwealth values. Does that include the fact that homosexual acts are illegal in most Commonwealth countries?

I went to the rehearsal for the opening ceremony the other day, and man those first few minutes were some cheesy shit.

I agree with Harve that the first part of the Ceremony did seem like quite a mess and a bit too cheesy, but from Amy Macdonald and Rod Stewart onwards I really enjoyed it!
Great to see England winning the first medals of the Games in the triathlon with Jodie Stimpson and Vicky Holland getting gold and bronze respectively! |

Surprised Emeli Sande never performed tbh!
The opening ceremony really wasn't that very good. |

I think they realised having Emeli would make it too similar to the Olympics, I would've loved to see Amy Macdonald perform 'Pride' though as it is absolutely perfect for the occasion.

I went to the rehearsal for the opening ceremony the other day, and man those first few minutes were some cheesy shit. It was all pretty underwhelming and generally rubbish. Someone on DS made a great analogy, saying it was like Aldi compared to the Olympics opening ceremony being Waitrose!! May watch a bit of swimming and of course the ladies gymnastics. I see Mo Farah has pulled out due to failing to recover from a recent illness.
Well done to the Brownlee brothers on their 1-2 in the men's triathlon and to Jodie Stimpson for winning gold in the woman's triathlon. |

Judo continues to baffle and fascinate me. It's passionate but restrained and that feels quite weird.
Swimming last night was pretty excellent, I don't see competitive swimming enough and it is really fun to watch. |
