I'm sure in the minority, being a Corrs loon, but I do prefer their version of Dreams to Fleetwood Mac's.

Also being a rubbish gay, I find Erasure's cover of Take A Chance On Me more enjoyable than Abba's. And whilst I do have an appreciation for the original, I'm also more inclined to take Annie Lennox's A Whiter Shade Of Pale over Procol Harum :(

Echoing other people's suggestions; Joe Cocker and Sinead O'Connor most definitely.

I wouldn't go AS far as to say Placebo's Running Up That Hill is better than Kate Bush's, but I could happily put them on a par.

Johnny Cash - Hurt

One of the greatest records of all time let alone greatest covers.

This one I 1000% agree with.

Some of my other favourites are:

Mary J. Blige 'One' [feat. U2] (U2)

Britney Spears 'My Prerogative' (Bobby Brown)

Fugees 'Killing Me Softly' (Roberta Flack)

Mark Ronson & Amy Winehous 'Valerie' (The Zutons)

No Doubt 'It's My Life' (Talk Talk)

EDIT: Oh, and Jeff Buckley 'Hallelujah' (Leonard Cohen)

Agreed!

Definetly agree with Leona's version of 'Run', it gives me shivers. So emotional and it was released at the time of my grandad's death so it will always hold some sentimental value. I think it's the best thing she's done too, I now prefer it to 'Bleeding Love' even.

Scissors Sisters - Comfortably Numb

Without a doubt!

But I have never really got into Pink Floyd anyway

Nancy Sinatra's version of Morrissey's Let Me Kiss You is a bit better.

Pet Shop Boys - Go West. Also love their mash-up Where the Streets Have No Name/Can't Take My Eyes Off of You but don't know if that classifies as a cover

Emmylou Harris - Goodbye (first recorded by Steve Earle)

t.A.T.u - How Soon Is Now is brilliant but so is the original.

Thats a cover

I did not know that.

Gabriella Cilmi [Echo Beach] and [Warm This Winter]

i know these threads pop up quite regularly, but they are good info, i see theres several tracks being mentioned where others had no idea it was a cover.
EDIT: Oh, and Jeff Buckley 'Hallelujah' (Leonard Cohen)

Totally forgot about this. Ha, that's one.

I forgot about one...

Midway State feat. Lady GaGa 'Don't Give Up': (Kate Bush & Peter Gabriel)

I don't know if you guys would class it as good as the original, but I really, really like it. I think it sure as hell the closest you're going to get to beating the original, with this song at least.

I definitely agree with that, but probably for the same reason as you

Still it can't be all down to blind looning because I thought that their cover of The Winner Takes It All was completely average, lacked all of the emotion of the original and the production was dull as dishwater.

So Mr Tamborine Man doesn't count as a 60s cover, eh? ;)

I would also include All Along the Watchtower by Hendrix (another Dylan cover)

Maybe we should have a separate thread for Dylan songs where his version was better than the best known cover

I think I must be the odd one who (apart from one song) likes only Dylan singing Dylan songs. The one exception is this:

Norma

Oh I'm with you there, my Corrs looning stops there. I actually wouldn't hesitate to name the The Winner Takes It All to be one of the WORST covers I've ever heard. I'm still embarrassed for them that they agreed to it. Did any of them even do anything other than Andrea? The rest was pretty much a computerised karaoke backing track surely?

I'd also say that though it's pretty good, their version of Everybody Hurts didn't touch REM's original.

tb fair we have covered (lol) this topic several tims.. so i deliberately didnt include many 60's myself and several 70's (denis, i fought the law etc)

If they did I didn't hear it. It definitely sounded like an Andrea solo track. I was gutted that they lowered themselves to ABBA Mania, there was no need, it's not like they needed any extra exposure back in 1999!...they didn't really fit with Steps, Cleopatra and Tina Cousins

I shamefully own that 'ABBA Mania' on CD! HAHA. One of the first ever albums I recieved  I was absoloutely, madly in love with Steps' version of 'Lay All Your Love On Me'. Didn't like any of the other covers much though

Meatloaf - "It's all coming back to me now" (More passion than Celine's and better than Pandora's Box (The video is like a sado-porn)

Meatloaf - "Out in the dark" (More convicing than Barbara Streisand's)

Don Mclean - "Crying" (Again more passion)

Erasure - "Take a Chance On Me"

E-Rotic - "Winner takes it all"

Dollar - "Oh L'Amour" (I am probably going to be killed for this, but this has more charm to it)
