Why is it always MLWSWY that is considered the "flop" #1 of last year? Surely if any of them flopped it would have been 'Holiday' which went to #1 then plummeted out of the top 100 after about 16 weeks, or 'Boys and Girls' which fell from #1 to #6 in one week?

I think it's because both those examples you gave were second singles, their first singles did better. 'once' and 'my life would suck without you' are lead singles.

01-04-06-07-10-14-17-20-29-33-33-36-48-53-65-69-79

73-01-06-07-08-13-18-24-32-46-49-52-55-68-69-81-71-50-81-72-74-85-95-90

01-04-06-08-09-13-22-31-38-47-53-69-92-86-93

MLWSWY, then BAG, then Holiday.

I suppose it's fair to label Holiday as far more floppy a #1 than MLWSWY, but in terms of holding up (and not actually having a run made almost exclusively of drops) BAG > MLWSWY.

The *real* flop #1 of the year was, of course, Islands In The Stream:

01-03-23-51-81

 But that was charity and still sold fairly well for a song with so few weeks top 100, so I suppose it shouldn't be considered in the same vein as the 3 above.

Similarly, Rage Against The Machine's second run:

80-01-02-40-100

But again, can't really be compared as it was a Facebook campaign.

EDIT:

Nope, THIS is the biggest flop #1 of the year, pretty conclusively:

01-02-03-05-08-12-19-24-31-40-52-61-68-92

Never Leave You of course.

or 'Islands In The Stream' which spend a massive three weeks in the top 40. Yes it was for Comic Relief but that's still incredibly bad in the download age.

EDIT: Just saw Bray's post. :D

Mama Do wasn't that much bigger:

20/06/2009 Pixie Lott Mama Do (Uh Oh, Uh Oh) 1 {1}-2-7-9-16-22-25-27-36-41-47-37-40-46-45-53-64-74->18

12/09/2009 Pixie Lott Boys And Girls 1 73-{1}-6-7-8-13-18-24-32-46-49-52-55-68-69-71R(2)-50-72R(2)-74->19

In fact comparing them to other #1s this year, she was actually lucky to reach the top both times.

Never Leave You of course.

Yeah, Never Leave You did leave the charts very quickly actually, although 1-2-3-5 isn't really that back.

Never Leave You is an amazing song though! I still listen to it loads.

And to be fair, Pixie Lott had really easy weeks for her #1s. I believe they both sold less than 60,000 in the week. Never Leave You was up against I Gotta Feeling.

Edited by Eric_Blob

Another floppy #1 spending the same (14) number of weeks in the top 100 as Never Leave You, although one more week in the top 10, was Run This Town:

01-03-04-05-06-10-17-28-40-47-57-74-92-96

If they sold very well or held up quite well, no no.1 is considered a flop no.1.

Of course, you can say it was the no.1 that fell the most, but flop? No, not really.

Some singles fall fast because of huge sales the first few weeks.

Glad to see Candy in the top 5 as well, amazing song. Go Aggro!

Wow, Pendulum doing great, if they could rise to number 1 before friday, they have a chance of number 1, but that probably wont happen, so they should be comfortably top 3 by friday

I wouldnt say MLWSWY was the flop number 1, as Bray said, the flop number 1 based by number of weeks would probably be Never Leave You or Run This Town although Pixie Lott surely would be up there too- Her songs fell very quickly and neither made the YE top 40, plus quite low sales, I believe she only narrowly beat David Guetta to number 1 that week, and that had already been there

Surely it's not about the chart runs though, to determine what flopped and what didn't? It's the sales isn't it? I just meant 'Once' seems to be having a very similar run to MLWSWY. Both have gone 1-4-6 (So far - in the mids for Diana...)

Well, it needs longevity for it to be remembered really.

While #1s with mega chart runs like Sex On Fire, Poker Face, Just Dance or I Gotta Feeling and maybe even a couple of less mega runs like Number 1 will probably still be remembered in 10 years, songs like Never Leave You or Boys And Girls with relatively short runs most likely won't.

Aggro & Kimberly are gaining on Plan B quickly, and Pendulum are still gaining on Usher quickly - not sure which is moving faster, I think it's Aggro because it still has the boosting effect of that performance, but nonetheless, would not say it's impossible Candy could overtake Watercolour again.

Salt In the Wounds has climbed another place to #42, while Watercolour's Radio Edit is still moving up, now at #74.

That says it all really

a long chart run usually equals good sales, so songs with long runs are usually good- even songs that dont make number 1 or come anywhere close to it with long runs usually have longevity, Elbows 'One Day Like This' made 35 yet has spent 20 weeks in the top 75, and of course, Chasing Cars

you just have to look lower down the itunes top 1000 to see songs from 5-10 years ago still there still selling proves their longevity

Yeah. I always seem to see some weird songs down there. Pump It by the Black Eyed Peas seems to always be in the top 500. I don't really know why though. Perhaps people hear that Dick Dale song in movies all the time, and they buy the Black Eyed Peas version. I don't know really...

I know, there are some that are down there that probably dont have longevity and are there for a certain Reason eg. Gnarls Barkley- Run, used in an advert

Odd was my post deleted. :o
