Posted August 15, 201014 yr It seems the majority of number ones have been urban music in the past couple of years. Traditional pop and dance stations seem to be ditching the genre they represent for urban music as well. What can be done to stop this? My views are: A) Have two seperate charts - International and local acts. With this system there would be two number ones and The Saturdays would be #1 in a local chart for this week. B) Disqualify long running songs - If a song has achieved 20 weeks at the top 40 it is therefore disqualified. C) Promotion of other genres - MAKE radio and TV have shows for those who are into folk, rock etc. D) Abandon the singles chart - It's a joke now and it seems the album chart has more prestige. E) Re-educate the young - Explain to the youth that there are other styles and perhaps promote the negative of urban music e.g. mysgonist lyrics in rap, greed as this is a recession and mentioning greed should be seen as wrong. See positives in other genres. What do you think should be done?
August 15, 201014 yr what a stupid thread- just accept that urban music is popular, its not hard :manson:
August 15, 201014 yr Pointless ^^ the fact is this is life and all people care about in that industry is money and whats popular and will sell
August 15, 201014 yr this is laughable. Why would you want to stop it? It's only a faze anyway and it's not like it's urban in it's purest form anyway.

That would encourage more urban entries I think, it's moreso the *other* genre songs that tend to be the long runners anyway, over urban, usually C. This I agree with, it would be nice to have a balance. People buy what they hear so if singles from other genres were promoted as much as urban music is, it would help to readdress the balance. D. Album sales are tragic at the moment and artists can get top 5's purely from a loyal fanbase, just like the singles chart was in 2005 at the depths of despair - requiring 30k to get to #1. If anything the singles chart is far more relevant right now. The only thing that *could* be done, to stop it dominating quite so much is point C. That said, I like 90% of urban music that gets into the charts so it doesn't bother me at all. I do however wish there was more space for other genres to shine through sometimes, but people won't buy what they don't know exists, and radio and TV stations dictate the charts basically (and X Factor primarily in the final quarter, which is when urban music tends to take a backseat chartwise).
August 15, 201014 yr Somebody really needs to get rid of that glasses emoticon :( How can we make lettered lists without looking silly when it comes to 'B' :drama:  edited my comment with a dot but it's not quite right somehow
August 15, 201014 yr I saw this thread title and first thought 'Hang on, I don't remember writing that'... :P
August 15, 201014 yr It doesnt need to be stopped, it will fade out in time eventually by it's own merit when the public move on to another genre to dominate a little more than the others. I dont quite see what the fuss is anyway, the majority of the urabn music that's been charting has actually been fairly decent in my opinion.
August 15, 201014 yr If we stopped urban domination then we would just have domination of another genre thus you have the same problem.
August 15, 201014 yr I wonder if this thread would exist if anyone but the Saturdays missed out on no.1 this week. I'm not into Urban music but I wouldn't want to 'stop' it.
August 15, 201014 yr The only way the urban domination will fade is if the age group of the charts increased somehow. I think the chart is too youth-dominated and urban music is just very popular with teenagers. And I'm not as convinced as others it will fade so easily. It's been very high selling for a long time now (though it did dip perhaps a little a few years ago, but back in 2004/2005 it was also very popular) to the point that I would say it's more than just a fad. I do think this dance/urban style will probably go out of fashion soon though, yes, but I think urban in general will remain a high-selling genre for the forseeable future. Some of your points are really ridiculous though. As gooddelta said, the only one that is perhaps a good idea is C, but that wouldn't work because young people simply won't watch it. There's already Later with Jools Holland for example which has an alternative mix of artists but it makes no difference to the singles chart because it attracts a more adult-orientated audience. Of course a show like Top of the Pops that has a variety of genres would be good though. Edited August 15, 201014 yr by superbossanova
August 15, 201014 yr Seriously why do people care what songs dominate the charts. You are not forced to listen to this music and if these urban tracks are selling so well they are stopping the music industry from collapsing.
August 15, 201014 yr Author I think we do need a new Top of The Pops show, but whats stopping people from doing this? OK, we are in a recession but it ran during the mid 70s, 80s and early 90s ones. There is barely anything on the TV anyway aside from dull soaps so why don't they just do it? One thing, DO NOT hire Fearne and Reggie.
August 15, 201014 yr Urban music is a pain, though if thats what young people like, then thats what they like. I have to say though that tv and radio could do with promoting other genres more. Though thats where radio 1 is sopposed to come in, as they are not a commercial station, and dont have to rely on advertising.
August 15, 201014 yr I'm not keen on the urban era neither but music has always evolved through different eras including indie, dance, 80s etc. It will at some point change I'm sure..
