Personal opinion of course but Word Up wasn't cheap sounding or cheap to have organised, what with it being a Timbaland production. He had produced for Aaliyah, Missy Elliott, Genuwine, Destiny's Child and Jay-Z in advance of working with Mel B!! Considering it awful is another matter of course, but for the time the production was current, and unlikely to have come cheap.

I also don't think cheap can be levelled at most of Hot tbh. It's a well produced album! It's just that a lot of the songs are a bit meh regardless.

Loved seeing Mel's Padam Padam instagram story btw *.*

It's Mel B's 50th birthday today! Happiest of birthdays to her 🥰

Not to mention the fact that Virgin spent a fortune producing TWO expensive music videos for Word Up. She clearly had the required budget to succeed. They believed in her potential.

If only it had worked out, it deserved more than #13 (well, #14 is what was revealed at the time)! I feel like the production/first video was maybe a bit too mature for the young fanbase, perhaps. If the second video had been *the* video all along, then maybe it would have got better airplay?

I think Melanie's Goin' Down video suffered the same problem.

Wasn't it banned / restricted to late hours by some music television stations due to its "violent content" and "offensive language"?

Feels So Good should've easily been her first single - it sounds like a proper "big pop star" song from around that time. I could see why people would dislike Tell Me though; it is sort of tacky to sing blatantly about your ex like that (even if they're a no-good hustler). I like both songs though, but it does feel like a screw up not to just go for Feels So Good and Hotter as the one-two punch.

I agree with this! Tell me is a catchy track but was such a misfire with the whole bitter ex vibe to it.

Regarding Word Up , which had amazing production and two amazing videos. It deserved better.

Looking at the chart when released , a very tough week, i wonder if it would have reached the top 10 if released at a different time?

Regarding Tell Me as lead single, it did well, and was used for the publicity, so it did make sense.

Hotter should have been a single.

My order

1. Feels So Good

2. Hotter

3. Tell Me

4. Lullaby

Regarding the album it has 5 good tacks the rest = skip !!

Was it restricted in the UK?... jesus the country has always been so prude/conservative... what exactly was violent about the video, Melanie's hair style? moronic people

Mel B's Word Up also suffered from lack of promo, and not the least cos the few times she performed, she did sat down on a couch

like, what is this hunny?

Do we know why she sat for all of the Word Up performances? Was it ever said anywhere? lmao

^ she was pregnant

Her daughter was born in February 1999; these performances were in June 1999.

I think Mel C posted it from one of her DJ sets?

Perhaps it was in one of her stories, but here is a clip someone in the audience has posted.

Word Up is a great song! She needed to do more promo for it, and rrlease in a quieter week. I don't think it's a no.1, but an easy top 5 with promo and a good relesse schedule

How, exactly, is singing about a lived experience a misfire?

The song itself is fine, but releasing it as the first single when she was already being typecast as a "bitch" in the media was a huge misfire. She did nothing to wipe out that image.
