An excellent piece of music and very haunting (Chi Mai, not Making Your Mind Up!).

Remember it very well - from a master composer of film music of course, and think it had been used before in a couple of films. The TV series was huge at the time - Wednesday's on BBC2.

The Big Brother theme by Element Four got to number 4 in 2000

edit: oops already listed :P

dont think this has been mentioned- Bob The Builder- Can We Fix It was number 1 in 2000 and was the best selling song of the year- the only one to reach over a million

Julee Cruise - Falling (Twin Peaks tv series) got to #7 in 1990.

Light Flight by Pentangle - a hit from the 1970's TV series Take Three Girls (which I believe featured Joanna Lumley). Scratch that ... it was Liza Goddard ... another posh girl!

'Release Me' by Engelbert Humperdinck got to #1, and then a few decades later was used as the theme to The Fast Show. (Amazing sketch show from the 90s)

I suppose that doesn't count but I felt like plugging The Fast Show :P

The theme song from Frasier should have been released -_-

"I'll Be There For You" is a lovely song and a brilliant theme tune to a great show. Dearly missed :(

Also did they ever release the Neighbours theme (note to viewers of Neighbours under 15 ... yes it did have a proper theme once upon a time!).

They did indeed! It peaked at no 83!

Phantom Planet - California (The OC)

Gavin DeGraw - I Don't Wanna Be (One Tree Hill)

both hits in 2005

Has anyone mentioned this?

Green Day - The Simpsons Theme

#19 in 2007 (charted higher than their 'big comeback' Know Your Enemy, #21 last year )

Technically a cover of a theme song but still.

Lazytown made like #4 a few years ago I think! :D

I loved Paula Cole's song from DC!

I dunno if the Eastenders one counts but Anita Dobson sang 'Anyone Can Fall In Love'. Made #4 in 1986 and she played Dirty Den's missus.

Has anyone mentioned this?

Well if you're going to have covers you can count The BC-52's Meet The Flintstones too, of course...

Jackie Lee - Rupert

Mike Post - Hill Street Blues

The Wombles - Wombling Song

I think the Postman Pat theme tune charted in the early 1980's!?!

And let's not forget the cheap techno re-working of the Rainbow theme tune that reached #15 in 2002... 'with a ROD, JANE, FREDDY, READY!'

Paul Hardcastle - The Wizzard

Another of the Top Of The Pops theme tunes from the mid-late 80s.

Other reworkings of TV theme tunes:

Shaft - Roobarb & Custard

Urban Hype - A Trip To Trumpton

Smart E's - Sesame's Treet

Dorothy - What's That Tune

Oxide & Neutrino - Bound 4 Da Reload (Casualty)

Another song that I believe was a TV theme at around about the time it charted:

S Club 7 - Bring It All Back
