It's really hard to see what could be #1 next week. Nothing really screams out. I guess if Black Eyed Peas don't do it then the other option is Willow Smith o_o Unless Nicole or Ellie manage to climb up, which seems unlikely to me, or Coldplay take off in a big way :o

I don't see the Black Eyed Peas song particularly appealing much to the people who watch X Factor (or at least ones who don't have it already). Mind you, it only needs a small % of the audience to download it and it'll be #1, so the odds of it finding that small % are pretty high :( Boo.

its the same situation to last year when nothing comes out around this time as people await the xfactor single and hold off until the new year.remember when lady gaga hit no1 again with bad romance!!

I only read about the Coldplay single the day before, but having listened to it - and indeed bought it, it's a slam dunk instant Christmas classic, if it doesn't chart well this week - and it may yet - then I wouldn't be in the least bit amazed to see it really build up a head of steam in the next couple of weeks - it's ages since we had a new really A class Xmas song from anyone - and this is definitely a keeper.

i agree but it doesnt matter how many people think the new coldplay song is brillant it will never be xmas no1 because of the xfacotr unless a facebook campaign starts and is picked up by the red top tabloids on xmas week like rage last year!!

"it will never be xmas #1" followed by "unless"...so never say never.

Thought I'd come in and check the iTunes chart in here, seeing as I can't get my feed to work and now I think I'll leave for another month or five. The last three pages have reminded me why I steer clear of iLoons - the bitching, the sniping, the 'my taste is superior to yours' complex that so many people seem to have.

I'm not a fan of Coldplay either personally but I appreciate that they are skilled songwriters who have released some classic singles. I wouldn't listen to them out of choice though - but it is nice to have original xmas songs about and in the charts. I still maintain that more artists should do them. Acts like Wizzard and Slade would have been just another distant memory of the 70's if not for their xmas timeless songs. We need some new 'xmas classics' and I'd love Take That, or some other current pop bands have a stab at making one.

i agree, although gary barlow wrote geraldines 'once upon a christmas song' in 2008!!

also i agree with youre views on slade and wizzard - if you get it right making a christmas song...that song will outlive you!!!!

Well it's from an episode from the second series which is only going to be aired in around March next year if I'm right! If they do a medley of the songs on this week's X Factor it should help.

Ok bad example :P How about Shakin' Stevens. He's a cult icon amongst 18-30's, and almost wholly down to Merry Christmas Everyone and THAT jumper! Sure, he was huge in the 80's but I doubt he'd be massively well remembered now without that song - certainly not with younger people. And look at East 17 - the only song of their's that ever gets airplay anymore is Stay Another Day and normally only in December. If acts write a decent xmas song, they can keep the royalties rolling in for years - seems like common sense to me!

shakin stevens is another poorish example - shakin stevens was the biggest selling singles artist of the 80s!! :o

why doesnt radio play the songs like any other act then?? oh thats right theyre songs are pointless covers!!

That's if they air it, I haven't been able to watch the series yet so I'm not sure if the Christmas episode is an episode that goes away from the plots of the show, since if it is, it would be ideal to have it aired on Christmas Eve/Day.

Nooo..its because they are not released to radio? Why would they be, its a TV show.

Coldplay is 8 in the US too in less than a day... the only act after 3-5 yeas to release a C song and do such brilliantly. In love :)

3. Who's That Chick? (feat. Rihanna) - David Guetta & Rihanna

6. Christmas Lights - Coldplay

I had a feeling Christmas Lights could do fairly well in the USA as well, but I'm surprised it's doing pretty much as well as it's doing here :o

EDIT:

 6. Christmas Lights - Coldplay

I think I'll do another full Xmas update soon.

I expect you'd struggle to find many people under the age of 25 who could name more than 3 Shakin' Stevens, Wizzard or Slade singles, no matter how popular they were at the time! I wonder if in 30/40 years time people will vividly recall all (or indeed any) of the 14 Westlife #1's!

The point I was trying to make is that their xmas classics keep these acts relevant to younger audiences, who in turn will be the older audiences of the future, and carry on taking these songs into the future with them. It's a great way to ensure that your memory lives on as an artist!

Does Kylie usually get into the itunes top 100 with SB?

I hope Let It Snow does well.

The Waitresses need to get higher, SOON!

I can't even name one other single by Shakin' Stevens or Wizzard.

I think the thing is that a lot of artists DON'T want to be remembered for a Christmas song. I mean, they're great, but they're blatant novelty really. Most artists would prefer their memories lived on with more serious songs than that - especially in the rock and hip hop genres where they take themselves a bit more seriously than pop artists! Although I don't know why The Saturdays don't do a Christmas song, I think they could get the #1 they so desperately crave with it.

P.S. I can name more than 3 Wizzard, Slade or Shakin' Stevens records and I'm only 19!

With the possible exception of All Saints artists/bands with 5 #1 singles tend not to be forgotten about.

All Saints, forgotten about?! Nope, those of us that weren't in nappies at their peak still remember them as one of the best British girlgroups. They were, to the Spice Girls, what the (early) Sugababes were to Girls Aloud. The cool, more edgy, option with more focus on the vocals. I still believe you'd be hard pushed to find a record by a girlgroup of higher quality than "Never Ever".

This iTunes chart is so dis-organised and out of place! (Top 40) Album tracks, (What's My Name, Game Over, Girls, Lose My Mind, More) reality tv related songs, (Heroes, Make You Feel My Love, Gillian McKeith) Xmas songs, (All I Want For Christmas Is You, Fairytale Of New York, Christmas Lights, Boots),fake songs (Turn My Swag On) and multiple versions of songs (Thinking Of Me, Your Song).

Leaving us with only 25 normal songs!

All very true and it can also keep artists in pretty decent money if they release a song that sells tens of thousands of copies every year in the run up to Christmas. Not bad for some artists who havent released anything for decades!
