December 29, 201014 yr I would guess that if it is a supermarket chain that has ballsed up, that it would affect very few singles dramatically. Apart from Matt Cardle/X Factor/Other high physical sellers I reckon that the rest of the market will not have been affected by even as much as 1%, seeing as 99% of singles are downloads, and last week especially would have been even more than that.
December 29, 201014 yr wow, no wonder last weeks sales were so incredible  this could definitely have some affect on the YE number 1
December 29, 201014 yr According to M!key the OCC iPhone/iPad application has updated and there are a few more minor changes in the 76-100 section of the singles chart: Eminem up 1 to #89 Kylie Minogue down 1 to #90 Kings Of Leon up 1 to #92 (:D) Robbie Williams down 1 to #93 Journey up 1 to #94 Lady GaGa down 1 to #95 This makes it seem even more likely that it's a supermarket balls-up. It's a bit strange Bad Romance is still being stocked but it wouldn't need a huge amount of extra sales to be at 94 instead of 95 so it could have happened. Kylie and Robbie are the sort of artists you'd expect to have singles of theirs stocked in supermarkets. Shame about the news re: Loud possibly not even selling 250k this week. It'll be interesting to see what the revised Matt Cardle and Take That figures are.
December 29, 201014 yr forgive me for being thick, but how could a super market ever report sales MORE than what they scanned? i could imagine an error under reporting sales, where say a barcode ect was wrong, but how can you do it the other way round. you cant count a sale unless it has been scanned through the system surely?
December 29, 201014 yr Matt has just tweeted "nearly 700k singles sold". The total sales on Sunday which we have are 739k - surely there couldn`t be so much of a cock-up could there ?

It's something to do with an old weighting system they don't use any more that was used for some reason last week.

Ask Rihanna about her album sales... If Matt's sales have been downgraded by >40k, then Em/Ri are almost certainly safe for YTD #1. Edited December 29, 201014 yr by vidcapper
December 29, 201014 yr It's something to do with an old weighting system they don't use any more that was used for some reason last week. Why would Tesco (assuming it's them :P ) change this system when I assume prior to last week, they used the "sales over the counter" system.
December 29, 201014 yr Supermarkets don't sell singles. So the only physical single affected by this would have been Matt Cardle and the X Factor Finalists. Those are the only singles that get sold in Supermarkets anymore. Supermarkets in theory shouldn't cause errors as they can accurately say how many units they have sold on each day thanks to POS systems. There really should be no errors in calculating the chart as it's mostly POS data from big companies.
December 29, 201014 yr I think what is being suggested is that the OCC estimated sales for a retailer at least one day even though returns had been submitted. If a retailer doesn't submit a return for a day, the sales can be estimated based on sales for the rest of the week and knowledge of the general sales pattern. So, for example, assume that the OCC thought that Wednesday's sales had not been submitted by a supermarket chain. They will have been able to use the other data to estimate Wednesday's sales which would then be added to the total. However, in this case, it seems that sales had been submitted for each day. Therefore, the total figure would have included the actual figure for Wednesday's sales and the estimated figure.

December 29, 201014 yr Huge drops for Take That and Rihanna, their sales did seem ridiculously high and those certainly sound more realistic, considering we lost Saturday trade anyway!
December 29, 201014 yr Interesting! I would like to see revised sales figures. Masterton says that Take That's The Circus swaps places with GaGa (40 & 39 respectively) ... but its the Ultimate Collection not The Circus that was at 40. I'd still like to know how much out the sales are at the very top. I knew Progress was selling well but 430K was a bit unbelievable for last week. Kath
December 29, 201014 yr the same probably happened to nadine when insiatable was released. there was probably a glitch in tescos systems haha . she wishes lol
December 29, 201014 yr Does anybody know, or can estimate, how much Matt sold last week? He must've sold less than 261,000 to still be under 700,000 altogether, if I calculate correctly. Edited December 29, 201014 yr by Eric_Blob
