January 9, 201115 yr Sooo pleased for Rihanna!!! When was the last time an album track with not even a 'single version' available to download made no. 1? Has it ever been done apart from Leona's 'Run'? Airplanes ?
January 9, 201115 yr I agree that Only Girl is better than What's My Name?, but I love both. And it's worrying that an RnB song, like What's My Name? is more dance-able to than some of the dance songs we've had in the charts!
January 9, 201115 yr What's My Name>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>Only Girl Only Girl has gotten so boring to a point I just can't listen to it anymore :( although Umbrelle $h!ts over both of them imo
January 9, 201115 yr Airplanes ? Yeah, Airplanes definitely did it. A single version was released, eventually, but Airplanes got popular a lot earlier than expected, and got to #1 like a month before the release date! :o
January 9, 201115 yr Really old-skool climb to #1 there - it's never fallen during it's run yet only reaches the top on its 7th week in the top ten!
January 9, 201115 yr I actually enjoy "What's My Name" over "Only Girl", but I'm a fan of both songs & the album. Congrats Rihanna!
January 9, 201115 yr So that's a number one in '07, '08, '09, '10 & '11, quite an impressive record for Rihanna! Someone on the facebook Official Charts group page said earlier that Rihanna would be the first female soloist* to make UK #1 in five consecutive years, which she has now done, so is that true? Madonna missed a run of six years by not making #1 in 1988, so her longest run is four years. Kylie has managed three consecutive. Sandie Shaw did three years out of four, but missed 1966. Anyone else? *Rihanna's collaborations stretch the definition of 'soloist', admittedly, but they still count.

I think the record may also have something to do with her managing just one in each year as well? (This will change if she makes #1 with something else this year).
January 9, 201115 yr (15) Nero-Me And You Good tune from them, I hope they have more hits in their careet
January 9, 201115 yr I think the record may also have something to do with her managing just one in each year as well? (This will change if she makes #1 with something else this year). Well, it's true that Rihanna has scored 'only' one #1 each year, but I don't think any other woman has done it, even with more than one #1 in any of the years, so that may be a distraction from an impressive achievement. I await someone proving this to be wrong though...
January 9, 201115 yr No, you're correct. We discussed this in the previous iTunes thread actually, and got into a discussion about whether Run This Town is actually a #1 for Rihanna or not. Rihanna is, indeed the first female solo artist, ever, to get #1 in 5 consecutive years. Elvis Presley is the only other solo artist to get #1 in 5 consecutive years, apparently. The place I read this at kept stressing "solo" artist, which suggests that some groups/bands have done better than this. Edited January 9, 201115 yr by Eric_Blob
January 9, 201115 yr Only Girl and Whats My Name are a thousand times better then umbrella imo. Only Girl is an anthem and never gets old for me, but What's My Name is so addictive and catchy, both great for different reasons, and both huge huge hits. :) Glad to see Loud #1 album too. And Invincible up 3 to #12 and Who's That Chick up 3 back to top 10 at #10. :D Huge climb for Jessie J :o Up 13 places to top 5 at #5! Will climb to #2 next week too. Disapointing peak for Cheryl Cole's 'The Flood', #18. Edited January 9, 201115 yr by Karma
January 9, 201115 yr Other acts that have managed 5 or more years with a number one in each year Westlife 1999-2003 5 years (Missed out on 8 years due to the solitary hit in 2004 only reaching #3 ) Abba 1974-1978 5 years The Beatles 1963-1969 7 years Elvis 1957 - 1963 7 years. Anyone think of any more? Edited January 9, 201115 yr by Olympus

The problem with including featured credits though is that this thing of randomly popping up on other's singles is a fairly recent trend. Kylie and Madonna didn't do that when they were racking up #1 hits because it wasn't done, unless you were in the more dance genres. So one could argue that it gives her an unfair advantage of sorts. The same with her three songs in the top 10 thing. Both impressive achievements but the rise of "featuring" sure makes it easier (in fact I wouldn't be surprised if more acts do that in the next few years), and thus it's hard to put it on the same par as Elvis or anyone else who has done it...

Edited January 9, 201115 yr by edward88
January 9, 201115 yr Are we talking about 1 number 1 per year? I think so. Although the place I read it at didn't specify whether it was 1 per year, or at least one per year, but I'm not sure if that makes a difference.
No, NOT ABBA! You've fallen into the same trap as I did, if you search everyhit.com for Abba's #1s. They didn't make #1 at all in 1975, but Mamma Mia entered the chart in 1975, becoming #1 in late January 1976. Abba therefore only managed three consecutive years. I was hoping Frida and Agnetha could have claimed the women's achievement before Rihanna did, but they can't.
January 9, 201115 yr Oh yeah, you are right (polyhex actually). So thats just Elvis, the Beatles, Westlife and Rhianna then? And it is one or more per year as the source quotes Elvis as the previous solo act to do this. He had more than one in some years. Edited January 9, 201115 yr by Olympus
January 9, 201115 yr Are we talking about 1 number 1 per year? We're talking about having at least one number #1 in each calendar year. Whether it was one or more than one isn't relevant to this particular stat; it seems Rihanna is still the first woman to achieve it.
