It's ridiculous to outright ban it, they could just make a heavily edited radio version and a second video more appropriate for TV if they absolutely had to, but banning it is just stupid.

In 1991 when 'I Wanna Sex You Up' by Colour Me Badd went to no. 1 in the UK. Quite why it managed it I shall never know. Thing is back in 1991 kids were genuinely shocked if there was a song with the word "sex" in the title. Kids back in 1991 laughed in a "you can't say that" kinda away when people said they wanted to "do it". We were so much more naive compared to the kids of today.

Oh dear that indeed was, is and always will be a horrible song

Metallica didn't get a #1 album with the title S&M so not holding my breath for Rihanna :P

How retarded, maybe it won't be the smash everyone expected it to be. And I agree with Dré, most likely only in UK. Yawn.
Why can't they just bleep out the words "sex" and any other bad things in the song.

And what is actually bad about sex? :D

Daytime TV Yes, the video is quite full on, however radio - have to say I'm torn, I can see WHY they are doing it, but like the original post says, is it necessary in this day and age?? On the other side though, people could argue kids know about this stuff BECAUSE of the music they listen to, but it's a bit like closing the stable door, the damage has already been done!
"S&M" is already top 10 on Australian radio... don't get why this is banned too? It's "If U Seek Amy" all over again.
I was reading about that a while ago actually. It seemed the worse thing about that situation was that all the commercial radio stations still played the song, and it was fine for them in the end, and just ended up making Radio 1 look strict and overly-conservative. And apparently they ignored the song on Top of the Pops or something, aswell! :o

It'd be so embarrassing if there was less censoring of the song in the US than the UK. :(

Yes, it was banned from TOTP as well which made them look rather silly when it got to number one and then stayed there for five weeks.

Je T'Aime... Moi Non Plus by Jane Birkin and Serge Gainsbourg is another song which went to number one after being banned by the BBC.

I'd be interested to see what the poll results would be if we were debating a 50 Cent or Lil Wayne track rather than Rihanna...

It's funny how the media NEVER LEARN the lesson that banning something invariably has the opposite effect to the one intended.

Well, I pretty much can predict the results. :P

It wouldn't hurt to ban a Rihanna song off the radio. Seriously, she's so overexposed these days its putting me off her.

Cant really question it being a hit though, It'll still be huge, its #15 already.

I don't understand how they can ban this and not Rude Boy which is lyrically far more sexual IMO.

Was it played on the chart show today? I see it's No.20 but didn't listen as we had guests. How ridiculous of it to be called Come On in the chart list on the Radio 1 website.

This is so stupid, it's not even that bad. sex isn't a swearword and if they blanked out the bit about chains & whips then the song would be fine.

But if GaGa came out with a song like this (*coughs* LoveGame*) then she's being 'artistic' and 'expressing her sexuality' smdh double standards in the music industry

Found out that a very odd edited version with weird sound effects was played. It still stands that the original version is banned as people say I got the story wrong. I didn't. They asked the record company for an edited version. If they hadn't got one it wouldn't have been played.

They didn't quite ignore the song on TOTP, they just mentioned that Frankie Goes to Hollywood was no.1 with 'Relax' and then the programme ended. But is still made them look like completer numpties, TOTP traditionally ended with the no.1 song, not to show that was a huge sense of anti-climax, to say the least.
