Lady GaGa is heading for her fifth UK number one single, with Born This Way on course to replace Jessie J’s Price Tag at the top of the chart.

The title track from GaGa’s forthcoming second album, Born This Way entered the chart at number three last Sunday with just two days’ sales, having become the latest example of the on air/on sale policy of making tracks available to buy almost as soon as they are played on the radio.

Now in its first full week on sale, the single has opened up a 9,000 sales lead over the Island/Lava-issued Price Tag by Jessie J featuring B.oB, according to OCC data. Price Tag secured its second week at the top last weekend, having itself initially won a commercial release around the time it started winning widespread airplay support.

Jive/Columbia release Champion by Chipmunk featuring Chris Brown is placed third for the week so far, just a few hundred sales ahead of Eyes Wide Shut by JLS featuring Tinie Tempah. The Epic-issued single’s sales are up 253% on the week, currently putting it fourth ahead of XL act Adele’s long-running Rolling In The Deep. JLS are also a new entry in 25th spot with Broken Strings.

Virgin act You Me At Six are also cropping up twice in the Top 40, showing up as new arrivals in eighth position with Chiddy Bang with Rescue Me and in 28th place with Knew It Was You. Between their two entries, Interscope/Polydor’s Far East Movement are in 13th position with new entry Rocketeer, recorded with OneRepublic’s Ryan Tedder .

Albums

Ahead of the Brits making any impact on the rankings, XL’s Adele is currently some distance ahead in first place on the artist albums midweeks as 21 looks to spend a fourth successive week at number one. Below her are the same two albums that were two and three on last Sunday’s chart: Elektra/Atlantic act Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans and Def Jam/Mercury’s Rihanna with Loud.

Island act PJ Harvey could be on course for her first ever Top 10 album, with the newly-issued Let England Shake presently appearing as a new entry at four, although albums boosted by tonight’s Brits could change matters. Her current chart peak is 11, achieved with Dry in 1992 and White Chalk in 2007. Lower down the Top 40, there are new albums appearing from Mogwai (through the Rock Nation label), Ovni’s Gruff Rhys and Polydor’s Bright Eyes.

Adele's Brits performance goes to number one on iTunes chart

Source: MW

10:46 | Thursday February 17, 2011

By Ben Cardew

Adele’s version of Someone Like You live from the Brits has climbed to number one on the iTunes UK charts, with the original recording at four.

This year was the first time that all of the live performances from the Brits were made available to download from iTunes immediately after the event, following the release of Dizzee Rascal and Florence + The Machine’s You Got The Dirtee Love last year.

That song got to number two but it looks like Adele could provide an even bigger hit: as well as topping the iTunes chart, Someone Like You has risen to three in midweek sales flashes, from 43 last week.

In addition, her album 21 looks certain to top the albums chart for the fourth straight week: it has sold more than 90,000 copies so far this week, more than 60,000 ahead of its nearest competitor, Bruno Mars’ Doo-Wops & Hooligans.

Lower down the iTunes top 100, there are four more songs live from the Brits: Take That’s Kidz (currently at 28); Plan B’s She Said Prayin’ (37), Mumford & Sons Timshel (43) and Cee Lo Green and Paloma Faith’s Forget You at 45. It is not currently clear if sales of Brits downloads are eligible for the Official Charts Company chart.

On the albums chart, Mumford & Sons, Tinie Tempah, Plan B and Arcade Fire – who all performed and won awards at the Brits – appear to be the greatest beneficiaries in sales terms outside of Adele.

Mumford’s Sigh No More - winner of best British album - looks set to climb back into the top five from 15; Tinie’s Disc-Overy should go back into the top 10 from 25, as should Plan B’s The Defamation of Strickland Banks from 24.

As well as playing live at the Brits, Arcade Fire won two awards and this has helped their latest album The Suburbs back up the charts: it should go back into the top 20 from 52 last week.

Laura Marling was the surprise winner of British female solo artist at the Brits. She didn’t play live on the night but her triumph has sent her most recent album I Speak Because I Can back up the charts from outside the top 75.

Adele set for Brits chart double

Friday February 18, 2011

Source: MW

By Ben Cardew

Adele could be on her way to a Brits-inspired chart double this Sunday with Someone Like You, the song she performed on the night, currently neck and neck with Lady GaGa’s Born This Way for the number one slot.

This year’s event saw all of the Brits live performances – except for Rihanna’s medley – made available for sale via iTunes immediately after the event finished.

Adele’s Someone Like You has been by far the biggest beneficiary, with the live version of the song making number one on the iTunes UK chart within 24 hours of her performance. It is still at number one on iTunes, with the original version of the song at four.

On the OCC chart, both versions count towards one chart placing and the strong sales of the live performance have helped Someone Like You to climb the sales flashes, putting it just over 100 sales behind the early pace setter, Lady GaGa’s Born This Way.

Last week’s number one, Jessie J’s Price Tag, is also selling very well and could still pip both to the top of the charts this Sunday.

On the albums chart, Adele looks certain to top the rundown for a fourth straight week with 21. It has already sold more than 100,000 copies this week, taking it past the half a million mark in the UK.

I think Lady Gaga might be #1 today, the thing is can she hold out for the reminder of the week, I've got a funny feeling Jessie J will be #1 on tomorrow's update after the Brits tonight.
It will be an interesting battle betwen Jessie J and GaGa for the No1 but I think GaGa will be No1 come Sunday. You And Me At Six could challenge for a Top15 place.

I HOPE NOT! ENOUGH with the PT! and she's not performing... and GAGA's lead is still good and was bigger in the last 2 days.

You Me At Six @ No.8:

Little bit gobsmacked. Just received a text from our MD at our label saying. “ Congratulations, you're number 8 in the UK top 40“. I'm going to sit down for a bit.

update coming shortly, please be patient, as the first update always takes time, to see what's going up or down

Does anyone actually know why JLS B-sides always appear in the first update ? Pretty sure I read once that it was their physical sales, which haven't been added yet

PJ Harvey Top 5

How fantastic to see the one of best British female artists going Top 10

Shame Gruff is only scraping the Top 30 - not bad for him though I guess

Be patient for artist updates, they are coming shortly

Wonder where the brilliant Ringo Deathstarr album will chart? Probably around 200.

Shame that Mogwai are only scraping the top 20 - definitely been affected by internet leaks that one. I think that accounts for why a lot of indie records are not selling so well these days - they tend to appear more online than any other kind.

Hmm. Can GaGa hold the lead do you reckon??

Too early to tell, she has a 9k lead over Jessie, but with the Brits anything can happen between tomorrow and Friday.
