I don't listen to Radio in the UK or the charts, it got too infuriating that brilliant music from Europe was shunned for utter $h!te.

So I just listen to the best Scandinavia has to offer on my iPod when I want. Now the music always sounds good to me ^_^

What a bizarre thread  So this "all-time low" has literally just started in the last month? How can it have plunged to those depths in such a short time period? Most of the artists in the charts are the same as the ones that were there a few months ago, and heck, even most of the songs are the same (or the same kind). I don't understand what's different, I'm afraid. Please explain to me Griffo, because your first post hasn't done a very good job (I could look at the chart from January or whatever and say exactly the same - the landscape of popular music doesn't completely change in a couple of months).

Honestly, there was really no need to start this lame, attention-seeking thread just to claim you don't like the songs in the charts right now. Couldn't you have done that in the iTunes thread or something?

I do like RnB! :o

But thank you, best comment I've seen so far! :)

Oh, and the charts were fantastic in February, don't diss them! ;)

Oh, sorry about that. Well, just substitute that with a genre you don't like then.

I think the problem with me with February, was not only the chart, but at that point it was literally like the only four artists in existance were Rihanna, Adele, Chris Brown and Jessie J. The four of them were just dominating everything. I think Rihanna might've had 5 songs in the top 40 at some point. And I think there was one point where Adele, Chris Brown and Jessie J, all had 2 songs in the top 10, like all three of them at the same time! :o Not to mention, I listen to the radio a lot, and those four dominated the airwaves too, especially on Capital (although understandbly, since they were dominating the charts I guess). Yeah 3x was the worst. I'm absolutely sick of it now. :(

Lower down the charts, it might've been more interesting, but the top end of the chart was just :drama: for me. And all their songs, Do It Like a Dude, Price Tag, Champion, Yeah 3x, S&M, just everything really, just sat there in the top 10 for like 2 months, whilst loads of great songs peaked at #11 and dropped. That was a really frustrating time for me tbh.

It was so bad, there was also a point where the YTD top 10 and the current top 10 were almost the same! :o

I think it was really a combination of me not overly liking the music at the top of the charts, and also the chart behaviour of the songs being infuriating. But yeah, I guess we all have different tastes at the end of the day. I hated February and March 2010 too, so perhaps it's just something about that time of year for me.

They would have complained that I was off topic and a troll  Sorry, mate, it's the state of mind I'm in at the moment.

I couldn't agree more. Everythis is so contrived and bland; most music I listen to these days isn't new. There is almost no variety, any commercial radio station you put on seems to be playing the same song (or 7 songs that all sound identical!). I couldn't name ten songs in the top 40!

P.S. I can't find my pipe and slippers.

That's what I think when I'm listening to Kerrang! sometimes. Although that station is genre specific, so I'll let it off.

Yes, what IS the point of this thread? It is just personal opinion.

Well, Buzzjack is a music enertainment discussion. :P

The variety of popular top 40 music is at an all time low. There's barely been any rock/alt music in the singles chart this year, and any tracks that have made the top 40 only stick around for a week (with Noah and the Whale being the notable exception).

That's like me for spring/summer! :cheer:

Guess we can agree on autumn/winter then! ;)

EDIT: Well, some of winter :P

Indeed, but you state it all as fact (kind of) - instead of asking if music is an all time low, you state it is!

The only discussion from then on is people saying you are totally wrong.

I think it was worse mid/late 00s when the chart was loads of r'b and US rap. The charts go in cycles though - there was alot of indie in the mid/late 90s (and some in the mid 00s), pop in the late 80s and late 90s/early 00s, dance in early - mid 90s and 99/00............. We seem to be a bit more diverse at the moment imo as there is no 'type' of music doing way better than another.

I didn't intend to state it as fact. :P

Ok then, I'm sorry if it seemed like I did. :(

Oh, actually, there was like a couple of weeks last Autumn/Winter which I HATED aswell.

There was a week or something, where I think JLS (with a really boring slow song), Take That (with a really boring slow song), Westlife (with a really boring slow song), McFly (with a really boring slow song) were top 10 at the same time? Or something like that. And there was Shayne Ward aswell, and the X Factor charity songs, and Make You Feel My Love and Your Song. And then Just the Way You Are and Forget You hanging around for ever to top it off.

That was also a terrible time for me. But last autumn was very good, in general imo, bar those couple of boyband-fest weeks!

Exactly! :)

And I remember the Top 4 consisted of ballads for 2 weeks!!! Good times...

The iTunes thread always goes off-topic. It's like a haven of random music and chart discussion, with occasional iTunes talk.

It's not the premise of this thread that I find bizarre - it's perfectly understandable that someone would think popular music is poor right now, and they're allowed that opinion. I just find it completely ridiculous that it comes from someone who seemed to love the charts two months ago and now thinks they're at an ALL TIME LOW. It essentially reads to me as an "I don't like the songs in the charts right now as much as before" thread, headlined under a more attention-grabbing title, and with reasons that could apply for any chart from the last couple of years. Hence why I made my previous comment.

For what it's worth though, I agree that popular music is at a low right now (although not an all-time one), although I'd say it's more because of the complete lack of variety that Brett-Butler mentioned. This was more of a gradual process though (I'd say from 2005 onwards), rather than a literal one month thing. I have no idea how someone can swing to that opinion so quickly in such a short time frame

Yes, but the indie songs went Top 20. The indie songs right now (bar Noah & The Whale) don't get near Top 30!
