Yes it was a big shock when Rhythm of Love only entered at 9.

Kylie’s fans were growing up with her and even though BTDYK and SBIT were much dancier she was seen as uncool, mainly because of the PWL connection. Her fans just moved on to other acts.

LAP by Madonna didn’t sell more because she didn’t ever promote here in the U.K. It was also harder for albums to sell massive back then, vinyl and cassette albums were £5.99 I think and CD was only just taking off. She released Dear Jessie which made an impact but she wasn’t in the video. It all set the scene for a massive 1990/91, her fame and sales rose to massive levels.

OCC have published the Top 40 of 1990:

34 TEARS ON MY PILLOW KYLIE MINGUE 1

38 BETTER THE DEVIL YOU KNOW KYLIE MINGUE 2

'Step Back in Time' was #86 that year too.

Always looks weird that 'Tears' did better than 'Devil', they did have pretty similar chart runs and there wasn't a lot of sales difference, but 'Devil' is far superior and iconic.

Isn't the UK singles chart 1 - 100? I see chart runs that are 1 - 200.

It used to be 1-200.

'Marry the Night' re-entered the download chart at #167 last week after falling out from #15 the previous week.

Also last week, 'Step Back in Time: The Definitive Collection' was #198 on the album downloads, 'Dancing' was #115 on radio and 'Can't Get You Out of My Head' was #87 on TV! :o

From the OCC:

To date, Can't Get You Out Of My Head has UK chart sales totaling 1.53 million, including a massive 1.2 million pure sales ... and 38 million streams.

The song was on 1.37m as of the end of July 2019 which means its averaging 1.4k a week, ~300 up on what it was averaging pre-'Step Back in Time'.

Last November, the OCC gave a total of 1.5m but it was rounded to the nearest 100k - as I suspected at the time, it hadn't get reached that mark (using the 1.4k average weekly sales, it'll have been on about 1.465m).

Are there ARIA chart runs somewhere for Kylie?

With all of that said, it's always been surprising to me how Madonna just had the better UK chart positions and peaks than Kylie did even in the 90s. Of all of K's 90s records, I'm most disappointed that Confide in Me didn't make such a huge impact on the charts in terms of sales or longevity. Wasn't its chart run something like 2-4-6-15?

Culturally Confide in Me performed well.

It also got Kylie noticed by those who may previously have overlooked her but I imagine it wasn't as big a hit as hoped for.

It disappointingly missed number 1 and had an average chart run even for that period but it is a very well known song that opened the door to longevity for Kylie which was crucially important.

Channel 5 have counted down the biggest hits of the 80s with up to date pure sales (excluding streams) and 'Especially for You' was on 1,014,662, an increase of 6,605 from September 2017. The show also mentioned that Woolworths put in an advanced order of 400,000 copies of the single for its 800 stores.
^^ Crazy pre-order figures, especially as the likes of HMV, Our Price etc., were around at the time too.
The pre orders were huge for that time, i was so happy when it eventually made number 1 and now its great to see its over the million sales aswell.

'Kylie Christmas' had re-entered at #147 on the w/e 6 January - highest position since 2016!

NE: 12-31-26-18-22-20-91 (first entry: 26/11/15) 7w

RE: 165-127-122-41-65-45-62-88 (second entry: 17/11/16) 8w

RE: 197 (third entry: 21/12/17) 1w

RE: 199 (fourth entry: 02/01/20) 1w

RE: 195 (fifth entry: 31/12/20) 1w

RE: 147 (sixth entry: 06/01/22) 1w

Total: 19w

Kylie Christmas sold 1,053 in the week it was #147! Raising its total to 158,141. A few weeks ago I thought it might have been on less than 158k, so it's nice to know it's done a bit better than I anticipated!

It sold 944 copies in the previous week (24th Dec i.e. w/e 30th Dec), but it was quite far away from being Top 200. The #200 that week sold 1,038.

In the most recent chart, Disco must have finally overtaken Kylie Christmas. Disco's sales total is now 159,196. It sold 1,077 copies at #153. I wonder if it'll be able to pass 160,000 by the 4th February chart? It needs to sell 804 copies this week in order to do that (if it sold that much, it's likely that it wouldn't make the Top 200 this week - it probably needs to do approaching 900 to stay in the chart).

Really happy Disco is ahead of Kylie Christmas as its a far far better Kylie album, Disco should pull clear of it now as Disco will hopefully manage even even 300 a week for a few more weeks or could be even closer to 500.
The pre orders were huge for that time, i was so happy when it eventually made number 1 and now its great to see its over the million sales aswell.

Sales: 1,053

Total sales: 158,141

Digital: 19

Streaming: 1,009
