Posted August 22, 201114 yr Murs, Young and McElderry bring reality to charts Source: MW 11:01 | Tuesday August 23, 2011 By Paul Williams The new season of The X Factor will be marked this coming weekend by a takeover of the top end of the UK sales charts by former reality show contestants with Olly Murs likely to lead the singles countdown and Will Young and Joe McElderry battling for albums supremacy. Singles Murs, X Factor runner-up to McElderry in 2009, looks on course to score his second UK number one single this Sunday with his newly-released Epic/Syco single Heart Skips A Beat, featuring Rizzle Kicks, having opened up a lead of around 8,000 sales, according to the Official Charts Company. It is one of three brand new Sony singles filling the week’s top three slots presently with Columbia’s Calvin Harris placed second with Feel So Close and RCA’s Will Young third with Jealously. Ministry of Sound’s Wretch 32 with Don’t Go featuring Josh Kumra is fourth in the new chart week having debuted at number one last Sunday. On singles Noel Gallagher could open his chart account as a solo artist with a Top 10 single as the Death Of You And Me – billed as by Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds – is at present ranked as the week’s eighth top seller. Wherever it eventually finishes on this Sunday’s final chart the Sour Mash-issued single should comfortably beat the highest singles chart peak to date of his former Oasis colleagues in Beady Eye. The Roller reached number 31 earlier this year. The reality show theme continues lower down the chart with country singer Scotty McCreery, who won the 10th season of American Idol in May, turning up in 27th place with For Once In My Life. That is one place higher than Interscope/Poldyor’s Stefano Langone with the newly-released Hello. Albums Young, whose auditions on his way to winning Pop Idol began 10 years ago this month, is doing even better on albums where his fifth studio album Echoes is the week so far’s biggest seller, outselling closest rival and fellow new release Classic by Joe McElderry by more than two copies to one. The early sales performance of Classic, which is released by Universal’s Decca, suggests something of a chart comeback for 2009 X Factor winner McElderry whose first album Wide Wake debuted and peak at number three last November but swiftly declined. In a very busy week for new singles and albums, Young and McElderry’s albums are among six new titles showing up among the 10 biggest album sellers so far this week with Levels/Ministry of Sound’s Wretch 32 ranked fourth with his debut album Black And White, Atlantic/Necessary’s Hard-Fi are sixth with Killer Sounds, the RCA-handled What Matters Most by Barbra Streisand is seventh and rapper The Game’s Geffen/Polydor-issued The Red Album is in 10th place. The huge influx of new albums has sent MTA/Mercury act Nero’s first album Welcome Reality, which debuted at one last Sunday, down to fifth spot, while XL’s Adele is down 2-3 with 21. ++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++ Top 40 Only Singles 1 Olly Murs feat. August 23, 201114 yr Author Joe McElderry is #2 in the UK mids, having sold 9.3k!!! According to IG! Never saw that coming
August 23, 201114 yr Surely Barbra Streisand will get top 5? She had a #1 album a couple of years ago I do recall, unless this isn't new material.
August 23, 201114 yr Top 3 singles are all new entries, and Will's album #1 update coming up Yes, top 2 albums are new entries too. :w00t:
August 23, 201114 yr Joe outpeaking the last album isn't that much of a surprise considering this album actually targets the audience that by and large voted for him, unlike his début...
August 23, 201114 yr WTF are Stefano Langone and Scotty McCreery doing in the singles chart?! I really don't know :/ They're contestants from the last season of American Idol but as far as I can tell they're not selling anywhere, it's also suspicious that they're next to each other, some kind of system error? It could at least be Casey Abrams and Haley Reinhart :( Anyway :w00t: @ Olly and Will :D
August 23, 201114 yr Noel #8 and in the 30s with his b-side, but his b-side is top 100 on iTunes so I'm not sure if it is his b-side in the chart or a JLS type scenario....
