September 8, 201113 yr I don't recall a British artist having this much worldwide or domestic success ever before in my lifetime! Adele = nu Beatles!
September 8, 201113 yr Adele's success is just awe inspiring. Like GD says, not since The Beatles has there ever been a British act who has taken the world by storm. 'Someone Like You' has made a remarkable climb to the top. Just proves how much impact a live performance can have. For us Brits, it came with The Brit Awards when Adele stole the show. Now America has their "moment" thanks to the MTV VMA's 2011. I reckon Adele will hold at #1 for a couple of weeks too.
September 8, 201113 yr Something very satisfying about Someone Like You getting to no. 1 this week. Weeks and weeks of slow climb due entirely to word-of-mouth (no promotion). A piano-driven ballad of a style pop radio almost never touches. And then one performance on a Sunday night that catapults the song to no. 1. I don't know if Adele is the biggest British chart success since the Beatles... remember George Michael racked up SIX no. 1s on the Billboard Hot 100 in a span of 6 years (plus 2 earlier with Wham)... but she's certainly up there. She will likely finish 2011 with the top selling album and single, and another top 5 selling single. Incredible.
September 8, 201113 yr I am SO PLEASED for Adele (I seem to say this in this thread every week.) I thought Someone Like You might have the frustrating success of Leona's Better In Time, so I'm so glad to see it go all the way to #1 for her!
September 8, 201113 yr So happy for Adele. The performances of 'Someone Like You' have been incredible.

Well, Someone Like You was getting quite a lot of radio airplay beforehand, to be fair. And I actually think it would've got to #1 even without the TV performance, although obviously in a month or two, rather than now, especially considering that Rolling in the Deep was a MUCH bigger hit in the US than it was in the UK.
September 8, 201113 yr Just when I thought she couldn't break any more records she goes and does it again. :P
September 8, 201113 yr Author I reckon Adele will hold at #1 for a couple of weeks too. Maroon 5 will be back at #1 next week.
September 8, 201113 yr While you should never underestimate Adele's success, I don't think Someone Like You will get to #1 again. She will hang around the top 5 for a while but her airplay is too low at the moment and unless she does more promo her airplay and sales won't align well enough for her to take the top spot IMO.
September 8, 201113 yr Maroon 5 will be back at #1 next week. I wouldn't be too sure. It all depends if Adele can maintain the sales gap versus the airplay gains. As many have said above, Adele has a knack of getting it right. The buzz around her is enormous. I reckon she needs 45 k more sales , normally. She's still at #1 on iTunes , but M5 have increased, at 82% , compared to 69% last week's first few days... It will be a closer race , surely, but it all depends now on how many people will buy SLY versus MLJ. And if she loses the spot (unlikely IMHO), then she will return to no.1 the week after :) .

September 8, 201113 yr Someone Like You must also be the largest climb to #1 of the year so far, I think. I'd guess Black and Yellow was the biggest of the year until now, due to the Superbowl, but I could be wrong. Most of the other songs either debuted there, or climbed rather smoothly and gradually. I'd guess Black and Yellow was the biggest of the year until now, due to the Superbowl, but I could be wrong. Most of the other songs either debuted there, or climbed rather smoothly and gradually. It's been a pretty steady (albeit fast) climb: 97-85-73-57-51-34-19-01 (8) Black and Yellow only went 4-1 so you must be thinking of something else?
September 8, 201113 yr YES! Brilliant for Adele :o Amazing Billboard top 3 overall actually - much better than ours. Shame Foster The People will probably not manage #1 :(
September 8, 201113 yr YES! Brilliant for Adele :o Amazing Billboard top 3 overall actually - much better than ours. Shame Foster The People will probably not manage #1 :( How times have changed. At one time it was always the UK charts putting the US charts to shame. As I've said in the past, the addition of download sales has been the best thing to happen to the US charts.

As I've said in the past, the addition of download sales has been the best thing to happen to the US charts. I can't really speak for the past, but certainly now, the US are definitely putting us to shame at the moment. :( I really hope our charts become more like theirs. Maybe not so slow moving, but in terms of the quality of the music, and the genres. It's been a pretty steady (albeit fast) climb: 97-85-73-57-51-34-19-01 (8) Black and Yellow only went 4-1 so you must be thinking of something else? Thanks. :D Yeah, I do think Someone Like You could've been a US #1 anyway. As you pointed out, it was climbing really well anyway (it was a faster climb than RITD did, and look how well that did in the end!), and its radio airplay was sky-rocketing too, even before the performance! About Black and Yellow, I think that was it actually. 4-1 is quite a big climb by their standards. I might check through all of them if I'm bored, but I'm pretty sure most of them climbed to #1 from only #2 or #3, and Born This Way and Hold It Against Me obviously both debuted straight there. September 8, 201113 yr I'm loving the US charts as of now (perhaps it's because they don't blacklist Britney). I didn't see another #1 for Adele. GET IT GURL. And she's tucked up in bed too! :cheer:
September 9, 201113 yr Adele succes is amazing but lets not forget before her we had "THE SPICE GIRLS" so she;s the most succefull british act since them.
