How on earth is this illegal ? :/

It is technically illegal, but the law is just about to be changed.

I have never downloaded illegally. What right do I have to free music? None whatsoever. Before downloads, if I wanted a single I'd save my pocket money for it. Albums would usually have to wait until birthdays and Christmas. Like it has been said, if you can't afford what you want, tough, life isn't fair and it's not like your entitled to have what you want when you want. 99p is also not too expensive for one track (although it does feel like a bit of a cheat when everything used to be 79p) I'll understand illegal downloading a bitmire when the prices actually become ridiculous. I will never illegally download because it's not just illegal, it's also immoral.

I laugh at those who think 99p is too expensive for a single and that they can't afford it. 99p? Good grief, when I first started buying singles in 1984 they must have been around that price. Albums certainly were in the 5-6 GBP range. Adjusting for inflation and higher disposable income singles were *far* more expensive 25 years ago than they are today, yet still people complain they can't get everything they want.

Kids today, they don't know they're born.....

And thank goodness! What a bizarre law.

I don't think it's "expensive" BUT I do find it odd that the price of downloads are going UP? they were 79p now 99p, I would have thought at this time they would have gone down not up. That's why I buy my singles from tunetribe as they only cost 55p

Of course, it's not TOO difficult to buy one song. Think about how a kid is supposed to buy, say, 5 songs? Let alone by 200 songs, which they probably want to!!

And what good is £20 at their birthdays going to do when there's also things such as clothes, computer games, movies, etc. that they also want?

The truth is, most kids who aren't born in middle-class families can't buy everthing they want! Therefore, it is difficult for them to buy songs, even for 99p. They have to make a lot of sacrifices to buy music, just like they had to in the past aswell.

It's called living within your means. If you can't afford something you do without it. It's people living beyond their means that has f***ed up the economy....

Yeah, exactly. People can't say it's cheap, 99p for a song. I know it looks cheap, but who wants to spend a month listening to the same 5 songs again and again? Even if nobody illegally downloaded, most people wouldn't be able to buy music, simply because they can't.

I highly doubt anyone downloads music illegally to feel "big" or "clever", to be honest.

Personally I don't doubt for a second that they don't. ;)

That living in your dreams sometimes DON'T work. How about your a fan of asian music like me and can't buy/download the songs off iTunes or in the UK and HAS to result in illegal downloading? Sometimes when you're a kid and your parents don't let you buy CDs online and import it to your home and you just can't get hold of a CD to listen to. Just say to yourself oh well I like the music (or LOVE it) but I can't get a LEGAL way to obtain the music so I just go and download music legally and support only the UK iTunes even though I don't favour it as much at times? And what about some songs which are only released digitally WITHOUT physically and they're foreign music and there's no way to download it legally in your own country?

Also for some people who are absolutely into music and has over 2,000+ songs in your iTunes, are you really going to spend £££££ on your CDs? I myself has spent over £3,000 on CDs ALONE and excluding downloads (which is only about £50). If I end up downloading everything or buying the entire album just because I love one song from it and do it legally, I would be ending up spending £10,000+.....

Nowadays there's far too much music out there for you to download legally. I can guarantee some music artists would rather fans hear their songs for free if they cannot afford, rather than just living without a song you love most because you wouldn't illegally download something.

That is my opinion in this matter..

I do hope you're joking.

Loads of artists have said as you did, that they'd rather people obtain and enjoy songs illegally than not enjoy them at all. Shakira is one I can think of. And you also have a valid point when to people who like Asian music, we just can\t get them legally. Same with most Scandipop.

DON'T steal. It's not big nor claver. Listen to Shaky Fan.

As I see it, people download music illegally for one main reason - it's tooo easy to get away with it.

I might well have wanted to buy 5 singles a week when I was 16, but couldn't possibly have afforded it, so that was just too bad. I didn't steal what I didn't have the money to buy.

If you were like me, you just taped it off the radio, or by reel-to-reel cassette instead. :P

Home taping?

I couldn't *possibly* comment :)

All this "music is too expensive" - it's never ever been as relatively cheap as it is today. A single hasn't been 89p since probably the late 1970s.

I admit I have downloaded illegally, but it was only ever songs I already owned in vinyl or cassette form when I basically converted my collection years ago, in the days of the original Napster. I wouldn't know where the illegal sites are now, and wouldn't really want to know either.

BTW, how much lower would singles prices have to be, to dissuade people here from downloading illegally?
