I've heard it 4 times in the past 2 days at work. Its not Dappy thats put me off it, its the cheesey lyrics, bad melody, keychange, and choir that make it think its one of the worst songs of the year.

Are you sure you just don't hate Dappy?

Just kidding, your post was spot on.

I'm sure it's only a matter of time before we have an embarrassing situation where there are 52 brand new UK #1 singles in a calendar year. Wouldn't be at all surprised if that year was 2012 either. -_-

2011 the year when the reactionaries regained control of the uk top 40 again!!

Delighted No Regrets is number one... Couldn't have happened to a nicer man!

Eurgh at Jar Of Hearts knocking All Fired Up out of the top 10 :(

Edit: All Fired Up back at #10

Why is that "embarrassing"? What about when the Black Eyed Peas spent 26 weeks at #1 in the US in 2009? I'd say that was a bit more embarrassing (although I could tolerate that, since the songs involved were brilliant, in all fairness, but still, how boring!).

Also, in Japan they have a brand new #1 pretty much every single week (although there were a couple of instances where an artist had 2 consecutive weeks at #1, but with different songs). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_Orico...singles_of_2010

This happened last year as well and people said exactly the same things and the chart slowed down again in the new year. The same will happen this time and every year from now on.

It's embarrassing because it shows the songs have no staying power. I remember 43 tracks getting to no.1 in 2000 and some on apalling sales and chart runs in the long run. Most have been forgotton like a lot of the more recent one week wonders will be forgotton. I know you hate seeing a song have more than a week at no.1 but surely you must see this point?

Well, I can't remember 2000's charts, but would you like Rihanna to get 10 weeks at #1 again? Yeah, it's remembered. But she's had songs that spent 2 weeks at #2 which everybody also remembers, and that's less boring in the charts.

I reason I'd prefer on air, on sale would be because it favours the type of music I like (American urban music). But it wouldn't make the charts more interesting imo. It would, however, be a better reflection of what's popular, but the charts would be really boring.

I didn't mind Umbrella being no.1 that long (although it did beat Maroon 5  ) because it was exciting (I'd never known a no.1 to stay that long since I'd been listening to the charts-a good 10 years!) and I thought the competition in the later weeks was extremely poor by comparison.

Well, for me, if we look at Someone Like You, for example, it was #1 for 5 weeks, and only one of the weeks was a "battle" (the first week when it was against Lady Gaga ane Jessie J). Every other week it was very predictable that it'd be #1 (or not #1 in that week in the middle with Nicole). So apart from 1 week, I found it's run at #1 very boring. It was no more interesting than One Direction getting #1 this week. Just as predictable imo.

10 weeks at no.1? That's nothing. You should have been around in 1991 when Bryan Adams spent 16 weeks at no.1. At first it was indeed exciting as chart records were shattered, but at the end I was glad to see the back of it to be honest. Once it slipped from no.1 it actually dropped down the chart very quickly.

That's really weird about Brian. Maybe the record label stopped manufacturing the CDs for the single?

I was around in 1991 but I was only 3

its easy to pick songs like umbrella and i got a feeling to prove your arguement but they are the exception even with OA/OS and they are career defining and massive era defining pop songs!!

I'm sure "Everything I Do (I Do It For You)" was eventually deleted; not sure exactly when, but with its chart run, I imagine it happened towards the end of its spell at Number 1.

I dread to think how the charts of 20 years ago would look if the same chart landscape as today applied - mind you, it's about this time 20 years ago when you really started to see the effects of pre-release marketing come into play on the chart.
