On one hand, yay for Iris doing well because it is an undeniable classic, but on the other hand why should Moves Like Jagger miss out again? It's ridiculous to say one song deserves number 1 more than another but it's just not the best circumstance for any song (even a great one) to reach number 1, if it took a shit performance of it by a cocky twat then that it's not the best number tbqh.

Bit annoying for Maroon 5 to stall 4 weeks at #2, it could have been 4 to 6 weeks at #1, just what the chart needs to slow the current weekly #1s.
Iris is one of the best songs of all time. Moves Like Jagger is quite average compared to it. Wouldn't you want the better song to do better in the chart? :P

Iris is good yes, but the reason why it's up there is after a really bad performance.

I watched the episode myself later, after seeing Iris shoot up on iTunes, so I was expecting something big. When Frankie gave his weak performance of it, I was quite let down. If that's the performance that gets it to #1, I would feel less happy about it than if there had been a totally new and awesome performance of it.

Does that really matter though? The important thing is that it's so high in the chart after all these years. ^_^

Would've been deserved for the song to get a better tribute to it... *grump*

But people are not buying the Frankie version, they are buying the normal version

But people are not buying the Frankie version, they are buying the normal version

It's the reason that's important. I shall have to LOOK at Iris at #1 and remind myself that it was some kid who's compensating for himself by acting like a prat on national television who is the reason that it's #1.

Maybe it reminded people watching what a good song it is. Maybe they all thought the original was better. But some part of it, to me, still feels wrong.

(BTW, of course I'm happy it's getting a new peak. Circumstances could have been better, that's all)

It does annoy me when songs, even ones that I like, get boosts for reasons which I strongly disapprove of. Like

Viva La Vida and apparently Fix You are being used on Glee this series

, so although I love those songs and they'll be boosted, I'll still be annoyed that the source of the boost is

fecking GLEE

.

I'm not too bothered about why Iris is back though, it's just a good song from the past that deserved a slightly better peak than #26, maybe not quite #1/2 but it's a bit of a classic anyway so why not?

I don't really care why a song charts high like this. Yes, the performance was rubbish, but at least people are getting to discover the original and they probably all enjoy it more.
So how does everyone feel about "Someone like you" getting its video premiere on Thurday ? Could it get back to the top of Itunes in the next few days ?

I think a video would mean it'll stick around in the T40 until the end of the year - rather impressive I must say. Would've preferred a 'Set Fire to the Rain' video beforehand though, seeing as it's starting to climb elsewhere in the world - whereas 'Someone Like You' has no doubt reached a global peak.

On the topic of 'Iris', I think it'd be quite amusing for it to reach #1 now. It'd certainly make headlines and prove how influential shows like The X-Factor really are. However, 'Moves Like Jagger' deserves it!

 This is actually happening?

My God, you take your time with videos, woman. :teresa:

That said, I would like to see what sort of artistic direction she takes with the rest of the videos for this era, considering Rolling In The Deep's was different and the sort of thing I like seeing her doing in videos.

That is, assuming we get any more. Set Fire To The Rain video now due out on 21/12/2012.

We'll get the video to SFTTR if it is released properly in the US I think. Shame she / the label is snubbing the UK market completely that way. I feel it as a bit of... disrespect?
tbh any old songs going back into the charts is fine by me - especially if they're better than the majority of the top 40  but seriously, even though the performance was probably bad (I haven't actually seen it yet) the fact was it got the exposure it needed and 26 is a terrible peak for such a classic, this is far more reflective of it's popularity, see also Hallelujah (Buckley) and Cannonball

Iris' top version is still increasing - Maroon 5 have dropped from about 85% earlier to about 82% now. :o Hopefully they can keep up the lead for the rest of the week but I'm sure they'll start to slip before long.

Update on top 10 with combined top 100 versions (all pop bars rounded to 1 decimal place):

1. 100.0% Goo Goo Dolls - Iris [100.0% + 4.9%]

2. 86.4% Sak Noel - Loca People [68.8% + 16.3% + 5.5%]

3. 78.4% Maroon 5 feat. Christina Aguilera - Moves Like Jagger [82.2%]

4. 67.1% Dappy - No Regrets [70.4%]

5. 54.6% James Morrison - I Won't Let You Go [45.6% + 11.7%]

6. 52.9% One Direction - What Makes You Beautiful [55.5%]

7. 50.0% Jason Derülo - It Girl [52.5%]

8. 37.5% Bad Meets Evil feat. Bruno Mars - Lighters [39.3%]

9. 34.4% Pixie Lott - All About Tonight [36.0%]

10. 33.8% Olly Murs feat. Rizzle Kicks - Heart Skips A Beat [35.4%]

I'm suddenly not as convinced any more that Maroon 5 are out of the running for #1 this week. I still think they're the least likely #1 of the three contenders though. Should become clearer in a couple of days.

And good to see them picking a decent James Morrison song to reduce (although Broken Strings has been put back down to 59p as well and is ahead of YGMS, grrr). Also great to see Cupid's Chokehold / Breakfast In America back.
