UK Midweek Chart update: Noel Gallagher outselling Matt Cardle's album by 2-1

Tuesday October 18, 2011

Source: MW

By Paul Williams

Noel Gallagher is on course to kick off his career as a solo artist with a UK number one album after starting the week by outselling Matt Cardle’s own newly-issued debut album by two copies to one.

Gallagher, who topped the albums chart eight times with Oasis, has already this week achieved nearly 55,000 sales of his Sour Marsh-issued album Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, according to today's Official Charts Company Midweek figures, with Columbia/Syco act Matt Cardle in a distant second place with Letters.

However, Cardle is significantly ahead of Steps whose Sony album The Ultimate Collection topped the chart last Sunday but is now in third position in the week so far. XL act Adele’s ever-present 21 is down a place to fourth, Asylum/Atlantic’s Ed Sheeran drops 2-5 with +, while Virgin’s Kay Perry claims one of the big chart stories of the week with sales of her album Teenage Dream more than doubling after she performed the track The One That Got Away on The X Factor. As a result the album, which was 27 on last Sunday’s chart, is now sixth, while the single is the 16th top seller in the week so far.

DMG TV’s Daniel O’Connell is a few hundred sales short currently of the Top 10 with his newly-issued The Ultimate Collection, which is showing up as a new entry at 11. Other acts set to debut on the chart this coming weekend include Naïve’s M83, Capitol/Parlopone’s Jane’s Addiction and UMTV’s Boyz II Men.

On the singles chart Island’s The Wanted are presently in the lead with newly-released Lightning as they seek their third number one. However, it is only a few thousand sales ahead of Def Jam/Mercury’s Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris hit We Found Love, which spent a second week at number one last Sunday.

Sales of Peacefrog signing Charlene Soraia’s cover of The Calling hit Wherever You Will Go have nearly doubled on the week to move it 7-3, while RCA act Kelly Clarkson’s new single Mr Know It All appears as a new entry at four. The Calling’s own version of Wherever You Will Go, which reached number three on the UK singles chart in 2001, is also continuing to prosper after moving 57-25 last week. It is now 13th in the new chart week.

Just behind Soraia, the bid to top the chart by A&M/Octone’s Maroon 5 featuring Christina Aguilera’ single Moves Like Jagger now looks to be over as it drops 2-5 in the week so far. Below it in sixth place as a new entry is the Stranger label’s Lana Del Rey with Video Games.

Other new entries to the chart this coming Sunday will include singles from Mercury’s Justin Bieber, Virgin’s Katy Perry and Atlantic’s Sean Paul (featuring Alexis Jordan). Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds single AKA What A Life, which reached number 20 last month, is now subject to a chart revival following its physical release. Having been 55 on last week’s chart, it is currently sitting in 21st place.

UK Midweek Chart Update: Rihanna moves ahead of The Wanted

11:28 | Thursday October 20, 2011

By Paul Williams

Rihanna featuring Calvin Harris’s We Found Love has edged ahead of The Wanted in the UK midweek singles chart after the boy band had taken an early lead.

The Global Talent/Island act looked like they could be on for their third UK number one single after leading the market up to the close of business on Tuesday, but Def Jam/Mercury’s Rihanna/Harris is now back in charge having spent its second week at number one last Sunday.

However, there is little more than 1,000 sales separating the tracks, according to Official Charts Company data, so either release could claim top honours once the final chart is published this coming Sunday.

The Sour Marsh-handled Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds album continues to lead the artist albums market with Columbia/Syco act Matt Cardle’s Letters second, while DMG TV’s Daniel O’Donnell has now progressed into the Top 10 positions with The Ultimate Collection having been in 11th place on the midweeks published on Tuesday.

Meanwhile, the Stone Roses’ self-titled first album has arrived in the Top 75 following the announcement on Tuesday the band were reforming for a tour. The Silvertone/Columbia album is presently the 59th biggest-selling artist album of the week.

Daniel O'Donnell has a new album out? What's the occasion? It isn't Mothers' Day or Christmas :o
Hope Kelly gets a top 10, she hasn't been receiving much airplay :(

Official chart twitter

Noel Gallagher has started the week in the lead in his race for Number 1 with Matt Cardle, one of the first big chart battles of the autumn.

After two days sales have been counted (up to midnight last night),Gallagher’s new album 'High Flying Birds' has a significant lead over Matt’s 'Letters' release in their chase for top spot in the Official Albums Chart – 55,000 sales vs 28,000 sales.

But the former Oasis man was always expected to get an early fan-base driven kick of sales. And, with supermarket sales unlikely to make a big impact until later in the week, Cardle is likely to narrow that gap over the coming days.

The rivalry between the two albums has been built up over the past couple of weeks, with Gallagher revealing that he had turned down an offer from Simon Cowell to be a judge on X Factor and criticising the show’s decision to allow 16-year-old singers to compete.

Thanks for the info, nothing from MW as yet :(

Blimey there's a lot of guests viewing in, must be the entire DS X Factor forum eager to know Matt Cardle's sales, I did see buzzjack mentioned, and I don't mean his fans, they are going to be so disappointed if there isn't a whiff of sales figures

Daniel O Donnell eh, that would be somewhat hilarious if it's above Matt.

Edit: Ah there we have it, cracking first day sales for Noel, already outstripping last weeks total, but that was to be expected!

Edited by PurpleNurples

Why are members surprised that Daniel O'Donnell has an album out. He has released an album most years at this time for the last thirty years as well as around valentines or mothers day. He is very prolific.

I wouldnt joke neither as he may not be that far away from Matt Cardle position wise today.

They always leave it too late to releases x factor winners albums and also think any opld crap will do.

I bought Matts cd yesterday and played it. Wasnt that struck on it really. Maybe it will grow on me

Does anyone know Joe mcelderry's first weeks sales for his x factor album please ?
Excellent sales for Noel and decent for Matt too. I imagine Noel will be more frontloaded and Matt will benefit more from the supermarket purchase throughout the week. I think Matt can get somewhere around 75k and Noel will be about 110-120k.
Does anyone know Joe mcelderry's first weeks sales for his x factor album please ?

Yes it was just under 40k from what I remember and midweeks was about 26k

I'm interested in Lana Del Ray's sales, last time I checked she was number 12 in the itunes singles charts but also number 4 in the itunes album charts, I guess that means people buying the whole ep rather then just the one track, will the sales be combined?
