00s - Arcade Fire - Funeral

90s - Radiohead - OK Computer

80s - The Smiths - The Queen is Dead

70s - Pink Floyd - Dark Side of the Moon

60s - The Beatles - Revolver

These are not my choices. I posit that these could all be considered the most critically acclaimed albums of each decade. Which would you dispute? Which would you not? Which have you not heard in full?

'Funeral' is my least favourite of Arcade Fire's albums. Controversial. (It's not bad but I prefer 'Neon Bible' and 'The Suburbs').

Of the other 4 the only one I've heard (I don't really listen to old albums) is The Queen Is Dead, as my mum is a massive fan of The Smiths. I wouldn't dispute that one, it's probably the best 80s album of the few I've listened to.

I'd say that's a pretty good starting point. It's interesting that three of those choices (Funeral, Dark Side and OK Computer) are much more than just a collection of songs. They all need to be heard in their entirety and in the right order.

And Bré, you really do need to listen to Dark Side Of The Moon. For the reason given above, you won't find it on Spotify etc.

Dark Side Of The Moon is DULL AS.

And there was me about to say how I approved of your name change

I prefer the tone of "Neon Bible" but find "Funeral" works better as a whole, "The Suburbs" beats both in terms of scope and ambition even if at 16 tracks it's a bit filler-y at times. What redeems said filler is often that it has a strange and slightly pretentious name (not a dig at "Sprawl II (Mountains Beyond Mountains) btw cos it's truly amazing) which convinces you it's an essential part of the album.

Certain schools would put "Kid A" ahead of "Funeral". The same schools would also have already given Kanye West the title of Best Album of the Decade for the '10s.

Glad you approve! :D

Sorry but it is a dull listen, I bought it and was thoroughly underwhelmed. :(

I love that Dandy has to JUSTIFY his name change in his sig.

Well I don't want to have to continuously explain it so it seemed most sensible. :D

I think the fact that I QUITE ENJOY Dark Side Of The Moon rather proves Dandy's point, alas :(

I remain, years on, thoroughly INDIFFERENT to all things Radiohead. Absolutely bleak.

Evidence that would SURELY stand up in court.

And Shoat, really? Not even 'No Surprises'? I thought all the blandies liked that one!

Don't be daft. It's a great album.

I won't dispute OK Computer is highly rated but for the life of me I can't see why. 5 great tracks and some boring crap.

And I would argue that Revolver should be dumped for The Velvet Underground & Nico

Oh and Dandy* > Dandhi. However , Mahatma Dandhi...

Evidence that would SURELY stand up in court.

Oh I can tolerate No Surprises, as I also can High And Dry and Karma Police. I could also put up with Creep although I prefer the Scala version.

But nevertheless, I would never class them as all-time favourites, as pretty much every music critic or alternative-kid in the country seems to.

I generally go with 6 great tracks and some interesting other songs. But the 6 great tracks are sublime.

Never rated The Queen is Dead particularly, but I'm not even going to try to come up with an alternative to it! (certainly not T** S**** R**** which is good but vastly overrated and is probably on the tip of many tongues)

The 70s was such a transitional decade that it's difficult to think of 'Dark Side of the Moon' (73) and 'London Calling' (79) as being from the same time period. But I'd go for the latter as it's probably the best album ever made.

I'd say Spiritualized's 'Ladies and Gentlemen' massively eclipses 'Ok Computer' - and did so when they were released on the same day (!) - and would certainly put that ahead of it.

That I haven't gone back to 'Funeral' in several years but still can't think of a mainstream competitor to it from a whole decade just shows how bad the 00s were for albums that enjoyed big sales and critical acclaim.

I'M TOO MAINSTREAM GAY FOR THIS LIST, TBH.
