It is supposed to be the radio station for the nation's youth aged between 15-29. The age of the average Radio 1 listener is actually 32, according to research, up from 29 three years ago. The audience for the breakfast show presented by 37-year-old Chris Moyles is even older, an average age of 33. Have R1 lost the plot and the youth audience have gone elsewhere to KISS, Capital or Choice. Is R1 trying too hard to force Indie music down peoples throats rather than pop music.

Capital is definitely more for the youth now, than Radio 1. It seems to be growing and growing and considering their playlists, it's easy to see why the youth choose Capital over Radio 1 now. Also, the fact that whenever I turn Radio 1 on, they only ever seem to talk!
But radio 1 get FAR more listeners than capital overall?!
Yet whenever I listen to Radio 1 (not that often, I admit), it's content seems to be aimed more and more at 12-16 year olds rather than adults. The Chart Show being the biggest case in point.
I do find that a bit surprising to be honest, I thought it would be younger, although I guess Capital has taken a bigger market share over the last year now it's not loads of individual stations. And whenever I listen to radio, I really don't see that they play any less music than other stations, more talking probably, but then other stations have adverts, and talking over adverts every time. Yes Moyles waffles on but so does every breakfast DJ in the country. Breakfast shows don't seem to like playing music.
Is it not just the case that younger people no longer listen to radio at all or as much, and that the people who grew up listening to radio are still listening and slowly getting older?
Teens Award, Festival Coverage, The Chart Show - all of it seems aimed at ~16-20yr olds. Perhaps the average listener has gone up because more adults are listening to it during peak times (i.e. Chris Moyles + Scott Mills) - so it brings the average up.
Capital is boring and repetitive, I much prefer Radio 1

Capital is basically the same 4 generic pop songs on rotation. Turn on Capital and it's either Pitbull, Gaga, The Wanted or LMFAO. Real boring stuff. I def prefer Radio 1.

Exactly what i was thinking, at least radio 1 supports artists like the Vaccines, Skrillex and the Arctic Monkeys

That suggests they are getting no new listeners, just the existing ones are remaining.

29 + 3 = 32

Well, the maths check out.

Also, they have far too much indie support.

Do you know what they should do instead of it. Play more songs that a few years ago people played on Capital. Hits from the 2000s, you know? And less talk. Why don't radio 1 drop most of the talking? Most kids are so commercialised, they'd probably rather listen to the latest advert for Bieber tickets than hear Chris Moyles talk about Sausages.

Besides, Chris Moyles himself is 37. I don't think that he's really a youthful presenter that could connect with the kids anyway.

This is kind of a fail at establishing a point marrb. You seem to be the only person who has a bone to pick with Radio 1. Still bitter over your beloved Alexandra Burke not making the playlist?
Radio 1 plays indie music?????????

Yes, it does.

I listen to both Radio 1 and Capital. And other stations too. Choice FM is definitely the best for people my age, if you look at the music they play.

I am a bit surprised the average age of Radio 1 listeners is so high. I mean, I just can't imagine people in their early 30's listening to Pixie Lott, Tinie Tempah and The Saturdays, if you know what I mean. But evidently they do listen to that.

Heart FM is the worst big radio staton though, and it is much more reptitive than Capital. Although all the major radio stations are repetitive I think. Like on Radio 1, I keep hearing We Found Love and Sexy and I Know It, on Capital I keep hearing The A Team and Set Fire to the Rain, on Heart I keep hearing Empire State of Mind and Bad Romance, on Choice I keep hearing Motivation and Down On Me, and so on.

The charts moving so slowly this year is probably something to do with that though. Especially with the top 40 stations that try and reflect the charts. The top 1000 airplay countdown for the decade showed this, how songs are getting so much more overplayed in the past few years than they used to.

I did not write the original article it is in all the newspapers and based on facts. There have been many R1 threads and this is the first one I have done. There is no excuse for not playlisting a song once it becomes popular. It just shows that they would rather be stubborn than cater to a wider audience. :P

To be fair, I'm not sure if Radio 1 are supposed to cater to a wider audience. I mean, I believe it's required of them that they play a certain amount of certain genres every day, and that they support a certain amount of new artists, so I think they'd rather serve their purpose as a radio station than play bigger hits to draw in a bigger audience (and there's no point in them playing "all the hits", because Capital does that much better, so people who want to hear "all the hits" will listen to Capital).

The same with Capital. They might want to support new artists, but that's not really their purpose, so they shouldn't do it (and there's no point in them doing it a bit anyway, because Radio 1 does it better. People who want to listen to upcoming artists will listen to Radio 1).

I agree though. Less talking on Radio 1 would be nice. Most of the time I change stations from Radio 1 it's because they've been talking for like 5 minutes, and are showing no signs of stopping.
