A small idea 'borrowed' from the OCC facebook, I will make one post per day until the 24 showing a mix of the years #1 singles and albums and the biggest sellers (I am not here Fridays so expect 2 posts on Saturdays) to celebrate all things 2011 and Christmas.

Feel free to comment once the days Advent has been posted :D

Rihanna feat. Drake - What's My Name?

http://www.chartstats.com/image/r49685_100.jpg

The first new #1 of 2011 for just the 1 week knocked Matt Cardle off the #1 spot and held him at #2. The second #1 from Loud, the album it helped reach #1 the same week. I personally reckon this one of Rihanna's best songs and after her X Factor final performance it was a well deserved chart topper. Oh na na, what's my name?

Chart run: 18-10-8-4-2-2-2-1-3-7-9-15-19-20-20-26-32-42-45-46-49-61-66-65-73-70R-61 (27 wks)

Sales: 341,000 in 2011 (768,00 total)

Still the best #1 of the year so far, definitely!

Still the second best #1 of the year for me (after 'Stay Awake' - Rihanna's other #1, Example's other #1 and Promises (by the producers of 'Stay Awake') complete my top 5 favourite #1s of the year )

Rihanna is generally a bit hit-and-miss for me but her best songs (What's My Name?, We Found Love, Don't Stop The Music to name three) are FANTASTIC.

I assume you're not just going to post one song/album per day? There's been far more than 24 #1 singles/albums this year (you could JUST ABOUT get away with doing one a day for just albums as 'Talk That Talk' was the 23rd #1 album of the year).

God, looking at the list of #1 albums, if '21' had returned to #1 on James Morrison's second week we would have had sixteen weeks in a row each with a different #1 album, expanding to 17 this week assuming Olly Murs makes it and quite possibly extending to 18 next week assuming Amy Winehouse makes it! :drama:

Actually that would have been quite cool if that happened as Amy Winehouse would have both started and ended the streak.

Actually no, I will do one post per day (well, 2 tomorrow as off to work now) and it will be either a #1 single, #1 album or huge seller from the year.

What an awful chorus. I do like the subtle orchestral nature of the music.
Great idea... can you give Adele a miss ^_^
I still don't get "What's My Name". The rap in it is amateurish at best, with just a couple of random lines from Rihanna repeated several times.

Those 'couple of random lines' are the chorus, of course they're going to be repeated. The song has verses as well...

Bruno Mars - Grenade

Bruno Mars' third chart topper, Grenade was originally released in October 2010 but shot straight to #1 when re-released in January, selling 150,00+ in its first week. Kept a rather good song (see below) off #1 too. I don't mind a bit of Bruno but he sometimes verges on Jack Johnston territory which is unforgivable. Thankfully, this does not.

Chart run: {1}-1-2-2-4-7-7-9-10-13-17-21-21-18-27-33-36-43-44-45-53-54-61-59-67-68-72-69-63R (29 wks)

Adele - Rolling In The Deep

http://www.chartstats.com/image/r49871_100.jpg

Annoyingly kept off #1 (see the culprit above) but a 7 week US Billboard #1. Utterly captivating song and a strong comeback setting us up for the delights of '21'.

Chart run: 2-3-4-5-4-4-5-9-8-9-15-16-16-22-26-27-33-34-26-31-37-41-44-45-43-47-36-51-44-45-50-52-49-40-50-54-55-56-51-55-69-62-68 (43 wks)

Sales: 771,200 (approx)

Grenade was originally released in October 2010?

According to the OCC it was (on their FB).

Presumably it was available to cherry pick from the album when it was released in October 2010 (in the US)? I can only assume that's what they are referring to...
I'm still very glad Grenade kept Rolling In The Deep off the top :D [/unpopularopinion]

Likewise, it was nice to have a two week #1 so early in the year.

Grenade gets too much hate, it's Bruno's best single (aside from It Will Rain). Lyrics are rather amazing.

Rolling In The Deep is of course incredible also. Loved that top 2. Actually, as I recall, that was one of the best weeks in the top 40 overall this year. (Nostalgia a bit, but still)

Rihanna feat Drake - What's My Name?

I wasn't crazy over it when it first came out, but it has grown on me slightly now it's hardly on the radio. I'm still glad it was another number one for Rihanna though! :D

Bruno Mars - Grenade

Thought it was a great follow-up to Just the Way You Are, and I'm glad it got to number one, although I would have MUCH prefered it to be released on a different week to Adele, as I think Rolling in the Deep was and still is a much better song

Adele - Rolling in the Deep

One of my favourite Adele songs! So nice to see her do a more up-tempo song! It's one of very few songs that were released at the beginning of the year that I still love!
