I actually think that The Saturdays' signature hit is What About Us.

I hate how people are so precious with their definitions as well. Like it or not, Heart Attack is Demi Lovato's signature hit because it is going to be the biggest selling song of her career.

That's not their signature hit, that's just their hit. Singular.

How are we defining 'signature hit' anyway?

For me, it is the one song that instantly springs to mind whenever you hear the artist's name.

Yes, I'd say so. For Jacko I disagree with the opening post and think maybe Billie Jean?

As for the Beatles, for me they fall into the same category as the likes of Elvis Presley, Abba, Michael Jackson etc where if you ask 100 people you'd probably get at least 8 different answers

I doubt you'd get a lot of different answers for Abba. I think most would say Dancing Queen or Mamma Mia.

I would say 'signature hit' only applies to artists who have built up a portfolio of hits with no massively obvious standout in terms of sales/chart run.

I mean, lets be honest, what OTHER songs would anyone remember from Fun., PSY or Carly Rae Jepsen in a few years? I'm not saying they are one hit wonders, but its very obvious what they're one huge song was...its too easy to call it their 'signature' song.

There seems to be a bit of confusion here. I would say 'signature hit' can only applies to artists who have built up a portfolio of hits with no massively obvious standout in terms of sales/chart run.

Agreed. It's mainly for artists/groups with many hits.

Well, a signature song is someone's most well known song, so I fail to see how that argument works.

Chris Brown - With You

No way. I can't really think of a signature hit for him but it's probably one of his F.A.M.E singles.

No one is being "precious" with their definitions - there is a definition for the term "signature hit" whether you like it or not. Demi Lovato definitely does not have a signature hit (yet) and signature hit doesn't necessarily equate to biggest-selling hit.

Nearly every example Lee gave is not a signature hit. The only ones I'd say are signature hits are 'Gangnam Style' and 'I Gotta Feeling'.

Also, as I've said, The Saturdays are an act that definitely don't have a signature hit.

Well I think the poster above meant that it's a bit daft asking for an artist's signature song if they've had just two hits, a huge No.1 and a lesser hit. The answer is a no brainer really!!

I think you should revisit the second/third page where someone gave a great definition of what a "signature hit" is. It's not just an artist's most well known song.

I'd go with Buck Rogers for Feeer, but Ash I'd say Burn Baby Burn is better remembered that GFM.

Ash's signature hit has to be 'Shining Light'. It won a recent poll on Radio Ulster as NI's favourite track.

I think of a signature hit as being the one people (in every day public terms) would mention as the first thing being associated with the act.

Obviously it sounds silly unless you're applying the term to someone who at least has a reasonable portfolio of single releases as well as being an established name.

But how do you draw the line between signature hit and only hit? Take Daniel Powter, you could call Bad Day his signature track, but what other hits has he had that could possibly be classed as contending? its not a signature hit, its his only hit.

and its not often that I refer to the opus that is Wikipedia, but this is its opening lines for 'signature song':

" A signature song is the one song (or, in some cases, one of a few songs) that a popular and well-established singer or band is most closely identified with or best known for, even if they have had success with a variety of songs "

Signature tracks from some of Buzzjack's most cherished artists:

Sweet - Blockbuster!

T Rex - Get It On (Bang a Gong)

Slade - Merry Xmas Everyone/Cum on Feel the Noize

AC/DC - Back in Black

Metallica - Enter Sandman

Iron Maiden - Run to the Hills

The Smiths - This Charming Man

Exactly. It's not that it's technically incorrect to say to say that 'We Are Young' is Fun's signature hit or that Psy's signature hit is 'Gangnam Style', it's just that it's so extremely obvious that it doesn't need to be stated

I was thinking the other day about what Girls Aloud's signature hit is. Personally I would actually lean towards it being 'Call the Shots', even though it wasn't their biggest seller.

I'd also still say that Rihanna's signature hit in the long run will be 'Umbrella', even though 'We Found Love' outsold it by such a big margin.

I agree with the people who say there isn't really an obvious answer for Madonna. I guess her most iconic "moment" was Like a Virgin, because of the imagery, but in terms purely of the songs themselves I kind of think it's 'Like a Prayer'.

For me, I think 'Sound of the Underground' and 'The Promise' are more iconic than 'Call the Shots'. 'Sound of the Underground' was completely different to any other winner's single at the time and reaches out to people outside of Girls Aloud's fan base - I know a few people who dislike "chart music" but still think 'Sound of the Underground' is good. As for 'The Promise', it was big at a time which for me was when Girls Aloud were at the height of their fame and there was a huge buzz about that song.

I definitely agree about 'Umbrella', in fact I think 'Only Girl (In the World)' is closer to being a signature hit than 'We Found Love'.

On the subject of Madonna's signature hit, may I not at all plug a thread about it in the Madonna AF...
