It certainly wouldn't have. They really didn't kick on until Somebody Told Me was re-released at the beginning of 2005, that was when they went from middling indie band to being absolutely massive. Although the album entered at 6 it didn't appear in the top 15 again for another 6 months when STM and January Sales took it all the way to the top. In reality they weren't a great deal bigger than what say, The Vaccines are now.

True, although I would have expected "Mr. Brightside" to at least re-enter the top 40 in January following the success of "Somebody Told Me".

Another one, Bruce Springsteen's Born To Run (probably his best-known song or certainly up there) only made #16 and was in the chart for 4 weeks.

That was only a live version as well!

Had the charts been download back then it could have had an insane chart run, probably 10+ weeks in the top 10 as its reputation grew. We saw how "Chasing Cars" bounced back up when the chart rules were relaxed and it was six months old at the time.

Mr. Brightside charted once in the download chart in 2004 and 2005 - at No. 40 - following Live 8 in July 2005. However, only a top 40 was compiled back then, so it may well have been among the top 100 downloads constantly in that time. In 2006, the download chart was extended to a top 200 for a short while, and it remained a near constant fixture in the top 200 for most of that year, going as high as No. 93 in October 2006.

That's interesting given they only performed "All These Things That I've Done" at Live 8, I'm guessing that would have been far higher up.

The Black Keys - Lonely boy seems to have been stuck between 76 and 100 for weeks without charting....
01/12/1990 LL Cool J Around The Way Girl/Mama Said 41 {41}-44-65-66->4

Odd to think 'Ain't Nobody' was a definitive non #1 in 1997, and whilst 'Control Myself' was a #2 hit in 2006, I certainly haven't heard this song since...well, 2006. :heehee: However, 'Mama Said (Knock You Out)' is by far LL Cool J's most famous single but is one of his lowest selling singles in the UK.

You can pretty much fill this thread with early hip hop singles, to be fair, as the UK had a, at best, niche market for rap (except crap like Vanilla Ice which none of the hip hop audience took seriously) until at least the late 1990s. Other examples: It Was A Good Day, Protect Ya Neck, Nuthin' but a 'G' Thang, Don't Believe The Hype, Express Yourself, etc.

Fantastic song, "Tighten Up" is probably slightly more likely to become a classic IMO and that didn't chart at all.

Oh, did they? I didn't realise. I just assumed it entered because of Live 8 because it was the download chart the week directly after that, and the fact that there were quite a few singles re-entering because of it that week.

All These Things That I've Done didn't chart in the download top 40 that week, no, but unusually Somebody Told Me did as well at No. 28. Perhaps it was another reason then?

This has been 'Lonely Boy's chart run; 94-x-x-x-86-80-87-x-x-92-95-97

Interestingly the follow up entered at 83 this week!

Lonely Boy climbed back to #95 this week - making it eight weeks top 100 without ever going higher than #80.

OhMyGosh Junior Senior! I LOVED Move Ya Feet.
Van Morrison's classic Brown Eyed Girl also failed to chart. His album Astral Weeks is regularly voted among the best of all time yet also failed to spend a single week in the chart.
Chart runs and peaking high isn't always needed to have a song that will be remembered for years to come. Marcus Collins looks like he will outpeak the original but will his version be remembered in 6 months time??

Seven Nation Army spent 3 weeks in the top 40 (7-14-34-out)

Here was the top 10 at the time it debuted

01 [**] Busted 'You Said No'

02 [**] Lisa Maffia 'All Over'

03 [**] David Sneddon 'Don't Let Go'

04 [01] Room 5 'Make Luv'

05 [03] 50 Cent 'In Da Club'

06 [**] DMX 'X Gon Give It To Ya'

07 [**] The White Stripes 'Seven Nation Army'

08 [**] Triple Eight 'Knock Out'

09 [06] Junior Senior 'Move Ya Feet'

10 [07] Kym Marsh 'Cry'

Out of that I only know Room 5, 50 Cent, White Stripes and Junior Senior. I love all those songs too, especially Room 5 and 50 Cent!

What other songs can you think of have shocking chart runs but are well remembered. 'Smells Like Teen Spirit' and 'Mr Brightside' come to mind (the latter has spent forever in the top 200 but only 3 weeks T40 :o)

You don't know You Said No? :( Though I guess I grew up with Busted... :P

I can't access the chart runs ATM, but Beautiful Day by U2 had a really bad non number 1 style chart run, which isn't really indicative of its status now, in fact I'm pretty sure the same can be said for most of U2's classics...

Beautiful Day: 1-3-14-25-38-44-50-62-65-74-73-58-43-52-58-73

Vertigo: 1-7-13-22-22-23-24-27-30-43-53-65

So yeah, pretty poor. The latter was download no.1 for eight weeks though so it's probably sold a fair bit more than it's said to have officially.

Van Morrison's classic Brown Eyed Girl also failed to chart. His album Astral Weeks is regularly voted among the best of all time yet also failed to spend a single week in the chart.

I was going to mention this but seeing it not listed on Polyhex, I was thinking 'Brown Eyed Girl' was just an album track that became popular.

The amount of airplay Vertigo got (I didn't really follow the charts then), I thought it was #1 for an age!

No, it was a single. It's just that not many people bought it.

Astral Weeks did spend 3 weeks in the top 100 in 2009 - in the form of 'Astral Weeks - Live At The Hollywood Bowl'. Perhaps one of the only albums for which a live version charted higher?

Not related to this but Kym Marsh - Cry

Absolutely LOATHE the woman (Michelle Connor can FOAD, no-one wants you in bloody Coronation Street!) but love that song, had totally forgotten all about it!

YESSSS! I thought I was alone in loving 'Cry' It's beautiful.
