The 'Part of Me' video is released on Wednesday too - so that could give it another boost, perhaps so far to ensure a second week at #1 - which I'd actually like to see - one-weekers are just extremely irritating (see the album chart).

I don't know why people get bothered about songs/albums only making #1 for one week. A #1 is awarded because you've sold the most in that week. I find it much more interesting when there's proper battles for #1 and lots of different types of songs are reaching the top spot. Long running #1's are pretty boring, imo.
I'd rather have teeth pulled without anaesthetic.

Seriously though, you've no doubt wondered why I'm *so* anti-rap. Well this song illustrates one of the reasons why - it lay out the issues, but fail to mention that (IMO) the people he's supposedly speaking on behalf of, are a major part of the problem. If they want change, they'll have to change themselves, too...

What makes you say that?

And for the last time, please stop referring to rap like it's a genre. Either refer to the vocal style of rapping or the genre of hip-hop, because your use of the word "rap" makes me want to pull MY teeth out without anaesthetic.

Rap is a better term to define a genre than hip-hop.

Ill Manors (NO to iLL Manors) is a rather great song and I would be pleased to see it hit #1 but I wonder how many people who buy it will actually "get" it.

Well, I was hoping that an honest explanation of why I don't like it, would get me a few brownie points... perhaps a forlorn hope, it would seem.

OK then : to clarify matters - in whatever context I use the term 'rap', I am referring to the vocal styling, rather than the hip-hip genre.

So now you know, and there's no longer a reason to get on my case when you perceive I'm using the term 'incorrectly'.

I prefer a mix of the two, that way it's less predictable and in general, the biggest songs spend the longest time at #1. One weekend can help to highlight fanbase buys and lower selling/more frontheavy #1's. In know Roll Deep made 3 weeks #1 and then plummeted, and charity singles can do this too, but there's always gonna be blips, and that's where I think chart runs are clearly more reflective...

I guess that depends on whether lyrics, or other aspects of a song are what attract you to it. In my case, lyrics are usually well down the list.

That's been the case ever since I started listening to music - it was a while before I twigged what Madness's 'House Of Fun' was really about...

Sounds to me like a confused piece with lots of random lyrical images placed one after the other.

Shame really as I loved his breakthrough album

Well it's not, as it's not the name of the genre. Any genre could have rapping in it. Is this hip-hop?

The fact that you're clearly taking the piss is reason enough.

I WAS *NOT* TAKING THE PISS!

If you are not prepared to accept an honest opinion, than I'm afraid that's your problem, not mine.

Calm down, bloody hell. I'll just assume it was an honest typo then. And your reasoning behind your opinion is still crap.

Well it's not, as it's not the name of the genre. Any genre could have rapping in it. Is this hip-hop

"Rap" is the name of a genre. There is of course cross over with other genres, such as Hip-Hop, Metal or even comedy.

Just because you don't recognise it as a genre, doesn't mean that it isn't one. The first dictionary definition of genre I found was "category of artistic composition, as in music or literature, marked by a distinctive style, form, or content:" Rap certainly qualifies to me.

Isn't it RAP MUSIC instead of just RAP? I'm not quite sure myself :::

Rap is not a genre of music, it's a style of vocals. The genre of music most associated with rap is hip-hop but rap can be present in just about any genre, save possibly classical.

I'm quite interested to know what 'rap literature' is?

vidcapper, regarding your point about the song not acknowledging that these people are part of the problem - as far as I'm aware the whole point of the song is to highlight that they're not all of the problem and the middle/upper classes need to accept some of the blame for the riots happening. I don't think he's trying to say it's entirely their fault and he's certainly not condoning the actions of rioters etc.

-x-

Anyway, I think if Plan B can't get #1 next week (and I don't think he will) then it'll just be Katy for a second week, especially as she's #1 at the moment without a video and the video will be premiering during the week.

 21. The Swarm - You Me At Six

This is doing really well, even if it plummets over the week I'd say it's fairly locked on to be a fourth top 40 hit for them and it definitely has a good chance of outpeaking 'Finders Keepers' and it could even become their first top 20 hit if it can keep this up :o

 25. Shake It Out - Florence + The Machine

 Really hope this returns to thetop 40 this week.

 36. Go In, Go Hard - Angel

I heard this once a few weeks back - quite decent, really surprised at how well it's doing though with only INMWT-list support from Radio 1!

Dub poetry most closely relates to 'rap' as we understand it i think.

I certainly can't imagine Katherine Jenkins having a featured rapper on her next album.

I guess, as usual, everyone interprets lyrics how they see it. :)

i just think that a long runner at the top shows quality and cultural impact of a song which is deeper and better remembered than just a marketed(insert appropriate fanbase boy/girl group in here from any teenage generation) no1 which is here today gone tomorrow!

Fair enough - I have no problem with people disagreeing with me, I only get upset when I'm falsely accused.

In any case, I don't think Plan B is saying anything a lot different from what the Sex Pistols were, in my day. Ironocally, that was *before* Thatcher became PM!

I just realised how old that makes me sound!
