To be fair in completely different time periods to sell anywhere near 20million and to be breaking the records she is breaking right now is undeniably impressive and an incredible achievement. The fact that illegal downloading is so much more common and easily accessible now then ever before cant be ignored.

But so is buying music? It's also far cheaper than it ever was before.

Congratulations to Adele, and what an album too.

Like we haven't heard you say that before. And to be frank, sales now are not so poor that an album selling 20 million (and topping out at a maximum of 30) is as good an achievement as an album selling 70 million back in the '80s. Like Mark said the price you're paying for "21", even before it's discounted, is relatively speaking a fraction of the price most people will have paid for "Thriller".

Still, I'll save my rants for when she makes #4. Despite all your congratulatory fluff, I don't think even you could pretend "21" is as culturally significant as "Morning Glory" - at least "Thriller" is a worldwide phenomenon that never quite achieved the same heights here that it did elsewhere.

Couldn't agree more!

This news has been inevitable for some time. I think this would be a pretty bad idea, it'd surely create backlash. I hope they don't decide to do this. (Or if they do I just hope it works and she does overtake Queen :P)

They might have to do it, now. The 'News' is spreading, & a lot of people

may not buy the current version. They may hold off for a 'New' version,

that never gets released.....

I don't think it would do any good to re-release '21'; it was a part of her life that is now over and to go and re-write all over that would just seem pointless and certainly cause outrage among her fans (although I understand her record company won't view it this way). I think the best step forward would be to try and release a new album as quickly as possibly to make the most of all the Adele hype that is unlikely to die down any time soon.. This is almost certain to increase 21s sales somewhat - although obviously not as dramatically as 19 was. Eventually 21 will end up near the top of that list so to try and speed it up would cause more aggravation than benefit.

Swedish superstars ABBA have further underlined their position as musical legends, with their Gold album becoming only the third 5-million-seller in UK chart history. According to latest Official Charts Company sales data, the quartet’s Gold - Greatest Hits has passed the 5 million mark in the past week.

The achievement puts the album alongside alongside Queen’s Greatest Hits and The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band as one of only three albums to reach such an elevated sales level.

ABBA founder / songwriter /musician / legend Bjorn Ulvaeus told OfficialCharts.com: "I can’t think of a club I’d rather join!”

Gold - Greatest Hits marks 20 years since its initial release this October, having racked up eight weeks at Number 1 since it was first released in 1992. ABBA are one of the all-time great singles artists, having racked up nine Number 1s and another 10 Top 10s in the UK’s Official Singles Chart, since their debut hit Waterloo in 1974.

Official Charts Company managing director Martin Talbot added, “This is another incredible record in a career of extraordinary achievements for ABBA, who are unquestionably one of British music fans’ all-time favourite acts. Over the past 20 years, one in every five households has bought a copy of Gold, which is a truly remarkable statistic.

“ABBA are true chart superstars here in the UK – and this latest record adds to their legendary status.”

ABBA’s landmark has been reached after Adele’s 21 broke into the all-time UK Official Albums Chart Top 5 for the first time last month, behind Oasis’s What’s The Story Morning Glory. The two albums are among a list of five other albums to have sold more than 4m copies in the UK, the others being Pink Floyd's The Dark Side Of The Moon, Dire Straits’ Brothers In Arms and Michael Jackson’s Thriller.

ABBA Gold is just 46,000 copies behind The Beatles’ Sgt. Pepper's.

I think Adele will have some trouble overtaking Gold for a while, although she should pass Oasis soon.

I thought 21 was meant to be a personal album to her - re-releasing it would just kill all of that completely...

Hopefully this re-release is just a rumour, Adele has said that she's against the idea of re-releasing '21' although I suppose it's XL's decision that matters more than hers in this scenario. I don't think Adele is ever likely to overtake ABBA as they continue to sell a decent amount each week (their choice top 100 ever-present seems to now be '18 Hits' for some reason though) and Adele is probably nearing the end of her doing 10k+ per week although of course there's always the possibility of further boosts for '21' in the future. If she does ever reach the top 3 of that list she'll be overtaking The Beatles, not ABBA.

The full update:

According to the Official Charts Company’s sales data, Adele’s 21 has overtaken Oasis’ (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? to become the UK’s fourth biggest selling album of all-time.

2012 has been an amazing year for Adele: The last twelve months have seen the London born singer pen the theme song to the latest James Bond film, Skyfall, and her record-breaking second album, 21, eclipse the all-time sales of Michael Jackson’s iconic albums Thriller and Bad, and overtake sales of legendary records by Pink Floyd (The Dark Side Of The Moon) and Dire Straits (Brothers In Arms) in the UK.

Now, as the year draws to a close, Adele can add another achievement to her impressive musical CV – overtaking Oasis’ (What’s The Story) Morning Glory? to become the UK’s fourth biggest selling album of all-time.

According to the Official Charts Company’s latest sales data, Oasis’ 1995 second album has sold 4,555,000 copies to date, while Adele’s 21 has surged ahead with sales of over 4,562,000 copies. The news comes just over a year since 21 overtook Amy Winehouse’s Back To Black to become the UK's biggest selling album of the 21st Century.

21, which was released in January 2011, has spent 101 weeks in the Official Albums Chart Top 75, including 95 weeks in the Top 40, 75 weeks in the Top 10 and 23 weeks at Number 1. It has sold 784,000 so far this year, making it the second biggest selling album of 2012 so far (behind Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events).

The UK's Official Top 5 Biggest Selling Albums Of All-Time are as follows:

1 GREATEST HITS QUEEN 1981 5,866,000

2 SGT PEPPER'S LONELY HEARTS CLUB BAND THE BEATLES 1967 5,059,000

3 GOLD - GREATEST HITS ABBA 1992 5,046,000

4 21 ADELE 2011 4,562,000

5 WHAT'S THE STORY MORNING GLORY OASIS 1995 4,555,000

Why anyone is STILL buying this exceedingly average depressing album is beyond me.

Further things we can see from this list!

Since March 2012 the increases have been

1- QUEEN- 2K

2- THE BEATLES- 14K

3- ABBA- 54K

4- ADELE- 413K

ABBA Gold looks like the most likely candidate to be the all time best seller the way it's selling.
21 is one of the best albums ever so I'm glad at the success it's getting!
I think i'm the only one who doesn't *get* Adele. Sure, 'Rolling In The Deep' and 'Set Fire To The Rain' were pretty good songs and she's a good singer but I can't help but think she released at the perfect time and because the media were obsessed with her. The album isn't that good, imo.
21 should never have overtaken Back to Black - let alone Thriller. :(

Depressing isn't it. I've said many times before the UK public love "average". I've seen that live performance at the BRITS many times and there is absolutely nothing vocally special about it. It seems getting dumped and crying shifts units lol. Add to all that how her voice grates on me and I just don't get how she's sold so much (expect for the saturation in airplay around that time which was ridiculous)

I think because she's so ordinary people relate to her, a bit like Olly Murs (the both benefit from being girl/boy next door and people thinking they can be like them) Adele can sing adequately though, although as I said her voice is not for me. The amount of people I've heard saying how she doesn't look like a pop star and look how well she's doing etc, it's like she proves some kind of point.

Queen's Greatest Hits selling only 2k from March to December? Pfft, yeah right! I'm sure it was Top 200 a couple of weeks back.
