Bad Girl must have been lucky to scrape a top 10 placing.

Would live to know how TAB sold weekly to compare it! Her first single to miss the top 10!

I guess there was just an awkward transition period with moving on from the 12"/7" to cd singles that caused it?

Regarding her 80s and mostly early 90s chart runs, I wonder why those singles would grow in sales for 2 or 3 weeks, rather than peak in week 1? I noticed that was the case with Kylie's singles from that era too. Yet by the late 90s and 00s the first week was generally the peak/highest sales achieved (which makes me wonder what caused that shift to singles having a more instantaneous chart impact)

^ all singles used to take a few weeks to peak in 80’s / early 90’s

Shows like TOTP (used to have a big impact on sales)

Maybe changes in the way songs were promoted too? Maybe in the 80s there was less promo in the lead up to release in comparison to the several weeks of promotion ahead of release later in the 90 and the 00s.

'The Immaculate Collection' re-enters at #95 on the album chart. 2022 chart run as follows:

RE: 196-117-142-152-164-161-157-149-148-137-145-139-127-136-130-125-106-125-124-129-122-133-121-115-110-106-119-113-95 (fifty fifth entry: 06/01/22) 29w

Also re-enters at #80 on the album streaming chart.

Not too sure about the 80s as I was a bit young but it was almost impossible then to chart initially high…. may have had something to do with sales reporting and just general marketing and promo…there were far fewer tv stations so it was all about radio play and TV performances. They also used to release 7 inch and 12 inch singles at different times.

CD started being the preferred format in around 94 they used to release CD1 and CD2 in subsequent weeks (I guess following the 12 inch model).

It was 1995/1996 that CD sales really improved and then they released all formats in one hit inc cassingle for 99p…that was when acts entering at number 1 became the norm along with the pre release promo being much stronger. They also used to come with free gifts like art cards etc….Madonna’s You’ll See had a gorgeous calendar inc. Happy days.

This isn't entirely true. Madonna consistently charted high from 1985 onwards. Into The Groove entered at #4 and was #1 a week later. True Blue entered at #3 and was #1 a week later Like A Prayer entered at 2 and was #1 a week later. And from late 1984 onwards, Madonna did no UK tv either for many years. From '84 onwards it was nearly impossible to debut at #1 for many years, so madonna debuting so high, was an indication of how hot she was.

I was going to ask this a while back but forgot.

How is it The Immaculate Collection what regularly charts out of her compilation albums but not Celebration when Celebration contains material over a wider span of her career? Is it just because her earlier hits are streamed more in general? It’s just something what intrigued me like with Britney for example her second Greatest Hits album is the one what charts here. Was just curious.

I guess now with Finally Enough Love that may now be the one what charts who knows

It used to be the case that the most bought compilation of the week received the main bulk of the streams, which is why 'The Immaculate Collection' and 'Celebration' used to alternate in the charts, but at some point I think it changed so that record companies could choose which compilation got the streams. The streams have now been allocated to 'Finally Enough Love' so presumably it'll linger in and out of the Top 100 for some time.

‘Rain’ enters the download singles chart at #71 and sales singles chart at #79. You Can Dance is #35 on the download album chart after one day of sales.
Just realised looking at the top post that JML could have been a likely number 1 if not released at Xmas!
