women hating other women confuses me

It's the whole ''I don't think a woman is CAPABLE'' thing. Not just of being president, but women routinely hold beliefs that other women aren't as good in leadership roles. It's rather baffling and another sign that even if we are beginning to turn the tide on these things, it's going to take generations to truly undo all the ingrained damage that has been done.

SHE DID WIN

THIS IS WHAT HURTS THE MOST

THIS IS ENTIRELY THE PRODUCT OF A FUCKED ELECTORAL SYSTEM

CNN are projecting when all the votes are in Trump will be winning the popular vote too but regardless the argument doesn't really make a lot of sense as the candidates based their campaigns on the system and target the battleground states. Trump didn't bother with California and New York for example as he knew it was pointless. They both would have targeted differently if it was one person one vote and the result cannot be predicted.

But with each candidate still getting equal time to campaign you could model that the vote numbers would be the same no matter where they did choose to campaign, if the system was more proportional then the only difference is that they'd choose to campaign in different states. It is the broken system that allows minority rule that is the problem, what the candidates do with it is irrelevant.
Why does it feel like it's safer in here, Russia, right now than in America. That's f***ed up.

I'm not necessarily against a proportional system here or there but I think the electoral college is pretty fair. California gets twice as many "points" as any other state for example and you could also argue that a President could be elected by winning relatively few states. Hillary got 85 electoral votes just for California and New York. The map actually favours Democrats. We all discussed how Trumps path was much harder. I'm just not sure the minority rule argument is relevant here as it looks like Trump will end up with more votes anyway and even at this point the difference is so small.

I think they underestimated him and neglected their heartlands (Wisconsin and Michigan only visited at the last minute) he targeted them and won.

As well as at least three times the population for those states that it does have more than double electoral college votes. There's a greater disparity as you go down the list, down to comparing it against Wyoming it's got 70 times the population against 18 times the electoral votes. The map cannot favour Democrats when so many of the small states given extra power by that sort of thing are Republican strongholds. Trump's path was only seeming harder because it was considered that what turned out to be the Rust Belt thorn in the side was safely Clinton - as you say.

I don't understand why, when in so many states the numbers are likely to be 40-60 or closer, that they still use winner takes all for everything. It is an awful system.

It would be interesting to see the effect of proportionally spliting the electoral college votes of a state by the popular vote. Like Maine/Nebraska splitting by congressional district but less open to gerrymandering and more a direct representation of who people voted.

You'd probably find that electoral candidates start spending more time on national issues instead of a disproportionate amount of time on issues that matter to Florida and Ohio.

Obama apparently 'very encouraged' after the meeting he had with Trump today. I get the feeling he isn't going to be quite as bad as being made out, although I'm probably being too simplistic.

Yes I realise its has a bigger population but at least the states do get proportioned in some way. Its worse here. I know they are re-doing the boundaries so its fairer but still.

Fairer...... more like gerrymandering to break Labour seats in such a way that creates more Tory seats

save kiev

Unfortunately I think you're being a trifle optimistic. This is the man who was calling Barrack for everything - even saying he was the root of Isis. I think his pleasantries with the President was just a two-faced act.

Besides - if Trump doesn't follow through on all of his vile promises the more rabid element of his supporters will be gunning for him - literally.

The new president once described his daughter as "a nice piece of ass"

Let that sink in.............

This is just like a bad dream.

I am still really upset.

But we need to hold onto this anger and upset and remember it for the future.

This for me is the worst election result I HAVE EVER LIVED THROUGH, if not EVER. Cameron x2 was nothing for me compared to this. That barely registered a reaction. This however!!!

Donald Trump will be the "David Moyes" of American politics, that I have no doubt about.

forces of intolerance, guess what, create intolerance and let thick bully bigots run riot.

This is the human race. Anyone who has survived mob mentality and bullying and aggression and callousness and cowardice at speaking out to do what's right in school should have an idea what the human race is really like. People, sorry to tell you, don't change as they get older, they just get better at disguising their shittier qualities until someone gives them a free hand to let them run riot again.

The forces of fairness and democracy have always had an uphill battle, and that will never change until the day mankind decides they can genetically remove racism, aggression and selfishness. So, never.

Still, Merry Christmas Everyone!
