There was a discussion on one of the Radio 1 Playlist threads about Robbie not being relevant to younger listeners and about Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw's comments, and today there was an article on Digital Spy which continues with the matter:

Neil Fox calls Nick Grimshaw a "total nob" for Robbie Williams comment

Published Tuesday, Nov 6 2012, 11:15 GMT, by Mayer Nissim

Neil Fox has taken issue with Nick Grimshaw's comments about Robbie Williams.

Radio 1 Breakfast Show host Grimshaw said that the Take That star is "not relevant" to his younger listeners.

"Brainless @grimmers @R1Breakfast claims @robbiewilliams is too old & irrelevant for today's teenagers! Some advice.. Stop being a total nob," said Magic FM veteran DJ Dr Fox on Twitter.

"Scary how many people seem to agree with my thought re@grimmers being a #totalnob over his @robbiewilliams comments! It's true though."

He continued: "While I'm having a rant, much as like @onedirection for what they are, if they're the new saviours of @bbcr1 can I have my license fee back?

"Of course I'm not the voice of Today's youth-or trying to be-but @grimmers comments are purely to get a headline."

Fox added to RadioToday: "I'm not the voice of youth but Radio 1 are crazy for saying they're not playing his new song. He'll still be popular when One Direction have split up.

"I know [controller of Radio 1] Ben Cooper - he used to produce my Drive show on Magic - but he needs to work out if Radio 1 is a pop station or not."

He added: "I don't know Nick - I'm sure he's a nice guy but it will be interesting to see how long he lasts now his honeymoon period is over."

Williams has said that he does not mind about Grimshaw's comments, but added that the station should not play Madonna or Coldplay records either if they are only trying to appeal to young listeners.

Robbie does realise Radio 1 doesn't play Madonna too! :P

That's a bit of a bold statement, is it not? I can see One Direction becoming the new Take That in the near future.

B-)

You realise that it should take 4 1D albums to sell as much as TT's last one though?

In my opinion One Direction could either last until album no3 or continue for a few more years with little success (this could easily break them appart which brings us back to the 1st scenario). Appart from their musical (inexistent imo) talent it may be difficult to keep these boys together as well. Plus they will be too grown up for 12 year olds just like Justin Bieber will be. Could they switch repertoire at that point? I think nobody will care either way...

Madonna gets some random hits every now and then and she is a lot older (and more irrelevant to the UK audience) than Robbie. Even if his sales shrink after 10 years or so he will still have at least as much success. Legends do not die away. Even if they physicaly do their songs rechart

But One Direction are more successful than Take That were at this stage...

But in fairness Take That were one of the first UK boybands for a long time and did not have the XF exposure to kick start their career! TT were smashing it by the time of their 2nd album!

Take That:

Albums:

Take That & Party [2x Platinum]

Everything Changes [4x Platinum]

Singles:

Promises #38

Once You've Tasted Love #47

It Only Takes A Minute Girl #7

I Found Heaven #15

A Million Love Songs #7

Could It Be Magic #3 [silver]

Why Can't I Wake Up With You #2 [silver]

Pray #1 [Gold]

Relight My Fire #1 [silver]

Babe #1 [Platinum]

Everything Changes #1 [silver]

Love Ain't Here Anymore #3 [silver]

But then One Direction have done something Take That never managed, conquer the world. Their biggest fanbase is in America and TT never broke the states.

Grimmy has said this feud with Robbie was made up by the press, if this is the case Neil Fox will look really stupid with his rant.

This bit is a bit odd - like I previously mentioned, BBC Radio 1 don't play Madonna anyway (although funnily enough they couldn't get enough of her in the Hard Candy era when she was still over 50) and Coldplay *does* appeal to younger listeners. :P

Anyone who thinks One Direction will last more than a few more years must surely not be paying enough attention? Even if they do have the willpower to stick at it like Westlife, they'll go down the JLS route and fail to be as popular each time round. They may be getting bigger right now, but it won't last forever.

Robbie, on the other hand, only needs a decent single every now and then to keep him going. That's what's worked for him for at least the last 10 years.

And Candy is relevant to the youth for they are buying it. It's not for some suits at Radio 1 to decide what is or what isn't relevant. Chances are they'll playlist every Robbie track from now on like they did with Maroon 5.

I can see One Direction becoming the new Take That in the near future.[/size]

hahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha ok hahahahaha

Robbie is 39 and not "Madonna's age" to start with. Grim HAS a problem with Robbie, or at least pretends to it is obvious, how can you fail to see it? "I have never listened to any of his songs but I like him"; it is Grims words. I believe Robbie DOES appeal to younger listeners, at least the people I know are in their twenties and a lot of the like his songs (as do Coldplay, definitely not 1D). It is ridiculous to assume the audience pick songs because of the artists' age, but even if you do Robbie is not even 40 yet  .

As for 1D being the next TT, it is not happening in terms of UK success, not even if they last for 10 or 12 albums everybody can see why. Considering even TT broke appart at some point I do no see how 1D could continue that long. It is a 2nd rare thing in a row that Robbie and then TT (as 4) came back with great success which makes the whole scenario even more unlikely for 1D. In terms of music, TT and Robbie have managed to do some teenage pop and then switch to a different style, I cannot see how 1D could do that leap considering they are mostly puppets... As far as the US success is concerned, Cyrus has done WAY more than them but she will be forgotten (if she isn't already) quite fast. Disney-ish acts trageting 12 year olds come and go very fast. I do not really see 1D's amazing start honestly: JLS must have outsold them (in the UK) in terms of everything and they are experiencing the XF aftershock (as does Leona). 1D's fist album was nowhere near a huge success if you compare it with Olly, JLS, Leona, Alexandra's first albums etc.

One Direction have raised the game with "Little Things".

Take That had organic growth & a very small marketing budget, 2 men's vision.

They got more popular until the end.

1D had everything, instantly, Cowell owns the world now.

It's called having an opinion.

The thing radio 1 won't acknowledge, is that while their mandate is to broadcast for younger listeners, the average age of their audience is actually 30 - so fully hallf of their audience will remember Take That/Robbie right from the beginning...

What..?

I think you must have totally misunderstood my point, I was basically saying that the examples Robbie gave weren't the best to choose from. I didn't ever say Nick Grimshaw doesn't have a problem with Robbie, and I *do* think Robbie appeals to younger audiences - the fact he was number one for two weeks with incredibly high first week sales must show that!

I'm sorry but Foxy's right, whatever you say about Robbie he's just had one of the biggest number one singles of the year and an album to match. One Direction might be fashion of the month now and have a number 1 album this week as a result of that but that's all they are. They're not in it for the music as it stands anyway.
^^i agree we will have to wait to see how their career pans out to see if they want to move away from the under 21 fanbase, if they dont theyll be gone in 4 years like all those pop bands. Robbie will hopefully still be releasing albums at xmas for years to come like rod stewart(good example of a pop start from the late 60s still top 5 in the albums this year). Rod could have one of the biggest selling xmas albums this year by the looks of promo etc!

Yes! I agree with you. Robbie Williams could become an Elton John figure in 20 years time...

Double post.
