January 14, 201312 yr Author Are they crashing down the prices tomorrow? I don't want everything to be gone by the time i get there on the weekend! There may not be a 'closing down sale' as the majority of stock in stores HMV do not own meaning that suppliers once a company enters administration can request the stock back.
January 14, 201312 yr Author Very odd that the HMV website has no mention of the administration - Makes me think that this might still continue to trade? The statement said most of the company and assets would be placed into administration - HMV.com has always operated separately from the retail stores in that items bought online can't be returned to store, gift cards bought in store can't be used online etc, so its possible they might keep the website trading and just put the stores into administration which would lead nicely to a management buy out minus the debt and 100+ under performing stores... January 14, 201312 yr Oh, i didin't realise you worked at HMV! But anyway, I fear for the sales of albums/Dvd's without HMV. I think it will only be a couple of thousand to get to number one now! Edited January 14, 201312 yr by WALL-E
January 14, 201312 yr I assume I will find you buying all the copies of The Saturdays and Pixie Lott in HMV Dundee tomorrow? May bump into you as I stock up on Mutya/Sugababes and any DVDs I can get my hands on!
January 15, 201312 yr Author So if the majority of HMV stores are holding the same amount of James Arthur and The Justice Collective CD singles as the one i work at then expect around 65k in physical sales for each if they get sold off at 10p!

I'll go in town tomorrow and purchase a couple of DVD'S. Edited January 15, 201312 yr by WALL-E
January 15, 201312 yr Gutting news for so many reasons. Hadn't even thought about Pure HMV, luckily I redeemed what I had just before Xmas with a Q Magazine subscription but still, it was a really good incentive scheme.

And the best thing about it, is that they won't be chart elegable as at 10p their too cheap :P
January 15, 201312 yr Author And the best thing about it, is that they won't be chart elegable as at 10p their too cheap :P They will - As the supplier cost won't have changed just the retail cost, Alexandra Burke got sold for around 20p in the Woolworths closing down sale and all the copies counted towards the chart.
January 15, 201312 yr And the best thing about it, is that they won't be chart elegable as at 10p their too cheap :P It's the price the retailer (in this case HMV) paid that counts, not the selling price. Therefore, if they do flog off surplus Justice Collec tive singles at 10, it could make a surprise return to the chart
January 15, 201312 yr Nah, I only have On Your Radar, Chasing Lights and Turn it Up, don't really buy albums physically. I'll go in town tomorrow and purchase a couple of DVD'S. I'll be there bright and early to beat the masses and score the good shit. Don't want to be left with the crap they couldn't pay me to take out the store.

Therefore, if they do flog off surplus Justice Collec tive singles at 10, it could make a surprise return to the chart  Oh gosh  I thought singles had to be sold at a minimum of 59p to be eligible to chart.

That's certainly the smart way to go about it. Cut the deadweight while keeping the strong brand name.
January 15, 201312 yr As others have said, it's a real shame that HMV is closing. It's only the high street shop that I consistently go into when I go into town and it's quite sad to think that will be the last modern CD shop to go. All it's going to cause is mass unemployment, a big drop in album sales and a gap in the market that will not be filled for a long time. However, the prices in HMV were extortionate for reasons that I mentioned a few weeks ago in this thread. And when you think of it like that, you do think that they have brought it on themselves. Does anyone know if HMV is going to be open on Saturday? I might get some stuff while it's open...
January 15, 201312 yr Shame :( The high street is going to be nothing but pound shops and take aways from now on. Don't forget Supermarkets... :P
January 15, 201312 yr Author Work is going to be hell today - It's all over the TV and newspapers this morning so everyone with a voucher or faulty item will be in and then the bargain hunters expecting a 75% off sale today!
January 15, 201312 yr Am I the only one who thinks it's possible they'll find a buyer? Seeing as there will be no competition from other music retailers, imo it's clearly salvageable if someone actually can come up with a plan -- I mean, CD album sales are still strong (relatively), it's just people get them from supermarkets instead these days. But if someone can buy it who can actually come up with a good long-term plan, there's potential imo, it's just HMV the last few years hasn't had the money (and/or creative thinking) to stop this death spiral. If there isn't a buyer, will be a very sad day for the music industry. Nobody is going to invest in a business that is selling a product that is guaranteed to decline in sales year after year. There is no way back for physical formats. The sales are going to keep going down and down.
January 15, 201312 yr Author Just to confirm no gift cards, vouchers or Pure HMV credit will be accepted - Also no refunds or returns.

The sales are going to keep going down and down. they actually can if they stop online piracy and illegal downloads which killed the music industry in the first place... so yrs the physical format can.be saved but they're not doing anything to save it...
January 15, 201312 yr such a shame to see retailers that I grew up with and have been a solid part of the high street for such a long time now go into decline. But this is the problem, so many management know how to run the day to day operations of a company and say the right things but have no idea how to move it forward. HMV was left behind by the move online, there business model does not stand up to online competition as you have no need to go into the store to touch the CD/ DVD/ Game/ Console as you can get these online and its not like clothes where often you need to try them on, with HMV products they are commoditised and will fit; you know what to expect. With anything like this, if you dont accept and embrace the change your business will suffer and inevitably fold. I dont see a problem with everything going digital as long as its a fair playing ground and new music as well as X Factor releases are able to find their own space.
