I hope it gets bought. It's odd how HMV has remained open for a couple of months after it went into administration. I'm sure that Woolworths closed down a few days after administration was anounced.

Hopefully Deloitte will pull their finger out and get it sold to Asda or Hilco instead of closing it down completely. This has gone on for far too long, I don't understand whats taking so long if there are buyers interested, they must have had some genuine offers.

Woolies was clearly a lost cause with little hope of any buyer coming in. By contrast there are a lot of potential buyers for HMV so the administrators are keeping the business going.

I believe that there's two indie stores in Derry (one is called Cool Disks, I believe), but apart from that, it's incredibly Belfast-centric. Which is grand for me, but not for my brethren elsewhere in the north.

Checking to see if there are any local stores particpating in RSD13 it lists Head (Belfast), Cool Discs (Derry) and Carlin Records (Newry).

The HMV in the Trocadero - where I used to spend *hours* in along with the long-gone Tower Records/Virgin Megastore/Zavvi down the road, is looking pretty bare now. Almost all CDs and DVDs 50% off at least.

This includes about twenty copies of, wait for it, Helping Haiti's 'Everybody Hurts' Was £4.99, now just £2.50 to buy an outdated charity single that's 99p on iTunes!

It's with sadness that I saw my local store in Swindon has now closed it's doors. Is it one of the first to go, or have other stores now closed too?
My local HMV (Staines) was meant to be closing, and had a closing down sale on a few weeks ago when I went in, but I went there yesterday and whilst there still being a few reductions on some things, there were NONE on CDs anymore, and they had loads of new stock in. :o No closing down signs were up anymore - has there been any announcement of any stores no longer closing? Or is this just wishful thinking on my part?

Blockbuster to move into music as part of revival plan

by Tom Pakinkis

Blockbuster’s new owners are planning to move the High Street entertainment brand into the world of music - with former HMV commercial director Gary Warren appointed to lead the business.

Speaking to Retail Week, the chief executive of restructuring firm, Gordon Brothers Europe, Frank Morton said that the store would also expand into related categories including accessories such as headphones.

Gary Warren is to fill the role of Blockbuster managing director.

While he recognised that both DVDs and music are in decline as far as physical product is concerned, Morton called it “a predictable decline. It doesn’t just shut off like a faucet shuts off.”

He added that Blockbuster would not more into the online streaming space. “Right now we have no plans to develop a digital offer. We continue to work with [Dish - former Blockbuster parent which controls the digital rights of the brand in the US] on that,” he said.

“We have an online presence, but our focus is on the retail offer. It is a sector in transition, no doubt about it, but there are still customers going into stores, around two million I think.”

The Gordon Brothers Europe boss also said that he believed all 264 Blockbusters stores acquired in the deal to be profitable “assuming we can have a dialogue with landlords”.

Watford branch has definitely gone.

The Cheltenham branch was still open as of Monday, but I know it is definitely closing at some point.

Picking up on this - I went in today and there were two big identical signs behind the tills saying "we're here to stay" and that the store is now staying open! :cheer:

indeed as MW reported today, quite a few stores that were meant to be closing are now not, partly due to landlords offering a better deal. The big one in Manchester city centre is also not closing now.

Interesting. I wonder who's bought HMV. There's still been no news, unless it's all under wraps.

A week or two ago, my HMV in Scarborough was shut - no signs, just the big metal gate thing pulled down. Hopefully that's one which is actually staying, since it was always heaving whenever I went in.
It also looks like both Princes St and Ocean Terminal in Edinburgh are both surviving the cull.

According to this article on DS Hilco could be confirmed today as the buyer of HMV as early today. :D http://www.digitalspy.co.uk/music/news/a47...-2500-jobs.html

Edit: The BBC say the deal has gone through. Hilco have purchased 132 HMV stores & 9 Fopp stores from Delotte http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/business-22040237 :w00t: :cheer: :yahoo:

So happy this has finally been sorted :D

Mines staying open. :yahoo: Thank goodness. Sometimes they have some good offers on catalogue albums.
Both stores in Leeds are staying - that's surprising! :o They may move the Headrow store to be inside the Trinity centre soon though.
