December 17, 201213 yr Author Hillsborough single takes 'critical lead' in Christmas No.1 race Source: MW by Tom Pakinkis Hillsborough charity single He Ain't Heavy, He's My Brother has taken a “critical lead” over James Arthur’s Impossible, according to the Official Charts Company, in what it describes as “the tightest ever battle for the Official Christmas Number 1.” The Guy Chambers produced Justice Collective Hillsborough charity single - featuring Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, Rebecca Ferguson and Melanie C among others - was originally trailing The X Factor 2012 winner's single, based on the first three days of sales data. Yesterday, James Arthur's Impossible was just over 3,000 sales ahead of He Ain't Heavy… (based on sales to midnight on Monday), but this morning the positions have flipped, with The Justice Collective’s track taking a 3,400 sales lead (based on sales up until midnight last night). He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother has sold over 109,700 copies so far this week, against Impossible’s sales of 106,300. "This really is the closest No.1 battle we can remember - even closer than the legendary 2009 battle between Rage Against The Machine and Joe McElderry,” said Official Charts Company MD Martin Talbot. “The poll concludes at midnight on Saturday night (December 22), so there is a long way to go yet - but this one looks like going down to the wire." In 2009, Rage Against The Machine's Killing In The Name and Joe McElderry's The Climb were never closer than 8,000 sales from each other, with RATM extending their final lead to almost 52,000 by the end of the week - 503,000 to 451,000. The Official Christmas Number 1 will be revealed on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show with Reggie Yates and on www.officialcharts.com this Sunday (December 23). According to the Official Charts Company’s latest sales data, The Justice Collective’s cover of He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother has increased its lead over James Arthur’s Impossible after its first four days on sale. The all-star group, who are raising funds and awareness for the ongoing legal battle of the families of the Hillsborough tragedy, started the week trailing the X Factor winner by 3,000 copies. Yesterday (Wednesday, December 20) The Justice Collective surged ahead of James Arthur by 3,400, and today they have extended their lead to 14,000 copies with sales of 146,000 vs Arthur’s 132,000. This year’s battle is not as clear-cut as the race to the 2011 Christmas Number 1. Last year The Military Wives and Gareth Malone’s Wherever You Are surged ahead of then X Factor winners Little Mix’s Cannonball by 186,000 copies midweek, with these early sales putting them firmly on course to their place at the top of the Official Christmas Singles Chart. However, this year’s race to Number 1 is expected to go right down to the wire, with fans of both acts battling it out to Saturday evening’s midnight cut off point. The Official Charts Company’s Managing Director, Martin Talbot said "This is the closest Number 1 battle we can remember,” he added that "it is even closer than 2009 battle between Rage Against The Machine and Joe McElderry." The Official Christmas Number 1 will be revealed on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show with Reggie Yates and the full Top 100 will be posted on www.officialcharts.com this Sunday (December 23). In related news, after just 11 days James Arthur’s Impossible is now the seventh biggest selling debut single by an X Factor artist of all time. In a week and a half, it has overtaken the lifetime sales of Little Mix’s Cannonball (Number 10), 2007 winner Leon Jackson’s When You Believe (Number 9) and JLS’s Beat Again (Number 8) with sales of over 622,000. He now has his sights firmly set on overtaking One Direction’s debut single, What Makes You Beautiful (781,000). December 17, 201213 yr Author The Justice Collective’s Hillsborough tribute single leads the race to the 2012 Christmas Number 1 in the Official Charts Company’s final sales bulletin of the week. The race to the 2012 Christmas Number 1 remains finely balanced going into the weekend. In the Official Charts Company’s final sales bulletin of the week, The Justice Collective’s Hillsborough tribute single, He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother, maintains its lead over James Arthur’s Impossible for the third day running, having sold 23,000 copies more than the X Factor winner up to midnight last night (with five days of sales counted). The Official Charts Company’s managing director Martin Talbot says: “The momentum is in favour of the Justice Collective, who now have a decent lead, having sold around 15% more than James Arthur at this point. But they have opened up their lead in just two days – it could easily be closed over the next two days. “The Justice Collective are favourites right now – but their lead is not unbridgeable by any means. With two days of sales left to be counted, it is all to play for.” Approaching the final countdown Given the large sales volumes of the top two singles, other tracks which have been tipped as Christmas Number 1 contenders may now be out of the running. Psy’s mega-selling international smash, Gangnam Style, climbs one place to Number 8 today, while Gabrielle Aplin’s cover of The Power Of Love is down five places to Number 9. YouTube blogger Alex Day, who gate-crashed the Official Christmas Singles Chart Top 5 last year, is at Number 15 with Stupid Stupid. The Pogues FT Kirsty McColl’s Fairy Tale Of New York, which has re-entered the Official Christmas Singles Chart Top 20 every year for the past seven years, is at Number 18, while The One Pound Fish Man’s One Pound Fish song climbs 15 places to enter the Top 40 at Number 32. The Eddie Stobart Truckers also look set to enter the Official Singles Chart Top 40 on Sunday with their re-working of The 12 Days Of Christmas at Number 35. The Games Maker Choir and Alistair Griffin are just outside the Top 40 with I Wish For You The World at Number 53. Minecraft Christmas, Area 11’s festive tribute to cult video game, is at Number 60, and Robbie Williams’ Different is at Number 63. Williams, who is part of The Justice Collective, had asked fans to buy the Hillsborough tribute instead of his single when he realised release dates would clash. And finally, Katherine Crowe’s Smile looks set to hold onto a place in the Official Singles Chart Top 100 for a second week with Smile (Number 95). The mother-of-two from the Isle Of Man has been diagnosed with terminal breast cancer. Proceeds from the track will be used to help research new cancer treatments and help her family. The Official Christmas Number 1 will be revealed on BBC Radio 1’s Official Chart Show with Reggie Yates and the full Top 100 will be published on www.officialcharts.com this Sunday (December 23). December 17, 201213 yr It seems it is out of Michael Buble and Olly Murs for Christmas Number One in the albums, I think the former will get it. I think Michael Buble, Olly Murs, Bruno Mars, Emeli Sande, Rod Stewart, One Direction, and Rihanna will all sell 100k this week, possibly Neil Diamond and Robbie Williams.
December 18, 201213 yr Sales will be interesting in both charts this week. Did James sell 80k physicals last week - wonder if he's likely to increase or decrease from that this week because that could be the difference - also JC cd is only 2 quid - James' in 4 quid! TJC for no1 single and M.Buble for no1 album this week for me! Edited December 18, 201213 yr by steve201
December 18, 201213 yr I would think the Glee album wont do overly well, that bubble seems to have somewhat burst. I am hoping for mega sales this week, ideally all the top 10 albums selling 100,000 and over. Price could play a big factor in Justice Collective and James Arthur physical sales but i cant see the younger people purchasing Justice Collective and will instead opt for James Arthur. Additionally, James Arthur will be purchased for many Santa stockings this week. The top 40 albums could/should all sell over 20,000 this week. My hopes for Kylie Minogue to sell 30,000 onwards this week, Olly Murs to be the Christmas number 1 album and James Arthur the Christmas number 1 single.
December 18, 201213 yr I have a feeling Olly is going to bag the Christmas #1 album with Buble close behind, TJC will have huge sales but again i think will be beaten to the top by James one of the reasons being that TJC physical will have huge regional differences in sales [some places are sold out of the CD while in others its untouched], Also there does not seem to be much hype or media exposure about the song.
December 18, 201213 yr I am hoping we get some sales figures today for the top 2. James Arthur should be #1 on early midweek flashes but with how much of a lead is the real question!
December 18, 201213 yr James Arthur’s Impossible is officially leading an incredibly tight race to the 2012 Christmas Number 1, ahead of bookies’ favourite and Hillsborough tribute The Justice Collective’s He Ain’t Heavy, He’s My Brother. According to this morning’s Official Charts Company sales data, the X Factor winner’s track had sold nearly 76,000 copies this week, and is just over 3,000 copies ahead of The Justice Collective’s cover of The Hollies' 1969 classic. Comments the Official Charts Company’s Managing Director, Martin Talbot: “While James Arthur has an early lead over The Justice Collective after just two days of sales, it is exceptionally tight – especially with Christmas gift purchases likely to impact on both releases as the week progresses. It looks like being an extremely exciting race for this year’s Official Christmas Number 1.” James Arthur’s Impossible became the fastest selling single of 2012 and debuted at Number 1 on the Official Singles Chart on Sunday (December 16) with sales of over 490,000 copies. While The Justice Collective’s track features an all-star cast including Sir Paul McCartney, Robbie Williams, Rebecca Ferguson, Paloma Faith, Melanie C, Holly Johnson, Shane MacGowan, The Farm’s Peter Hooton, and Gerry And The Pacemakers’ Gerry Marsden, to name but a few. Both releases are donating their proceeds to charity with Arthur’s single raising money for children’s charity Together For Short Lives, and The Justice Collective are raising money for the ongoing legal costs of the families of the Hillsborough tragedy. December 18, 201213 yr Wow! Only 3,000 copies seperating it :o It looks like anything could happen! Great to see both selling as it's for charity but I'd prefer James to get the #1
December 18, 201213 yr 3k difference, though James would have had a bigger lead at this stage though i suppose that includes all the pre-order sales of TJC and their download is faltering now - its going to be close!
December 18, 201213 yr Both are piles of shite. Another rubbish christmas number one, keeping up with tradition I guess.
December 18, 201213 yr Hope to god Justive Collection is number one on sunday!! Love James Arthur, but I think the JFT96 deserves to be Christmas number one!!
December 18, 201213 yr Wow, extremely close race in the singles chart. And, where did that number of 100.000 pre-orders for TJC single come from. Well, it was wrong then. Looking forward to a real X-mas chart battle this week then.
December 18, 201213 yr It seems reasonable to suggest that physicals are in favour of TJC given that Arthur has been ahead of the JC by quite a big margin at times yesterday and had 24hrs of sales to make up on James Arthur. That it is within 3k of him I think would seem to suggest it could be No 1 tomorrow.
December 18, 201213 yr Wow, extremely close race in the singles chart. And, where did that number of 100.000 pre-orders for TJC single come from. Well, it was wrong then. Looking forward to a real X-mas chart battle this week then. You can pre-order a physical CD but it's not a sale until you go into the shop and collect it :D

Looking forward to a real X-mas chart battle this week then. 100k pre-orders is a sneaky thing, I bet it is pre-orders the physical has sold to HMV/supermarkets rather than hard sales over the tills. Still this midweek says to me TJC should have it, to make up basically a whole day in physicals sales means they should be more than making up the slight loss to James in downloads right now.
December 18, 201213 yr So i take it the media reports that over 100,000 copies of TJC being pre-ordered was rubbish then? Surely those sales would have been added to the first update?
