Posted January 1, 201313 yr Midweek Charts: Harris bids for No 1 return Source: MW by Paul Willams Calvin Harris is taking advantage of a New Year market lull as 18 Months battles to return to the top of the UK artist albums chart. In an extremely quiet week for new releases, as is typical for this time of year, Harris's Columbia album heads the Official Charts Company's latest midweek rankings with Virgin act Emeli Sande's Our Version Of Events little more than 700 sales behind. Harris topped the chart with 18 Months at the beginning of last November, while the album moved back up 12-7 on last Sunday's chart and is being helped by some competitive pricing, including going out at £7 in the HMV sale and £5.99 at iTunes. The album progresses as the cut Drinking From The Bottle featuring Tinie Tempah climbs 43-21 on the singles midweeks with weekly sales up 62%. A number of albums continue to benefit from an iTunes promotion offering 24 titles at £3.99 each and these include Columbia/Roc Nation act Rita Ora's Ora, which climbs 8-3 on Sales Flashes to sit behind Sande's album, which drops 1-2. Also making sharp movements upwards are Asylum/Atlantic act Ed Sheeran's + and Mercury act Jake Bugg's self-titled debut, which respectively progress 13-4 and 16-5. Bruno Mars' second Atlantic album Unorthodox Jukebox falls 5-6 in the week to date, while Def Jam/Mercury act Rihanna's Unapologetic drops 3-7 and One Direction's Syco-issued Take Me Home slides 6-8. Another discounted title, RCA act Paloma Faith's Fall To Grace, moves up 14-9 as Epic act Olly Murs' Right Place Right Time drops 2-10. Just outside the Top 10, The Lumineers' eponymous Decca album rallies 22-11. Most albums are experiencing double-digit sales falls this week with the few exceptions including some albums that are part of one or more New Year retail campaigns. These include Coldplay's Mylo Xyloto whose sales are up 5% to climb 37-18 in the midweeks and fellow Parlophone act David Guetta whose Nothing But The Beat lifts 52-26 with sales improving 6%. There are no brand new entries at all among the Top 100 artist albums in the week so far, while the singles market is also lacking new product with the highest arrival - Parlophone act Pet Shop Boys' Memory Of The Future - down in 69th place. X Factor winner James Arthur continues to control the market as he looks to secure a third week out of four at No 1. His Syco debut Impossible is currently around 3,400 sales in front with the Intercope/Polydor-issued Scream & Shout by will.i.am featuring Britney Spears holding at 2 and Island act PSY's Gangnam Style remaining at 3, while Bruno Mars' Atlantic track Locked Out Of Heaven climbs 6-4. Olly Murs' Epic track Troublemaker featuring Flo Rida slips 4-5, while Mercury act Taylor Swift's I Knew You Were Trouble is up 7-6 as Def Jam/Mercury's Rihanna climbs 8-7 with Diamonds. Virgin act Swedish House Mafia are aiming for a Top 10 return with Don't You Worry Child as it climbs 11-8 in the week so far, while Labirnth's Syco single Beneath Your Beautiful featuring Emeli Sande moves back up 10-9 to swap places with the Island-issued Candy by Robbie Williams. January 1, 201313 yr I actually find January an interesting time for albums. The January sales often throw up a couple of nice surprises occasionally, so it will be interesting to see who benefits from the sales the most etc. I'm expecting huge things for 'Ora' for some reason.

January 1, 201313 yr January is the time when i buy all the albums iv been meaning to get all year - I think iv bought more albums in the past 2 weeks than the whole of 2012 [ben Howard, Green Day, The Maccabees, Andy Burrows, Rita Ora, Alt - J, etc,] Sales for albums are not usually too bad in January and it can make them stabilise and set them up for the New Year.

January 2, 201313 yr Can't imagine the T10 sticking to that order come the end of the week, I'm afraid. Olly Murs down 2-10 is rather unlikely to happen, and should easily overtake the likes of Paloma Faith, Bruno Mars and Jake Bugg come the weekend. Fantastic to see so many T10 peaking albums returning to the T40, and Harris returning to #1 is great news - though I'm wishing if he does make it, it can be for several weeks; rather than the mess we had at the beginning of 2012.
