Are you as tired as I am of the *same old songs* being covered over & over again?

Would you like to see different, unused ones for a change?

They should ban Adele, Emeli Sande, Skinny Love, Iris and Fast Car from talent shows. Way too overused, we would like forgotten classics to return to the chart off the back of talent shows sometime.
I lose count of the amount of songs I hear after a whole and think 'oh I'd love this to have a boost, it would be perfect for *insert person on talent show*'. I actually like a lot of the 'talent show staples' (especially Skinny Love, This Woman's Work and Read All About It) but nobody wants to see another brick layer singing Iris or another single mum belting out an Adele song or another 'tragic' VT where somebody complains about their perfectly normal job with a Read All About It soundbed.

They should have a 'special request' show where viewers send in a selection of songs they'd like to be covered, and a viewer request selection be chosen at random.
Isn't this like the 3456th time that someone has moaned about this? Change the record...

That's precisely what we're advocating they do!

I do like the songs that are constantly covered, but I do agree that there needs to be a change and something else should get a chance to make the Top 40 again or perhaps for the first time. However, banning songs would be ridiculous and not something I would support at all.

These new songs don't need to be classics, I wouldn't mind hearing something reasonably unknown and see it receive a boost if it's good.

Yeah, I agree with everything that's been said here. Banning songs is a stupid idea, most of the songs who constantly receive boosts are brilliant songs anyway.

The Voice had contestants choosing what songs they wanted to use in the last round before the live shows - can't get much more variety than that, surely? Plus, I bet as soon as the sales are released on Monday, they will be someone saying "oh, I can't wait for Iris to get to 1 million sales". As long as they sing it well, I don't see the problem.

Wasn't Adele songs banned from being used to audition for X Factor last year. Let's hope they do the same with Emeli Sande this year.

I don't think they ever went ahead with it, but it was an idea that sprung up.

Believe it or not, there are other Emeli Sande songs than 'Read All About It (Part 3)' and 'Clown', ones which people claim as "boring" and whatnot. :P

It's *really* boring, but then they are essentially large-scale kareoke contests, so may as well continue with kareoke traditions and have the same songs sung all the time.

I don't really mind Read All About It (and Pt. III) being played on them, because of course I love them both - but I don't understand why they imply that the songs represent (when showing VTs, montages, etc) a "journey" of the contestants - that's not what the song means lyrically at all.

I'd much prefer it if the "artists" started having to use original songs. Then we'd not be comparing them to other people's versions, and they'd stand or fall on their own abilities.

(Yes, I know this probably would affect viewing figures, but it's my opinion anyway)

I do think the more the song gets performed, the less interest it garners from the public. I know Iris has re-entered three times due to this, but the most recent two have done a lot worse than the first time it was performed, it will likely miss the top 40 the next time it happens. Likewise Read All About It, gained interest at first, but it hasn't had as much a bigger boost than the first time it was used on public television. The likes of Chasing Cars & Fix You haven't entered the top 40 in years and they've both been used quite frequently...I like to think its a sign to whoever picks the songs that the public do want more original choices and won't just rush out and buy anything they're shown.

I think it's the same situation we have with Capital FM tbh. They're not going to play anything new because there's the risk that the audience might hate the song and tune out, etc. They've got all these songs which they know can maintain their audience, so they'll keep playing them, forever.

But being risk-averse is a dead-end strategy - 'nothing ventured, nothing gained'...
