But it now seems fairly obvious that that was solely due to it having a "featuring David Guetta" tag, rather than the song being at all popular. Very happy at it's bombing -- of all the super-generic "club bangers" that have infested the chart since 2010, 'Right Now' is quite possibly the laziest of them all.

I agree. And David Guetta didn't even produce the song, it was produced by Nicky Romero I think, which shows they just credited him for marketing purposes.

I think some of the laziest dance-pop songs came from 2008 though. Rihanna's own Disturbia is one of them. I think Right Now would've been huge back then. I hope she has no songs like this on her next album, since I'm fed up of them getting released as singles when she has so many better songs.

Absolutely massive lead for Avicii already! :o

What even!!! Looks like Avicii is definitely going to challenge for 200k+ :o Knew it was going to be massive but that's just ridiculous for a 2:30am lead.
This is all happening very fast. It's almost as if everyone has reached their peaks already. So incredibly pleased for Selena. Keep going!!
Demi got to number 8 by about 1.45AM. So obviously Selena's doing well, but she'll stall sooner, rather than later if Demi's chart performance was anything to go by. (Still gonna be a big hit though)

Avicii's lead already!? Fricking hell. 250k+? :o

Just because songs are female pop or dance doesn't automatically make them generic. (Obviously Right Now is, but Disturbia isnt ... fully awaiting a argument how it is with instrumental youtube links included and being compared to random songs that sound nothing like it).

What the...?? :I

WOW.

Aloe Blacc is going to get a #1 to his name, this is such a strange reality to comprehend.

Why he's already had a no2 with the classic I need a dollar!!

Disturbia is extremely generic. Yet again, people on Buzzjack thinks it's amazing since it's got an extravagant music video. Listen to the instrumental, it's EXTREMELY basic and infact very tacky! And actually was supposed to be Chris Brown song originally (and if it was, everybody would say it's generic dance-pop just like Forever which he also released in 2008 is considered to be).

I don't think all dance songs are generic. Jack by Breach for example, or Bang Bang by will.i.am, Lost & Not Found by Chase & Status, Get Lucky by Daft Punk. Those songs aren't generic, whilst Play Hard, Disturbia, The Other Side, etc. are.

I agree with him tbh. Never expected to see Aloe Blacc back in the charts, and especially not at #1!

Yeah truthfully neither did I i just think he's got an incredibly talented voice which is the best thing on wake me up

And prevents it from being another generic Avicci track!

I need a dollar IMO will be a classic and still played in 30 years, it will define recession hit Britain!!

I figured I should listen to the Avicii song since it's #1 on iTunes. It sounds like a country song in the verses. It's better than I Could be the One, since at least he tried something different in the verses, but the chorus not so much. This song was obviously made to be a radio hit, more than anything.

I got fed up of I Need a Dollar when it was out. It was on the radio SO much. I haven't heard it in ages though. I never associated it with the recession before.

'Disturbia' was not generic. Well I don't think it was, anyway. I think it started off the mainstream success of R&B/Dance crossover hits, tbh. That along with 'Forever', 'Closer' et al. I can't think of a song that it sounds like (and I'm sorry Eric, but I'm not trusting your comparisons :heehee: ). People say they can hear 'Like A G6' in that 'Jack' song so surely that's at least a little bit generic?
It just annoys me how people on here seem so quick to discredit any major female artist lately because it is cool? It comes across just as small minded as those who dont like male artists and comes across quite snobbish.

Yes, years ago and he was a one hit wonder.

I'm not complaining though, 'Wake Me Up' is thoroughly excellent.

I was the one who compared Jack to Like a G6 in that thread! Robin Thicke's next single I think has a Like A G6 sound to it as well, with those weird bass-y synths in the verses. A song isn't generic just because it sounds similar to one other song though. A song is generic if there's no weird melodies or sounds in it, hardly any percussion, just one synth-line, etc. Like when I listen to a song and it's so uneventful I can't remember any of it. There's some songs I don't like, like a lot of alternative songs for example, but at least I think "Oh that was weird", so I wouldn't call them generic.

I agree with your other point though. Around the time when Disturbia, Forever, etc. were out was when we started getting lots of pure dance-pop songs. Before then we had occasional ones (like SOS by Rihanna), or the R&B/dance hybrids from Timbaland in 2006/2007, etc. but I guess early 2008 was when it finally became dominant.

I absolutely love 'Wake Me Up'. It's probably one of my favourite songs of the year so far.

Snap not followed the charts for a few weeks but heard this today on MTV and loved it. Presumed it was about 4 in the charts this week then heard it loads tonight when I was out, so checked on here and seen it was dominating.

Fully deserved

People including myself always complain when record companies hold back releases for months in the UK but you can't blame them! Look at the response they get by holding tracks back - Avicci is going to challenge the 200k sales barrier and Selena and Avril are going to have bigger hits than they would have had they released months ago.
