INTRIGUED.

Only because it feels like pretty much everyone asks for opinions on what to send these days and so I kinda assume that half of the participants know what half of the tracks are before the semi final thread even goes up.

Does this not spoil the fun for y'all? And why don't you just decide what to send yourselves? (no sarcasm intended, genuinely intrigued)

To answer my own question, I think Hits is the only person who has ever asked for advice on entries from me and I've asked him previously also - although we haven't exchanged views in quite some time now. Primarily as I gave him rubbish advice. :D

Through asking/giving opinions I usually end up knowing about 5/6 entries and then I'd say the average for what I already know prior to the contest is about 8 anyway so 14/40 odd isn't really that bad.

I like to ask for the views of others basically because I want to do well, as I assume everyone does. I never send potentials to people I don't love and I would never send a song just for a cheap and easy hit either, but it's still nice to have an idea that it might go down well, at least with some people.

COLOUR ME OFFENDED.

I know somewhere between 10 and 15 entries or so prior to the contest generally, but even at the higher end of that I still only know less than a third of the songs so it's not too bad. As for the most part I still don't know the songs prior to finding out someone is sending them I don't think it ruins anything, it just kinda pulls forward the discovery of some of the songs if that makes sense.

And anyway, in the real Eurovision, you'll already know EVERY track before the semis start if you pay attention, so...

I started asking others for their opinions purely because I noticed this was something a number of others were doing and I was feeling a bit left out (a bit like being the boy who is always left until last when selecting the school football team) so was interested to see how it would work.

It gives me an insight into what other people like and I always give others my honest opinion about their choices. Co-incidentally when Johnkm PM'd me three of his contenders when I was hosting BJSC, I actually rated Quadron third out of the three songs. Come the final I gave the song 12 points so sometimes a song can grow after the initial listen. Maybe that's why people do it, if they already know some of the songs beforehand, they're more likely to enjoy them more when the semi final voting starts because they're already slightly familiar with them so they have an advantage. Idk?

I know about 0-3 entries before a contest. So far I only know what 2 people other than myself are potentially sending, which, excluding my own entry, is about 4% of the contest. And I do agree with Bre's comment about pulling forward the discovery. For example Hitstastic asked me for an opinion Zombies In Love before he sent it to the contest, and I like to think of that as a BJSC discovery. Obviously I loved it and thought it could do well. I didn't think it would finish as high as 4th though

I tend to hear like only about 4 people's entries TOPS beforehand. And they are all from the same people. I try not to do listening to potentials thing much anymore, only with ppl whose entries I usually love anyway. But yeah I tend to also have a few more that I know. From the more prominent entries I already knew Video Games and Sulk before the contest and without involvement of Grebo and Lewww for example. So it's a mix rly.
I actually haven't recognised anyone's entries since starting in this. I don't go out of my way on blogs or anything to "find" new music so this contest is a good way for me to find it.
I knew Ramrynia's and Danaelanda's song before the contest, but usually it's 0

Same here. I have no idea where people find stuff. I just browse iTunes, spotify, beatport and youtube channels and pick out the best song to enter. For example I discovered Feel the Love because its EP was in the top 200 dance albums on iTunes.

It was very few for me too this time around. In fact only one (NO CEREMONY///). But I wasn't really keeping an eye on blogs and shit so it's kind of my fault too.

I hardly ever know any entries beforehand, and I only enter records I love so I can see if anyone at all likes them too, not too worried whether they qualify or not, nevermind win! I tried an experiment with Bowie Jane (a 2013 track I liked a lot but didnt love to bits) to see if a pure pop song would be any more popular. It wasn't! I don't have time to go searching for obscure great contemporary songs (I don't have much leisure time and I rely on everyone else to do that for me!) which is why mine will generally not be from 2013 I'm afraid...

I prefer not knowing, anyway, my rule for Eurovision is: watch the semis once, and watch the youtubes of autoqualifiers once before the final - I can generally pick out a good record on 2 listens, it's rare that repeated listens to one I find ordinary will let it grow on me, though ones I quite like have the potential to turn to love after a while. I rarely actively dislike records, though lazy ones annoy me: the same short hook repeated for 4 minutes is tedious...

Usually ~10-15 but it really depends, at times I've only known about 4 and others I've known something ridiculous like 20!

Leww is the only one I ever talk with about it and he doesn't always know so

but in terms of like, just having heard entries, I usually know around 5 or so...

Of the 10 tracks I gave points to last contest, I already knew 6 of them and would've done even if the contest didn't exist. Two more I at least knew the artists but not the specific tracks, leaving just Cosmo's Midnight and Envy as completely new. :( BUT even if I make just one discovery then it's worth participating, so I don't mind!

I try to avoid Pitchfork and Scandipop to actually find entries but many of the blogs seem to be talking about the same stuff - if I make a discovery that seems fairly obscure, I'll google it and normally find out it's been covered on one of the 'big three' anyway. LIKE THIS ONE. D:

So yeah, I'm kinda trying to avoid blogs in general. Princes was an old (from 2008) favourite of mine. I was introduced to Paul & Fritz Kalkbrenner by a flatmate-to-be - it's also from 2008, so it's not gonna be doing the rounds even if it's not exactly unknown!

Chordashian is the only entry that doesn't appear on *any* of the blogs I frequent. So I have no idea how I found it actually, HA. (not that it was actually me that ended up sending it)

Oh my. My entry is a bit Stoffer & Maskinen / Braendt Barn-esque so I hope it doesn't end up on Scandipop. WHICH IS WHAT HAPPENED WITH RONYA. The bast*rds! I discovered it before those f***ers
