Thanks Mikey, zero chance of 100K on either chart then.

Lorde probably on for around 65-70K?

Sounds about right, I really don't know why some members were predicting 6 figures for Lorde, 80k as a stretch, but I can't see it.

Ah ok.

James Blunt doing much better than I expected then!! :o

Yeah, since the pre-order craze took off, these releases tend to only do around 1.8-2(max) X Tuesday midweeks in my experience. Used to be 2.4 X back in the good old physical era when Saturdays were the biggest sales day of the week and not a girl group.

I would like to think Lorde will sell a bit more than 33k in the other 5 days of the week... I don't think she's likely to do 100k this week by any means but 70k seems far too low to me, I would predict at least 80k. Hopefully we'll get sales for 'Royals' again tomorrow to give a better idea.

I think the quick dropoff from pre-order aided first midweek sales applies far more to acts which have a big fanbase (especially UK artists like James Arthur and Union J this week). Lorde as an artist is still relatively unknown in the UK, of course it's not her first single and the song has been gaining traction for a while but I don't think 'Royals' really lends itself to a massively frontloaded, pre-order driven first week. Especially as it's been a huge and long-lasting hit elsewhere.

(the above post is potentially clouded by loon vision but even that aside I'd be very surprised if she sells as little as 70k)

Also I still don't understand why people are acting like pre-orders are a new thing :drama:...

There is no indication of popularity on the iTunes albums chart so you can't say that with any certainty. For all we know Katy's main version might be outselling both of James' versions put together.

Yeah thats true was just looking at Blunty being 2 & 3!! Theres sales in now though, average to say the least

I suppose considering Lorde was in the top 100 on preorders for quite a while i personally thought she was selling a greater amount!

Pre-orders aren't new of course, but their visibility in the Top 100 singles chart on iTunes for weeks before the release is a relatively new thing isn't it?

Yes, but I don't see why this would make any noticeable impact. 'Visibility' on TV and radio etc. is what sells pre-orders, not being listed in a list of popular songs a few weeks earlier than before.

I doubt a significant number of people outside of niche places like here look through the iTunes top 100 for songs to buy on a particularly regular basis, if they want to buy a song they'll just search for it and pre-orders have never not shown up on searches.

Ah but pre-order singles (instead of EPs) with 1 track that appear immediately go straight into the Top 10 on the Sunday. It must be having some sort of an impact - in recent weeks there have been far more songs entering the iTunes chart inside the Top 10 on Sunday mornings = faster/more sales on the Sunday. Even for songs that aren't necessarily huge hits.

That's because more songs are being released as single pre-orders as opposed to EP pre-orders (probably because record labels have figured out that gets songs into the top 10 more quickly), not because single pre-orders are becoming more popular. That still only amounts to a few hours extra on the front page, mostly in the middle of the night / morning when people aren't awake to see it, so still a fairly negligible impact.

Wow, I was expecting a lot more from Lorde and James Arthur. James in particular considering the hype when the song first dropped - I actually expected it to outsell 'Wings' in the first week.
I'm not going to win this debate with you am I Bre? :P I concede.

I just haven't seen any compelling ~evidence~ that pre-orders are any more prominent than they were before, the only thing that's changed is a shift from EP pre-orders to single pre-orders :P

This is on topic! Kind of.

I think it's worth noting 'Royals' wasn't exactly doing a 'Blurred Lines'/'Wake Me Up' on pre-orders. Looking on Kworb it didn't make the top 100 on iTunes until 4 Oct and even then spent another week popping in and out before it reached a more solid position.

That was my first initial thought, which is why I didn't think its sales will crack into 6 figures. I grab my coat now. :(
