I'm not crazy on the idea but the thing is, sales are falling as they are and including streaming in the charts, which is more popular than ever before is definitely the next logical step to keep the charts relevant and increase sales, and most of the time, it DOES reflect what people are buying, paid streams aside, you'd have to listen to something a lot if you were buying it!

The charts will be slow, granted, I'm not looking forward to that but IIRC they were pretty slow when downloads first took off as well, I think it'll sort itself out, it may take a few years.

It's been over eight years since downloads were first implemented, the charts have to move forward.

steaming should be at least 50% of the chart tbh :D

it'd be mad if we went from starting 2014 like 2000 with massive instability at the top of the chart and ending it ala 1992 with multiple week no1's dominating

thankfully streaming is going to make it a lot harder for the likes of the vamps and 5sos to get top5/10 hits

Streaming will largely benefit One Direction etc!

It depends. In the US One Direction do well on Youtube streaming, but not so well on Spotify streaming. I reckon it'd be the same here.

I hope they are going to include Youtube and other sites like that, since it's the only thing that can provide excitement to the charts imo.

and as we've discussed before, repeat plays on sales don't count, which is all spotify is at the end of the day - the same people playing the same tracks week after week and distorting the charts.

At least with sales charts it's genuine NEW people buying the tracks week after week, so it's a more accurate chart of current taste.

Mmm it does seem odd when you put it like that. But if they do it like Billboard, you'd have to listen to a song a lot for it to register the equivalent of a sale anyway. I think it's right that people who only stream should have a say in the charts because why should you be penalised for not finding a need to download. But still, it is sad to see the end of an era and I don't really want to see the chart slow down.

Single sales are still healthy and thriving so this is even more pointless. Maybe if we were still in the sales doldrums of 2007, I'd understand.

So do they have to wait for the chart to become irrelevant before they do it?

That's awful. I hope we'll still get sale informations and not sort of point informations from Alan Jones.

Yes. The fact that sales still provide many million sellers in the last few years proves that streaming isn't that relevant yet in the UK.

@RecordOfTheDay We hear that streaming data will be added to the Official UK Singles Chart from 29 June, first combined Top 40 chart broadcast on R1 6 July

There is no news on MW regarding this yet.

Actually not that different from the real chart, except Rather Be and Money On My Mind are still really high and the new releases haven't really taken off yet.

How many streams will equal to 1 sale then?

Well surprisingly there isn't a single One Direction song in the Spotify top 100 singles at the moment! However, Nico & Vinz are currently at #71 so that could be an interesting release to follow considering the iTunes release isn't until the end of August.

Surely fan-bases will manipulate the system during release week.

I'd hope that streaming wouldn't be too influential, at least to start with. So maybe 1 million streams would equal 10,000 sales? Or maybe 20,000 but no more than that.
Surely fan-bases will manipulate the system during release week.

Yeah true, I thought you were referring to an impact on every weekly chart. :kink:

Ouch, there's gonna be a big shake up in the charts! And that's only 3 weeks before Cheryl releases her single :o

Her record label should rush-release it next week. I don't see anything blocking her from #1 at this point.

This is the main worry I have tbh! I'm not sure how it will be done, nor how they plan to add these to the sale totals of songs released before streaming's added.

I suppose the only advantage of including streaming will be that Coldplay will be Top 10 :P

Just what I was going to say  ASFOS is too good to miss the top 10. It would be nice if it somehow went top 10 for definite but I guess GN was the last straw for not of allowing that to happen :(

When you look at these figures, it's difficult to argue that streaming shouldn't be included. You can make sals top 40 with a fanbase of a few thousand, but you need to have genuine popularity to get the figures you need to make the streaming chart top 40. Of course this has always been the same, but whilst it's annoying that general public seem to like listening to tired old songs for months on end, if that's what they are doing it should probably be reflected.
