June 29, 201410 yr Is it definite that people who have the free Spotify service will have streams counted towards the chart? From : http://www.officialcharts.com/chart-news/s...d-to-know-3109/ What streams are now contributing to the Official Singles Chart? The streams which will count are on-demand premium (ie; paid for within a subscription) and ad-funded (ie free to the user, but with royalties paid through advertising) delivered by services such as Spotify, Deezer, Napster, O2 Tracks (Musicqubed), rara, Music Unlimited and Xbox Music. Thanks Vidcapper. :)
June 29, 201410 yr I'm a bit confused about the sales from when it changes as i thought that streaming sales were to be added to single sales totals. Are streaming sales going to be counted as total sales for songs now along with the downloads or will they have their own sales separately? I.e. Calvin Harris's summer sells for example 350,000 downloads and 50,000 streams would that make his official sales total 400,000 or just 350,000?
June 29, 201410 yr I think his sales would be 355,000 since 100 streams = 1 sale 50,000 streams = 5,000 sales 5,000 + 350,000 = 355,000 Yeah, streaming sales will account for total sales but there will be a separate streaming and sales chart too Edited June 29, 201410 yr by Let Go For 2nite

So we could see a lot of the poor selling hits from tis year getting a sort of new lease of life in terms of sales then which is good.

June 29, 201410 yr The OCC have stated that streams will be used in awarding certifications (gold discs etc.). However, it is not clear whether a song that has sold 800,000 copies and had 20 million streams will be considered a million seller.
June 29, 201410 yr Or in other words the charts will be fixed by advertisers pushing certain records (b). Ridiculous. That's the equivalent of a record company giving away free downloads and having them count towards the chart in order to look as if it's a success.... You have very significantly misunderstood (to the point where I'm struggling to see how you interpreted it that way). 'Ad-funded' just means it's a free service that has ads on it so the artists are paid from the ad revenue instead of a subscription fee. It's otherwise exactly the same as paid subscription streaming.

However, it is not clear whether a song that has sold 800,000 copies and had 20 million streams will be considered a million seller. That's one thing I'd be miffed about. For me a track's total sales should be just that. The streams should only count towards the tracks weekly chart position. While I'm on a wee rant I also think a song should be listened to all the way through before it counts as a chart stream, not this 30 second nonsense!! :nono:
June 30, 201410 yr I presume the midweeks won't have any streaming data and it will be added to the actual chart at the end of the week?

That's the equivalent of a record company giving away free downloads and having them count towards the chart in order to look as if it's a success.... It won't work that way - advertisers can't tell you what music you like! :) I'm a bit confused about the sales from when it changes as i thought that streaming sales were to be added to single sales totals. Are streaming sales going to be counted as total sales for songs now along with the downloads or will they have their own sales separately? This is one of the unanswered questions, and relevant to my YTD sales lists. If sales/streams are combined into one total, I simply won't be able to provide a sales-only figure any more. I presume the midweeks won't have any streaming data and it will be added to the actual chart at the end of the week? I don't see why they wouldn't, assuming streaming data is sent to the OCC on a daily basis, just as sales are.
June 30, 201410 yr I don't think streaming will count towards the albums chart anytime soon, if ever. Think of it this way, if one song from an album gets tons of streams and the other tracks don't get much, the album will still chart highly on the chart because of that one song. I think this is how the Spotify album chart works anyway, as I imagine it'll be difficult to count the number of times an album is listened to in full. In Nordic countries (here as well) streaming is already part of album chart. We have a bit complex way of measuring it. At least six songs from one album must be streamed and only 70% of the streams of the most listened song are included. All streams of the album are divided by the number of songs on the album. That figure is then divided by a mysterious "streaming ratio" and the resulting number is added to the sales figures. This is how it happens in Finland, Sweden and Norway at the moment.
June 30, 201410 yr I like that. But I think maybe the number of tracks listened to should be dependant on the number of tracks the album has. So greater than 50% of tracks must be listened to, capped at 10 listens. Listens added together and divided by the number of tracks. Then that number is used in the same ratio as the singles.
June 30, 201410 yr I presume the midweeks won't have any streaming data and it will be added to the actual chart at the end of the week? That is unknown at the moment. There is no published midweek streaming chart that I know of so they may only have been sending weekly date up until now. We should know by tomorrow whether they are now sending if daily. If not then there could be a few surprises on Sunday which may send some of us into a panic!
July 2, 201410 yr I had a quick skip back and didn't see the answer but does anybody know the answer to this: One user's listens per song is capped at 10 plays a day per track. But what about if they listen to the single version 10 times, then a remix, then the album version, etc? Would that count towards more parts of a sale?

But what about if they listen to the single version 10 times, then a remix, then the album version, etc? Would that count towards more parts of a sale? That's a good question. Here's another interesting puzzle for the OCC to ponder. In the world of streaming it would be possible to specify the most popular versions of a song and split them. So instead of grouping the songs together they could split them apart. So if there was a 3 minute version of the song and a 6 minute one they would become separate chart entries. This might be a bit early for them to do this, but when the download market in the size of the CD single, which if iTunes pulls out won't be that long away, then there's no reason to group tracks together. After all it is supposed to be a "popularity chart" now, not a sales chart. After all if say members of the public like the 6 minute version better that the "radio edit," it would help Radio One on it's chart to play that and not the radio edit they will play now.
July 2, 201410 yr I don't see any reason why they'd do that. It's 'possible to specify the most popular versions of a song and split them' with downloads as well, but they don't because... that would be quite stupid. The chart is a list of the most popular *songs*, not the most popular specific mixes / versions of songs.
July 2, 201410 yr iTunes are not going to pull out - that's a ridiculous idea. It's a huge money spinner for Apple. And there's no reason to split different versions of the same song up either. Edited July 2, 201410 yr by AcerBen
