-"Happy" joins an elite club with 20 weeks in the top 10, but will still need 4 more to match Guns N' Roses' "November Rain" & The Prodigy's "Breathe" for the record

Why was I not aware of this record!!!

It's a major anomaly that really surprised me when I first found out about it. They never even got another top 20 hit here, but Breathe went 4-5-7-7-7-7-5-6-7-5-6-5-5-5-2-5-6-6-5-6-6-7-8-7-12-13-13-12-13-19-17-18-27-27-30-37-61-63-67-72-65-x-81-x. I think it was helped by low sales at the start of the year, since it only ended up as the 9th biggest seller of 1997.

 

As for this week's chart, it seems it's a week of exceeding past performances. Ed Sheeran gets his first #1 thanks to a combination of pre-order sales, already high airplay & relentless promo (and a song people like :P). His previous best was "The A Team" which was stuck at #2 for two weeks in very unfortunately timing (I think if the tracking week was anything other than Friday->Thursday, it could have made #1). But Ed's improvement has nothing on Ariana's, as she had previously peaked as high as #37 with "The Way", but now goes right in at #4 with only 4 days of sales! And then there's Sam Smith who had gone top 5 with Naughty Boy, barely top 50 with Disclosure (though certified platinum), and top 60 on his own with "Money On My Mind" (though that may finally make the top 50 this week). "Stay With Me" also looks to rocket into the top 10 next week. An achievement not to be proud of though, The Chainsmokers & Gabrielle Aplin were both top 5 a month ago, but in the last 4 weeks, they've both dropped exactly 33 places. David Guetta has dropped a relatively tame 25 places with "Shot Me Down" by comparison.

 

And on albums, "Frozen" finally gets to #1 possibly because of reduced competition and because Demi's version of "Let It Go" has been playing on promos for The Voice (attacking the charts starting next week). It blocks Iggy Azalea and in turn ends a lengthy streak of Australian #1s. Both charts could be back with an Australian #1 next week with Justice Crew & Thundamentals looking strong for #1 debuts. And I'm eager for when the full chart is out to see just how far Nickelback have dropped. I can't think of any album dropping from the top 10 to completely out of the top 100 in a week, so this could be a record :lol:

It's interesting to note that Coldplay have now charted 3 instant grats from this album, which only Lady Gaga had done previously if I'm not mistaken. After 10 weeks on the chart, Pitbull has only been on even numbers, and after 4 weeks, Samantha Jade has only been on positions divisible by 6 :D I imagine it's been ages since the last time the top 10 were all under 10 weeks in.

Only just found out Lily's last album was a #1 in Australia - sucks to see her drop off like this. But she's lucky to be as high as #4 considering she's done virtually nothing internationally with the singles. Such a drop off :drama:

Oh wow, totally missed Zendaya peaking at #8 a few weeks back! At least 'Replay' made the top 10 somewhere...it'd still be nice for her supposed September UK release to make a surprise impact.

Kinda interesting week, most notable for me on the singles chart is 'Stolen Dance'. That's been big in a variety of European countries and is now going top 10 here just as it starts to make waves in Canada. I expect that'll reach the UK in a few months.

 

Also amused by Katy and Pharrell - so surprised at 'Birthday' and to a lesser extent 'Marilyn Monroe'. Really no idea what the problem with 'Birthday' is, I honestly don't think it's that nothingy.

 

Album chart is less fun but it's nice to see Jessica Mauboy get some more longevity - it feels like this has been a pretty successful campaign for her all things considered...? And it's cool to see Foxes chart too.

There's more Eurovision stuff lower down too, Calm After The Storm is #66, and Undo is #81, which is the first time two non-winning songs have charted in the same year. Awkwardly, Rise Like A Phoenix would have perhaps been top 60, but has been denied for no reason <_<

Good to see that 'Sea Of Flags' has just managed to go Top 40 - Shame it had zero impact in Europe :(

I can't really get into this Justice Crew track, much prefer Boom Boom.

 

Loving that Beautiful is still in the charts, it's just a superb album.

Would've been nice to see Sea Of Flag get a bit higher, but it made top 40 which is great. Agreed about Beautiful too, Never Be The Same as a ballad single has obviously done a huge deal for the album selling, plus the discount as well!

It was performed on The Voice (by contestants not Emeli herself). Funnily though it was put on iTunes' New Singles To Watch this week :lol:

 

Also Cher Lloyd's album isn't out until late July in the UK according to the iTunes pre-order, so that's probably why :P and yeah Fancy's airplay has been really lagging, it only hit the airplay top 40 after reaching the top 10. Royals last year was similar in the sense of Australian radio taking ages to pick up a (sort of) local hit, whereas it quickly blew up over in the US!
