This is taking forever

:hi:

But yes, given i expected to get it done in 2 weeks it really has. Been busy, but discussion has been thriving in here so I'm happy for that (why not get involved in some of that discussion instead while you're here? :))

I've been happy with the way the results have been revealed. 2 or 3 a day is fine, if there was too many then I'd probably be less inclined to post comments, whereas as things are there is enough time for everyone to discuss. Don't forget there has been 60+ songs to get through, as well as the 12 albums.

| 06 // Sorry // Confessions on a Dancefloor // 8.96 (7: cassandra, ultraviolence // 11: o'mie, jsilv, liamk, 10: liam, mr_aly, gooddelta, johnkm, niallminogue, randomfurlong, gavindeejay, robswift, haus, mikemyers, sweetcandy, adamaloud, )

And so the penultimate tick of the 'Confessions...' clock chimes as 'Sorry' narrowly misses out on the top 5. Written and produced in partnership with Stuart Price it was one of the first songs developed for the album, and so helped pave the way and channel the direction of the sound. Released as the second single, following the mahoosive first, it had a lot to live up to, but thankfully it managed to live up to the hype as it was universally praised by critics, many citing it as the album's highlight. Commercially it was a success too, becoming her 12th #1 in the UK, but airplay hindered its performance in the US. The music video continued on from the 'Hung Up' video and featured many of the same performers and ideas from that. It's a riot as Madonna uses her wild dance moves and iconic fashion to prove her prowess. It is another song about self-empowerment and incorporates a multitude of languages to drill this message in. The middle-8 of the song in particular uses this to almighty effect, as it gradually builds before exploding in the song's final minute. It has gone on to become a huge fan favourite, and is one of many songs to really get the party started in style. Hugely brash and in your face, with this out of the running, we're left with 5 more hits to countdown. But before that we turn to our first medal winner. Your 3rd place album...

Sorry is a good song but it's not classic M and it shouldn't be this high up.

I often feel that 'Sorry' gets overlooked and it's so so good, I'm glad to see it get the recognition it deserves here.

I probably wouldn't call it her 6th best, but I do like it a lot more than 'Hung Up'.

Sorry is good, but not classic Madonna as mentioned and is far too high.

To confess my sins, to do penance, to amend my life, and to avoid the temptations of evil

And so we make it to the first medal winner of the countdown. Your third place album is Madonna's fourth, and it carries on from the album we left previously. 'Like A Prayer' was released at the turn of the eighties, and came off the back of a hugely successful album about the self, and allowing people to accept the self. Here Madonna took to much wider, global and BIG issues. The title alone is enough to inform us of this, and while it isn't a religious album per se, it shares many issues with religion, particularly, family, fathers, prayer, sexuality, rituals and more. The idea of family is the most central. Madonna dedicated it to her mother who passed away when she was young, and claims that in a nutshell it is about "my mother, my father, and bonds with my family" making it her most personal album to date and to put it most plainly, it is her first big confession. It was a hugely important album at the time, and still stands as one of the most influential, ground-breaking, essential and well-known. And of course (as is becoming a theme here) it was a gigantic success around the world, spawning 6 big singles and was taken on the road in the 'Blond Ambition' world tour. Madonna continued her work with producers from her previous album, but also enlisted the help of Prince to help tackle the huge issues she was dealing with.

Throughout the album, the songs merge the tragedy of losing and searching for Madonna's mother, with her similar struggle to find religion and answers to the big questions most explicitly in the title track and in

. Elsewhere she deals with global issues of sexuality and female empowerment in
, the then taboo issue of AIDS in
and love in the tender moments of
and
. Most frequently however, Madonna returns to herself and assesses her own place in the world in relation to these issues but also her own personal development. The theme of childhood runs throughout the album, more generally in
and then most personally in the haunting sounds of
where Madonna relives the death of her mother through one of the album's stunning highlights. Family continues to show its presence in
, but she fails to do that as she breaks during
. The album therefore merges these global issues, but they are presented as isolated, vulnerable and personal messages from the artist. It's incredibly triumphant that such raw and personal incidents can transcend to listeners around the world, but 'Like A Prayer' did just that and it's still as relevant today as it was at the turn of the 80s. It is an album that attempts to deal with so much, not only in Madonna's turbulent life, but also for any and every listener. The exuberance of 'Express Yourself' right down to the delicate 'Promise To Try', it's a lot to take in, but never once seems overwhelming as you're taken along as a calm pace. One more confession down, two more to go.

Sorry is a good song but it's not classic M and it shouldn't be this high up.

I agree, the top 10 has been the most disappointing part of this countdown for me so far. the bulk of my 10 & 11s dropped out some time ago....

11 Causing A Commotion 56

11 Crazy For You 30

11 Open Your Heart 16

10 Cherish 26

10 American Life 45

10 Who's That Girl 39

10 Justify My Love 25

10 I'll Remember 49

10 You'll See 29

10 True Blue 34

To come....

10 Like A Prayer

10 Hung Up

10 Vogue

But I think this is more to do with the fact I'm 35 years old so my favourite Madonna era was 1987-1990. I even gave Dear Jessie a 9 and that came 65th!!!

A lot of people who have voted in this are somewhat younger so hence why this is so far up. It seems fans from the Ray Of Light onwards era make up the bulk of the vote

Get Together so high up is the biggest joke as it's rotten.

Great presentation though, I've become somewhat hooked and check up regularly on this countdown I'll miss it when it's gone.

Like A Prayer is also clearly the best album with many different styles.

I agree "Sorry" is way too high! It should be right outside the top 20, in a perfect world.
Sorry is the best Confessions single, so much better than Hung Up which sadly overshadows it.

'Jump' > 'Sorry' >>>>>>>>> 'Hung Up' >>>> 'Get Together'.

Not even sorry (rofl) about it. I don't know why it is that I dislike the last two as much as I do, either. They just don't hit me in the same way as they seem to do for others.

Sorry would be low top 10 in my fave Madonna songs, so I can't really grumble at that!

I agree about the order, but I really like all 4!

I actually don't really enjoy Like a Prayer as an album at all. Lots of filler, some of it surprisingly bland (Love Song, hardly the sum of its collaborators' star power). Also lacking any musical coherence. V overrated.
Like A Prayer hasn't aged that well really, only Love Song used to be a dud for me but things I loved at the time like Till Death Do Us Part just suffer from being a late 80s production.
Love Song is TERRIBLE. Definitely among Madge's very worst tracks. I agree that it's a lot more patchy than many people would suggest too, the highs are just as high, but the lows really are quite bad.

Like A Virgin' >>> 'Like A Prayer'

Bye

EDIT: Hello. Besides 4 songs or so... MDNA really is a shitty album isn't it? Definitely her worst ever.
