"Like I Can" ought to be the final single but if it's going to be a surprise I have no idea

Disappointing that Duke Dumont is likely to miss #1, it's by far the better track out of the three imo. I feel like it should have been released at least a month ago though - I don't think it really needed 10 weeks of exposure between premiere & eventual release.
Gutted that Sam Smith isn't looking to advance any further than #9 with "I'm Not the Only One", though it's done far better than I thought it would be and is helping the album sell.

Just read his recent interview with Digital Spy, and he said there are plans for only one more single from the album, and that's it's one that will surprise fans (i.e. doesn't sound like a single, unlike "Money on My Mind" and "Stay with Me") - anyone want to hazard a guess? They all sound like possibly single choices to me, I'm all for "Life Support" though.

The way he spoke in that interview, it was as if he considers I'm Not The Only One to not sound like a single either. But I think hes completely wrong there. I'm Not The Only One is the standout track from the album imo. So what he considers a surprise may not be the same as what everyone else considers a surprise!

He should release Like I Can. But I think it'll be Restart.

'Leave My Lover' should've always been released instead of 'I'm Not The Only One', I always thought that was a bizarre decision.

Even with 'I'm Not The Only One' becoming a top 10 hit?!

He could probably get a top 10 hit with anything as the third single from that album, let's be honest here.

In that case (which I don't agree with but whatever...) no single decision would be 'bizarre'. Post-album top 10 singles are pretty rare these days.

I know what you mean, but it kind of felt like they just released a random album track when they had this obvious highlight which everyone was raving about when the album was released. Unless they're just saving it for the X-Factor season.

If everyone was supposedly raving about 'Leave Your Lover' when the album came out then how come 'I'm Not The Only One' was the highest charting cherrypick?

It is a shame but the release was not handled that well, the pre order and radio debut came way too soon but they still left the release until the 24th but delayed another week to try and get the number one which is looking like a major fail

Maybe he should have done his usual once-a-year release!

I'm really not a fan of the Duke Dumont track. I am also getting bored of one week number 1's - I think it's bad for music - as years down the line will there be as many stand out tracks to talk about...

What do you mean? I don't think how many #1s there are will have any effect on what songs people talk about in the future. Whether there's 10 #1s or 35 #1s this year won't change what songs from now people will still like in the future.

Also, this might be the last year with so many #1s, so we might as well enjoy it. In a streaming dominated future there's no way the #1s will keep changing every week.

24 Katy Perry This Is How We Do - New iTunes peak for this. Where did Birthday peak on iTunes, was it #22?

I don't feel like that's the case at all. I'm Not The Only One has been widely recognised as one of the strongest on the album (it was apparently picked by the fans, it got cherry picked the most when the album came out, critics have highlighted it as one of the strongest etc) so it really feels like the natural choice for a single. And the fact it's gone Top 10 despite the album already going platinum, and it's not had THAT much airplay or promotion is a huge achievement.

There was definitely more attention on 'Leave Your Lover' over any other album track at the time from what I saw. I didn't listen to the full album on release (still haven't) but various forums/blogs etc. consistently mentioned that track as the standout to the point where it was the only one I felt compelled to listen to for myself (and didn't exactly see the fuss ). The fact that 'Leave Your Lover' was given a video a week beforehand probably had a lot to do with the hype but the song also seemed to connect with people thematically more than the rest. I guess this didn't quite translate into cherrypicks so fair point about that (although it was the second-highest track on release, ahead of 'Lay Me Down' and only 200 sales/16 positions behind 'I'm Not The Only One' - thank you Sales Vault :magic:).

Anyway, I've done a complete u-turn on 'I'm Not The Only One' :o. I agree with mr_aly that, release week cherrypicks aside, it did seem like a bizarre single choice when announced. It was plodding and dull to me at first but it's grown with every listen, in part due to the video doing an excellent job of highlighting the lyrics and theme, which hadn't stood out to me before. It's by far my favourite of the singles from his album now and it's always great to see an artist manage a post-album top 10 hit, especially without the need of a feature, elaborate gimmicks or heavy promotion.

Is California on the top 1500 on pre orders at the moment?

Thanks in advance

It's not. It is #1250 on Pop, where #555 = #1494 currently.
