This topic may have been made before idk but with Walking With Elephants rightfully smashing plus Bullit probably going to be a future hit, it is quite rare for a chart hit to be fully instrumental.

can you name some?

Martin Garrix's chart hits do not count by the way as they all have at least 1 spoken word in them.

The obvious two are Stranger on the Shore and Eye Level which both sold a million copies but surely there are more recent examples?

We had two French instrumentals in the top 10 at the same time in 1977

"Magic Fly" by Space and "Oxygene" by Jean-Michel Jarre.

Pigbag had four instrumental hits, including the superb "Papa's Got A Brand New Pigbag"

I'll leave others for somebody else to get.

Daft Punk's first top 10 hit "Da Funk" has some muffled speaking at the start but no clear words I think. That went to #7 in 1997, and 8 months earlier, the two guys from U2 that aren't Bono & The Edge also went to #7 with the theme to Mission Impossible.

Mark Snow - X-Files Theme

Harold Faltermeyer - Axel F how can anyone forget that

Greyhound by Swedish House Mafia?

Eric Prydz - Pjanoo and Chicane - Poppiholla spring to mind, both Top 10 hits within the last 6 or 7 years!

Also, I believe Escala - Palladio charted, if I remember rightly? Loved that song when it was performed on BGT.

Minimalistix - Close Cover

Lots of other trance ones from 1998/9 in particular too.

William Orbit - Barbers Adagio For Strings (Ferry Corston Remix) (#3)

Tiesto - Adagio For String (#37)

Jurgan Vris - The Theme (#13)

Chicane Poppiholler (#7)

Yomanda. - Synth & Strings (#8)

Nearly all The Shadows' hits were instrumentals.

We shouldn't forget the wonderful Nut Rocker by B Bumble and the Stingers and two versions of part of Mozart's 40th symphony by Waldo de los Rios and Sovereign Collection.

Other film and television themes to have been hits are

Chi Mai (The Life & Times of David Lloyd George) - Ennio Morricone

Who Pays The Ferryman - Yannis Markopoulos

Star Wars - Meco

Blue Peter - Mike Oldfield (who had several other instrumental hits)

James Galway had a hit with an instrumental (flute) version of Annie's Song.

Orbital - Chime (17)

Orbital - The Box (11)

Orbital - The Saint (3)

Aphex Twin - On (32)

There are a lot of tracks that you think are fully instrumental, but have one word in them

Mr. Oizo - Flat Beat

lol. I remember the levi jeans adverts that used this song and the yellow puppet Flat Eric from when I was in Primary School.
