simple question, why do you all listen to the chart?

 

for me it's more of a tradition/habit these days as the charts are so stale these days (even without streaming factored in) and there's a lot of songs in there I don't listen to much if at all, out of choice. I do like Jameela's hosting and the aspect of finding out how songs are doing in a long rundown way rather than just finding the top 40 out by clicking a website link though, and every so often there's an entry that the position it gets to is very undetermined until the end (Bullit being a recent example, so happy that made the top 15 in the end but top 10 would've been better)

I don't listen every week by any means but I enjoy listening when I can especially around Xmas to hear older classics. I don't mind hearing stale charts because at the end of the day in a few months you'll never hear Happy for instance ever again so as with most chart hits it's of its time!

I would have said out of tradition/habit but since the charts have slowed down with downloads and streaming and the number of new entries per week has radically dropped and the presenters of the chart have got worse ever since JK and Joel took over (less said about Fearne and Reggie the better) I now just follow the top 40 on Buzzjack.

It's a mix of some of those reasons I'd say! Jameela is one of course *.* but also I wouldn't hear a lot of chart songs otherwise, I don't listen to the radio on any other occasion and don't seek everything out myself, only if it's an artist I like, so I'd end up missing out on lots of new music (and did for a while). I do enjoy a lot of the songs in the chart also which helps when listening :kink:

I don't anymore. I used to love following my favourite songs and that held my interest from 1997 to about 2012. Combination of lack of interest in the songs, overly long chart runs and awful chart shows has chased me away.

I stopped listening to it a few months back when I realized I was only doing so for the chart info, which can more easily be found on-line.

Out of habit really. There's not really anything much on TV to watch, so if I'm in the house having a lazy Sunday I'll stick it on and join in the Buzzjack chart show thread. I do enjoy reading and taking part in the banter that goes on in there.

I'm 10 years clean now.

I only listen to the Christmas chart now and the year's best-sellers, if they do those.

never miss it, as tedious as it is these days, as it's still the main way I get to hear new Radio 1 songs (I don't have time to listen much to R1 these days). Been listening to the chart show for an incredible-sounding 46 years. Yet I'm only 35... :lol:

 

Streaming has been a huge mistake, I said from the start people would stop tuning in if it got slower and even more tedious than the sales charts. The weekly sales chart Top 100 is more interesting.

 

Jameela has improved a lot since the early days, I like her wry sense of humour to make comments now, rather than her earlier bluntness and seemingly imagining she was talking to a class of 12-year-olds. Happy, better get used to hearing it occasionally for the rest of your lives, it's never going to go away cos it's THE song of this generation and will be looked back on that way by historians - the world forgot it's huge decade-long recessionary problems by spending 4-minutes feeling good... :yahoo:

I listen every week as I host the Chart Show thread on Haven Forum, I still like the humour of Jameela. She was the reason why I converted from being one of those Awful people who used to listen to Capital's Big Top 40 & Hit 40 UK before that.

 

One funny thing was, when I filled in once on the Haven Chart Show Thread (One of my first ones) I had 2 chart shows playing at once, I was still listening every week to the BT40 as my main, but I had to have Reggie going on in the other ear so I could host the thread, did turn your head a bit, a bit of ambidextrous listening, BTW I am ambidextrous, I can write equally good with either hand.

I guess its tradition and out of habit, since back to the early 80s, but lately they have become a borefest with streaming added, listening to the same tracks week on week and hardly new entries, but I guess that boils down to artists not releasing new material, there used to be some great chart battles, but we hardly see them now, apart from the odd weeks and Xmas week when a track challenges the X Factor winners track.

 

I think the chart show needs to be condensed, just play the top 20 in full and all the new entries between 21-40 and extend the album chart to a top 10, it worked nicely when The Teen Awards was transmitted a while back.

 

I remember the time when the chart had at least 10 to 16 new entries per week, those days are gone

That worked really well actually, we didn't have to listen to all the deadwood.

 

I just wish R1 could play the top 75 instead of just the top 40, it's not as if they don't have access to it surely as otherwise how would they play the #41 before the show each week? (unless OCC just gives them the top 41 which would make no sense)

 

The format would be 10 songs from #41-75, 10 songs from #21-40, with choices based on how fresh the songs are or big climbers/re-entries, then the whole top 20

 

We could have heard these songs last week then for example:

I only listen to it when I'm driving at time of broadcast (when we drive afar, we tend to travel back on a Sunday afternoon/evening). I don't really get a chance earlier, I'm not sure the specific reason why I opt to listen to the chart show though...

I hardly ever do anymore, only if I'm in the house and not working or whatever. And even then I'd prefer to put on my own music and listen to something more fresh.

 

I think I'd definitely still listen if we didn't have midweek info though. The changes from Friday's final mids to the official chart on Sunday are always minimal.

That would be better than the restrictive Top 40 format proposed above. Only playing the new entries between 21 and 40 should mean that, for example, Take Me To Church would only have been played once.

 

I generally don't listen to Radio 1 apart from the chart show so I only get to hear songs such as Happy once a week.

I've been listening for almost eight years now so it's quite hard to let go, although at the same time, I can't deny it's getting less and less interesting hearing the same records week in week out in a different order due to the painful lack of movement at times, I know streaming is for the best in terms of sales, but it's a shame that it's put an end to the more interesting/very good one week wonders.

 

I would agree with condensing the 21-40 section a little bit and only played the more fresh songs and/or songs that haven't been overplayed (but hopefully ensuring a variety of songs played, and not to extent they abuse it by snubbing anything not on their playlist and hammering artists their supporting), and perhaps play some of the new entries on the sales only chart/top 75 on the streaming chart as some of them are at least worth a mention (not necessarily a play, see UKIP/Cliff Richard)
