Last I heard was Taylor wanted it removed from Spotify for some odd reason...

She is encouraging people to buy the album, which is smart. Artists make naff all from streaming in the grand scheme of things.

I wish all record companies did the same not only for profit but to save the 'album' as spotify will eventually destroy it.

Before anyone asks where Ella is today -_- we do not have any chart info for today, after saying that I bet something drops.

It is not smart at all, people will just illegally download it instead.

you bet something 'drops'? hopefully won't be Ella! where is she right now?

So you think people who would illegally download it would bother to pay for Spotify or sit through adverts on Spotify if it was on there instead?

on the other hand do you think people who have Spotify subscription or sit through adverts will pay more to buy Taylor's songs or just illegally download it?

I think this is the way backwards not forwards.

I think it is more about as she releases new singles etc to convince people to buy the album rather than just cherry pick listening to them on Spotify or at least cherry pick the downloads on itunes and then hopefully 'complete the album' at some point when on sale etc.

She is obviously doing something right given her sales, her and her record company wouldn't make a decision that would lose them money.

She was selling well when her music was on Spotify, too.

No. I didn't say that did I?

Clearly Ed Sheeran should take all of his music off of Spotify, he'd sell so much more and have the best selling album of 2014.

What about her sales though? :P

I never thought that by taking music off spotify people would buy it instead, although that poses a slight risk. It'll depend on whether Spot-scribers decide to buy it instead (worth x100 'sales points' than streaming) or that 1:100 is better than not having it streamable... If Tay and (others?) are doing this then maybe it will be a good tactic for getting it higher/stay high in the charts, but really isn't it better to let people have as much easy access to their music as possible rather than trying to boost sales/chart success?

I assume if Mart!n doesn't have chart data, he probably doesn't have sales either, and if he did no doubt he would post it ^_^

Talk about shooting yourself in the foot!

It would be a painfully yet stupid experience!

I think it'll increase both illegal downloads and genuine sales of the album. There are songs I wanted to play on Spotify, couldn't find, so went and bought the album.

It's really sad seeing the album format struggling so much. It's also annoying when streaming means that every big album release leads to 10 songs from the album entering the charts...

This kind of actions can work for some artists, but in general in the near future this won't work out. Of course her sales are good nowadays (!), still not extraordinary but such sales 5-10 years ago could've been much-much higher.

In my opinion (and of course you have the right to disagree), streamings sites will be more and more popular, people can preview, listen to new songs too, but there will be still customers who like to "own" music amongst streaming users, so if they think there are some good tracks on Spotify/Deezer etc, they will also buy it, to listen to it where they can't use or want use Spotify. At least streaming sites are legal and don't force people to illegally download songs.

The world is changing and leads more and more to the digital materials. Of course I preferred also the 90s, where singles and albums were seperate charts and easy to understand and to follow. Not it's much more compiiacted the singles chart are full of album tracks too, in fact there aren't real singles anymore in the format it was 10-20 years ago but to go backwards and just to release something that only can be bought is not the way forward anymore. Album sales decreasing for years and not just because of streaming (it has a big part now but the decline started earlier).

I was thinking the same actually, as soon as Shake It Off was taken down, she dropped suddenly faster on iTunes. I can't prove that though there are some connection between the two things.

If we're talking about if streaming affects sales, I think we can use the Sam Smith album for example. it wasn't on streaming for the first two months of release and sold very well but has continued to so since it went on streaming sites in July, in fat Sam Smith is above Taylor Swift in the midweeks

The same applies to Ed Sheeran in fact his album was immediately available on Spotify.

I have Spotify and just don't listen to Taylor. I would never buy it because it wasn't there. I think it's a pompous move really.

How is that when iTunes doesn't include streaming? (as far as I'm aware)
